The pacing of The Wrong Trousers is pitch perfect. You forget that it's stop motion and become completely engrossed with the characters and the story. The train chase at the end....absolutely mind blowing.
I used to be petrified of the scene in Loaf and death where Gromit is holding on to the fan falls off and the villains eyes open to the point I would have nightmares that night
It’s strange how media affects us in that way, doesn’t it? Thank you for sharing! I like your profile, by the way, the Netflix series was actually a pretty good adaptation.
We have the same rankings! Even though The wrong trousers has Gromit feeling cast out, and Wallace left to a betrayal of sort, I think A close shave does it much better. Gromit imprisonment was so emotional and Wallace love interest actually captivating. On top of this, Feather's character is very good but is compared to Preston a rather one-dimensional bad guy while Preston is actually quite sad. The ending scene where he is "nice" again actually got to me as a kid. Adding to this, the mystery and thrill of the robbery and genius of the train chase in all it's glory, A close shave finale is BRILLIANT. The truck heist with all the sheep, the near death experiences over and over again, Gromit's plane is one of the most iconic pieces in a Wallace and Gromit flick, the porridge canon, Preston's reveal, the final treadmill run. A Close Shave is masterclass.
I recommended the movie to a group of friends and strangers, we were all teenagers at the time. They never saw any Wallace and Gromit before, and were skeptical they would like it. Needless to say, they became instant fans, and one guy even thanked me for recommending it. That’s the only time that’s ever happened to me.
I remember being disappointed that it never got a full series like Shaun the Sheep did. But what we got was amazing. Growing up as an American with 80% British television and a grandmother with a British accent really messed with me as a kid in school tho lol. Most of my childhood is Ardman animations works and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s just one of those things I wish I could experience for the first time all over again.
Here’s my ranking from worst to best: 6. A Matter of Loaf and Death 5. A Close Shave 4. A Grand Day Out 3. Cracking Contraptions 2. The Wrong Trousers 1. The Curse of the Were Rabbit
One of my very earliest memories is watching A Grand Day Out with my dad. It really kickstarted my love of animation, and I still love it and the other Wallace and Gromit films so much.
Every once in a while I get the urge to rewatch all of Wallace and Gromit so here I am at the tail end of one such urge. I’m pleasantly surprised by how close our rankings are! I would put Cracking Contraptions last (it’s cute but I like a cohesive story better than vignettes), and The Wrong Trousers above A Close Shave purely for nostalgic reasons (being the first one I ever saw)- but I will say, when I first rewatched A Close Shave as an adult, it instantly became my favorite for a while! I think I was too frightened of it as a kid to properly appreciate how great it is, especially since there was a lot I didn’t remember about it, including that awesome car chase/plane ride scene at the end. I fully agree with what you said about A Matter of Loaf and Death- it should have been a feature film. When I first saw it I thought it was too dark in tone as well, but now the pacing is my only real problem with it. Everything happens so quickly!
Awesome video. This is how I'll rank them. 6. A Matter of Loaf and Death 5. Cracking Contraptions 4. A Grand Day Out 3. The Curse of the Were-Rabbit 2. Close Shave 1. The Wrong Trousers
I strongly agree with you about "a matter of loaf and death." it's really good and wraps up nicely, like all the wallace and gromit items, but it just felt like there was so much more they _wanted_ to add, and couldn't because they didn't have the backing of dreamworks. it's still great; just, all the other wallace and gromit productions are _even better._ the opening scene alone where they go through wallace's "rube goldberg" machine to dress them for work, pour them coffee, and even crank up their motorcycle for them was so much fun to watch and another fine example of wallace's slothfulness XD
i audibly gasped when you put the wrong trousers at number 2, i thought i was the only one who liked 'a close shave' the most!! gosh, when i was a child i loved all of the wallace and gromit animations (excluding matter of loaf and death bc it wasn't out yet haha) but i would always ask my parents my parents to play a close shave the most. i called it 'the one with the sheep and the weird slime.' that said, i dont think animation has ever made me laugh in complete humor, joy, and shock than when gromit picked up those spare tracks in the wrong trousers. it was genius!
Even the music of the wererabbit movie you put on this video gave me nostalgia shiver ! A ton of good memories with my dad, i was born in 2005 but i'm so glad my dad have shown me this in my childhood
I would agree with the ranking other than switching the top 2. The model train chase in Wrong Trousers is just perfection, as I get older I’m just amazed at how difficult that must’ve been to create. I do respect recognising that it’s probably better while still preferring A Close Shave, they are really close. The plane smashing through the walls is also brilliant for example
I can remember hours of me watching all of these on my DVD player when I was only about 5 years old and I still think it’s one of the best cartoons and stop motion series ever made
Although i dont and cannot deny that all the other shorts were great in their own ways (Close Shave introducing a fun new character in Shaun, and Wrong Trousers giving us the best villain), Matter of Loaf and Death is my personal favorite. Yes, it was short and felt a bit off at some points (Like how Gromit and Fluffles escaped with the Balloon even though less than a minute ago in the running time Gromit was thrown into the storage room.), but i think it did an amazing job with enough storytelling for it to be completely understandable within 30 minutes. The jokes were genuinely funny and didn't seem out of place. My favorite part of the story is that they did a twist with the series where Gromit had a love interest in Fluffles. It was an amazing moment to see her stand up to her owner and save Wallace when Gromit couldn't, and in the end, with no where else to go, joined Wallace and Gromit, who welcomed her into their delivery van to deliver more bread. I hope to see more of her in future Wallace and Gromit projects, or at least know what happened to her if they decide to keep having no-continuity between the shorts and not have her in future adventures. (Although in the story for the AR app Fix Up the City, it seems they kept continuity so maybe there is hope.)

The first one I saw was Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Only because I remember saying to mum in the car next to McDonald's after watching it "mummy from Wallace and Gromit, the lady there has Wotsits hair!" Forget God Save The Queen, Wallace and Gromit should be our National Anthem
Came back to this video after finding out that Netflix is working with Aardman to release a Wallace And Gromit movie sequel so I’m hella excited for that!
One thing I like about a close shave is how Wallace has more agency and a little cleverer. He still retains his bumbilingness, but his skills with inventing which are brought to the forefront with things such as his oatmeal gun being given different applications, and his saving of Grommet makes him more interesting.
Wallace and Gromit always just did cool stuff that you don't really see elsewhere. Like what other film or series has something as simply fun to watch as a bike-sidecar turning into a plane, or having to rapidly place down tracks on a moving toy train.

I think my favorite animation to feature these two legends is "The Curse if the Were-Rabbit". It's as if you take all three of the original short films, combine them into one, and then add a more cinematic touch.
I’ve loved all of these cartoons, I have a set of VHS tapes with A grand day out, Wrong Trousers and A close shave, I even have the Curse of the Wererabbit on DVD
I saw Curse of The Wererabbit when I was in 2nd grade and loved it. 🥰 That Christmas my parents got me the 3 original shorts rather than the movie, but it wasn’t really a loss. 💖🧀
here’s mine ranked: 6, A Grand Day Out 5, Cracking Contraptions 4, A Matter of Loaf and Death 3, A Close Shave 2, The Wrong Trousers 1, Curse of The Were Rabbit 7 if you count the W&G in Project Zoo game! ;)
I started watching Wallis & Grommet first and then started watching the BBC sitcom the Last of the Summer Wine. I think Summer Wine preceded Wallis and Grommet by a few years, but every time I heard Wallis speak, I thought of Peter Sallis, who also played Wallis.
Aardman Studios and their characters will always hold a special place in my heart They have so much personality you can really hear the passion from peter sallis voice voicing wallace may he rest In peace and the animators take pride in their work too this studio along with their characters will always carry a special place in my heart and in my childhood and I hope for more projects from them soon can't wait for Chicken Run 2
The Wrong Trousers has always been my favorite since I first watched it as a little child I just find it to be a tad bit more charming then the other five
Close Shave holds a special place in my heart for being the one I watched the most even if I didn't like it as much as A Grand Day Out or Wrong Trousers. It was the only standalone Wallace and Gromit VHS tape I had, the other two having been recorded off of Cartoon Network or some such channel at some point in time. Curse of the Were Rabbit has some good lines, my dad and I will regularly quote "I'm just crackers about cheese," but having revisited it myself at some point I found it to be exceptionally weak. I don't know if I'd rate it above or below Loaf and Death, which I only watched like once? Sometime close to when it came out, I think, on Netflix if I remember correctly? I'll need to find a way to watch Cracking Contraptions I've never seen it.
Fun fact: After A Grand Day Out’s success, cheese sales skyrocketed and the Wensleydale cheese company mentioned in the short was saved.

The Wrong Trousers felt like an epic full length movie rather then a 30 minute short film for kids

The pacing of The Wrong Trousers is pitch perfect. You forget that it's stop motion and become completely engrossed with the characters and the story. The train chase at the end....absolutely mind blowing.
The animation style and atmosphere in A Grand Day Out always made it stand out for me. The sound design has an almost ASMR quality to it too.
A Close Shave was the first Wallace and Gromit short I ever watched. It was funny then, and it’s still funny now.

6. A Matter of Loaf and Death
5. Cracking Contraptions
4. A Close Shave
3. The Curse of the Were Rabbit
2. A Grand Day Out
1. The Wrong Trousers
1:49 That scene, I think, it's a reference to the 1960s Batman movie (based on the TV show)
"Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb!"
The De-Mud was funny but never fully understood the genius of the Heavy Loam setting until recently.
I’m so looking forward to the new w&g film next year
I saw Curse of The Wererabbit when I was in 2nd grade and loved it. 🥰 That Christmas my parents got me the 3 original shorts rather than the movie, but it wasn’t really a loss. 💖🧀
Curse of the wererabbit is like one of my fav movies of all time.
here’s mine ranked:
6, A Grand Day Out
5, Cracking Contraptions
4, A Matter of Loaf and Death
3, A Close Shave
2, The Wrong Trousers
1, Curse of The Were Rabbit
7 if you count the W&G in Project Zoo game! ;)
We gotta wait until 2024, but welcome home lads
I love how your lowest ranking one’s only complaint that it should have been a movie as it would have been fantastic to see it as one.
Me too! A Close Shave is definitely my favourite. I like A Grand Day Out next, then The Wrong Trousers, followed by The Curse of the Were Rabbit.
Not even gonna mention AMoLaD? 😁
When I was younger I didn't realise that a matter of loaf and death was only a short film
My childhood was Wallace and Gromit a close is hands down the best one
I started watching Wallis & Grommet first and then started watching the BBC sitcom the Last of the Summer Wine. I think Summer Wine preceded Wallis and Grommet by a few years, but every time I heard Wallis speak, I thought of Peter Sallis, who also played Wallis.
2:18 well well well....
The feeling that I got from seeing the video in my recommended is indescribable
amazing video! I agree on every single point that you've made. Great job!
Thank you so much!!
I hope we get a cross over film with W&G and STS. where it shows wallace and Shawn reuniting
The Wrong Trousers has always been my favorite since I first watched it as a little child
I just find it to be a tad bit more charming then the other five
