Sailing Project Atticus you seem to be extremely vulnerable, have you put any thought into a well concealed firearm safe(small). Yes I realize the legal implications, I’m just valuing life over law when it comes to international waters. Stay safe and may the winds forever blow in your favor 👍. Quick question, wouldn’t a radio answer a lot of your questions when it comes to suspicious boats heading directly at you?

This is my first video I’ve seen from you and am hooked! I love the down to earth delivery from you both. Thank you for sharing your journey. Truly inspiring
To me, hands down the single best sailing vlog episode I've seen. Truly had a beginning, middle and end, not a mere series of episodes, with the emotional shifts utterly palpable. Desiree is SO open and articulate about her experiences, her fears, and changes in perspective, hope she writes a memoir at the conclusion of this adventure. I'd read it.
I completely agree. It's really inspirational seeing how far they've come on their passages - how much they've matured and their perspective has changed on miserable sailing moments knowing it's only temporary and part of the experience.
I'm an Sailing Uma fan. But this vlog is an 180 degree difference. Uma is a DIY sailing vlog where 2 architects are improving their boat as they go along. This Vlog is a little more real, where they aren't architects and you have to get by with your strengths wit, and spirit.
You guys are doing great. You'll be telling the story of this passage for the rest of your lives and it will always have been worth it. Well done! Thanks for letting me tag along vicariously. Subscribed!
Very dramatic! I remember reading a story about a guy who went solo around the world. When he got to southeast asia, he was so afraid of piracy, he bought a non-functional replica of an RPG, and it came in handy! Usually, when another vessel got too close, he would haul out his shotgun and display it above his head, and that was enough to scare them off. One time it didn't, so he hauled out the RPG, and started aiming it at them, and that did the trick!

There are places in Caribbean where you can not have Flare Guns on board . I sailed off Fl. coast ,and learned not to go offshore unarmed 50 years ago. I have known a few people who deliver boats World Wide and would sever consider being armed thinking this a bad idea . Have secret secure compartments built for weapons .Learn how ,and when to use them .Shooting targets and hitting the Bulls Eye is not knowing how to use them.
Many gov.s steal your boat not to mention prison .Islands in Caribbean will take everything afloat for having Flare Gun. Broader requirements/Licensing is needed to sail in Europe ,Mediterranean ! Seems the entire planet is being turned into limited access or prison .There are boats being sold in So. Fl. ,and Caribbean because of these requirements rather than sail home not meeting these requirements ,so I have been told by two people selling their boats . I have talked about this with people in delivery service and was told it is bigger problem, more dangerous having firearms on board than not ! I disagree with this ,and the gov.s who will not permit firearms on your boat can keep their Outhouse to themselves .
Carry guns... that happen near Belize on our 52 ft boat...until my brother, dad and I showed the people on the skiff our shotguns and AR... they decided to leave.. good choice for them.
The other thing you use is a waterproof sink bag that is attached to the boat with monofilament which is attacked to a weighted bag over the side..when we were boarded by country law enforcement all guns and ammo went into the bag and over board at about 100 ft. They never found them.
@@chrisharper1225 Do you really think they don't know about this waterproof bags trick? They try to catch narko traffic everyday, they knew everything about it.
fujimatosa yes they do I suppose some do, but three Americans with a boat load of food and alcohol and fishing gear aren't exactly the Costa Nostro cartel in subs. We've been boarded twice and once they never even searched our state rooms. We took pictures with both the panama and Belize coastlies and no one was putting their underwater cameras in the water to look around our boat. As a former cop, I recommend, look the part and act the part and you're home free.. act guilty and suspicious and your in for a cavity search. Could we get caught, yep and such as life, but I'm not getting killed by some scum trying to hijack my boat.
@@chrisharper1225 May it is better to buy handgun, and hide it on the board? I'm not familiar with yatch's interior, but I suppose there is a lot of spaces where you could hide it pretty well. It is just my suggestion.
i love this video cause most of these youtubers that sail the world make it seem like its just pick a location and ill be there whenever i want, and this video shows that there are super troubling times, like she said, she is dreaming of a apartment with ac then be sailing
I had a trawler try to ram me at sun rise, coming out of the sun. I altered course several times and the trawler altered to maintain a bow hit. Having worked out his plan I then kept a steady course but put the engine on but not in gear, as the trawler was about two boat lengths of I started to alter course as soon as he started to match my corse change I put the engine in gear at full power and turned inside of him. I was lucky being in a 52 foot Irwin with a Perkins 4236 84HP engine I was able to pull 10 1/2 knots. By the time the trawler was able to turn I had a good lead and was able to out pace him. Keep a good eye out and work out your plans, a lot of these guys do not want you to be able to recognize their boat.
I recognized the first bay you were in, Uma was there last week!!! I was looking forward to all of of to be reunited after all those years. Thnaks for share an another great episode.
My husband Kenny finds your videos of you both enjoying life to the fullest very relaxing and it helps his anxiety. we wish you both a happy and fore filling journey....
This is an incredible channel, so glad it popped up in my feed. What a great adventure, and awesome idea to document & share it. You guys rock! Now I gotta binge out on the rest of yer catalog. THIS is how you ride out a global pandemic. Seems like you guys got some shit seriously figured out about life. [I must say though-I am shocked how expensive it is just for someone who already has a seaworthy sailboat to sail just across the Gulf. That costs in excess of 2 grand??! Damn man. Seems like a lot (to someone who doesn’t know shit about anything, that is)].
I say a bomb. Threaten to blow yourself up...pirates sailing the other way...awwwww....pirates dont want to play? Come back and play... as she zips up her bomber jacket.
Having a gun on board would definitely calm my nerves. You dont have to tell anyone about it and just keep it hidden. Not illegal if no one but you know its there. Boom legal
I heard about a boat that would carry a very long fishing net with them. In the case that they were being chased down they would let the net out and move in a zig zag so any incoming boat would have to go though the net to get to them and most likely getting their prop caught in the net in the process.
Ridiculous, if your dragging a extra long net and zig zagging, the net plus the constant turning will leave you moving so slowly that they will just approach from the bow or a 45% angle, I would have a gun for every person on board and make sure they are trained well enough to handle them safely and put some rounds on target if need be, I don’t think they would expect all crew to be armed even if it’s just 2 people, maybe a fouling rope rigged very carefully could be of use at night but a fishing net? Not practical, zig zagging depending on the boat might be helpful
First episode i have watched. I have seen several other ones but so far you are Only ones truly roughing it without the frills or a trust fund or funds period, which makes the adventure much more difficult and real! So if i can spare something living on bare social security I will! I have spent much time on adventures on the water and am jealous of your adventure now that I am older and land locked and missing it. So keep it up for us living the dream through you !
@@colemant6845 Tie a little rope on em and tie the other end to an old anchor, then drop the stainless steel overboard in pretty deep water. Maybe a water jug for a marker so you can come back later and get 'em. In Belize, you will land in jail for a while not having a registered (shot)gun (every year you must re-register). Easy to be a convict there, I don't recommend Belize.
Thia is a fun video. You guys are fun and I congratulate you on how calm and focussed you both remain when stressed. Unless the freak outs are edited out. In any case, thanks for the video.
Sailing with your girl alone and I know she is a handy girl, definitely calls for a couple of guns and ammunition to defend her and the boat...good luck and be wise......oh and get a radar....👽🤙
Stephen O that’s why it’s better to be judge by twelve then carried by six. P.s. I can already guess you will argue with me about the specifics of who would judge them. You get the point!!!!!
Does your destination outweigh your safety the ocean is a big place I would think going to a different location would be better than risking you and your wife's lives
Very courageous young couple. I now understand how sailing can weigh heavy on the nervous system. I could not do it at my age without a nervous breakdown. What do you do for stress. Do you take meds and or alchohol or weed to get through the unpleasant times. I don't know you but I am very proud of both of you and wish I had a chance to meet you you are famous heroes in my eyes.
😁 thanks Kelley! as for the stress on passage, the best thing is sleep when possible. caffeine and alcohol just make you more prone to sea sickness. that's why when we get to land I like to sleep for almost a whole day straight!! -Desiree
Hello New Subscriber from San Diego / Baja, Mexico...Former Law Enforcement Officer, Day Sailor and fisherman...Love the Episode on the Pirate attack...Very Good information and I would also Strongly Advise against carrying Firearms... Unless you can do so Legally in every Jurisdiction, which is highly unlikely and more likely to land you in Big Trouble with the Local Law...and Unless you are Trained and Prepared to use them... the majority of time your own weapon will be taken away and used against yourself...Obviously the best Defense against Would be Pirates is to Be Prepared and have a Plan...try to prevent them from getting on the boat in the first place...with Alarms, Sirens, bright Spot Lights, a loud PA system telling them to ''stay away the authorities have been notified''... ''you are being Recorded and Broadcasted on the Internet''...Have your own Display of Force such as Flairs, Fireworks and other Alternative Weapons ready to use that may be on board the boat including but not limited to; Flare guns, Spear guns, Hawaiian sling, shark bang sticks, fishing knives, sledge hammer...Tools such as a propane torch or Flame Thrower, nail gun (not that a cruising boat would normally carry a nail gun but if you had one charged and ready for Defensive Purposes, maybe you could convince Port Authorities that it was for work purposes and they would not confiscate it), same with a chainsaw, compressed air Tank with some kind of Projectile ready to fire...and in an Extreme Life or Death Emergency situation a Gasoline Bomb...(Molotov cocktail) is a breakable glass bottle containing a flammable substance such as gasoline/petrol or a napalm-like mixture, with some motor oil added, and usually a source of ignition such as a burning cloth wick held in place by the bottle's stopper. The wick is usually soaked in alcohol or kerosene, rather than gasoline. In action, the wick is lit and the bottle hurled at a target such as the Pirate's boat. When the bottle smashes on impact, the ensuing cloud of petrol droplets and vapour ignites, causing an immediate fireball followed by a raging fire as the remainder of the fuel is consumed. A poor man's grenade if you will could be assembled from household products...MacGyver style...Good Luck, (Disclaimer as I would not Recommend this or any kind of physical resistance against armed Pirates)..Almost forgot my High Tech Security Deterrent. The Drone !!! Fly a drone over the potential Pirates recording their every movement and their Faces with the Idea that they are Identified and the Whole World is Watching Them...again Be Prepared and Mentally Tough to do whatever it takes to Survive...Good Luck
What really inspired me is the Captain's speech of the Day...." TEAMWORK" . It reminds me of my wife in everything, any where, or whatever, we see to it teamwork much always be apply as couple in any circumstances of our lives. Thanks guys. Stay safe and be blessed everyone.
@@victoreous626 Also, the AR15 is more accurate and easier to use. They still have to get near you to board and even a pistol would make that difficult for them.
Not just the AR-15, but have a handgun or a Remington 870 shot gun with a 18 or 14 inch barrel in case they get close. Use heavy buckshot load in the shotgun to disperse the asswipe criminals if they board or come in close.
@@victoreous626 The 7.62x39 AK round is "somewhat" accurate out to about 300 meters. The is considered it's combat effective range. A good shooter might be able to push it further than that, but the holdover has to be significant. The 5.56x45 round has a combat effective range of 550 meters. I used to qualify in the USMC, and part of our annual qualifications were at 500 meters. The 5.56 has a flatter and faster trajectory. Now based on my time in the range as a civilian, the AK47 sucks. It's a spray and pray rifle. While I can easily group 10rds in a 1.5" group with an AR15, my groups with AK47s are usually 6". My SKS is better, about 4.5".
To trip the pirates out...they could get some syrup or something that looks like blood. Cover her with it and splatter some on his face and clothes, and on a machete. Make it look like they had gotten into a bad argument that went too far. Pirates slide up and see that....pirates be leaving real fast. Probably toss him a 6 pack of pirate bootybeer

Have you considered doing any "smoking" for preservation? IE: Smoking the meat vs pre-cooking it? Small smokers are available and they can use readily available wood to do the smoking. Smoked meat can then be vacuum packed in plastic for really long term preservation or just stuffed into ziplock bags for medium term preservation. Might be worth it to have a cache of well preserved protein on board.
I can a lot of meat. My favorite is ground sausage meat, but many meats can be canned with simple equipment. On a long passage opening a jar of ground sausage meat or bacon is like a little slice of heaven. Btw I don't have refrigeration.
Those weapons would be ineffective. Guns are tools and you need the right tool for the job. You want penetration, range and a heavy grain. 308, 30-06 or 762x54r.
Refreshing video as you guys are Doin something I and many others only dreamed about! Yet, your RUclips title caught my eye- Attacked by pirates- ('Pirata's in that part of the world!') As I used to do tours around El Caribe-- Cancun, Belize, Guatemala and down to Roatan. That whole area IS the real historical waters of The Pirates of the Caribe (Note Why the Spanish built forts all around their shores!) However, and y'all should be mindful- but Latin America has really been 'hit' Badly in economic terms and this no doubt will push, even force mild mannered local fishermen and locals to become 'pirata's again'!!!!! All in all- pray for sound advice and keep a v. good lookout as you go!
Actually, a small torpedo would be a better weapon, as I would think Pirates have sub machine guns, not single action pistols! With a torpedo, you could sink their craft...but then, they might have one as well, and do the same to you!
@@dalewatkins9889 all you would need is a small firearm, firing a few warning shots through those security bars would probably be enough to deter them and make them sail off to leave you alone.

Any problems having guns on boats in foreign countries ?
The other thing you use is a waterproof sink bag that is attached to the boat with monofilament which is attacked to a weighted bag over the side..when we were boarded by country law enforcement all guns and ammo went into the bag and over board at about 100 ft. They never found them.
@@chrisharper1225
Do you really think they don't know about this waterproof bags trick?
@@chrisharper1225
May it is better to buy handgun, and hide it on the board? I'm not familiar with yatch's interior, but I suppose there is a lot of spaces where you could hide it pretty well. It is just my suggestion.
Good job guys, stay safe!
Fabulous. Great job. Wonderful experience.
If I were them, and I did have a gun, I wouldn’t tell the internet or anyone else.
Thisss
Yep
I agree nobody's business 😆😆😆
You can have as many guns as you want on a sailing vessel especially when sailing the open ocean period no permit required.
WattsUpDev it’s not wrong the only issue with guns is when you enter certain countries they take them and give them back when you leave
That was stressful just watching it glad you made it be safe and live free
i love this video cause most of these youtubers that sail the world make it seem like its just pick a location and ill be there whenever i want, and this video shows that there are super troubling times, like she said, she is dreaming of a apartment with ac then be sailing
I watched the whole video! This is a masterpiece right here.
I recognized the first bay you were in, Uma was there last week!!! I was looking forward to all of of to be reunited after all those years. Thnaks for share an another great episode.
I like how you thank your patrons. I give to Sailing into Freedom and never heard anything
Check out one of the live web chats!
My mom and step dad sailed from Florida to Europe. Reminds me of the stories they had. Good luck in y’all adventures and stay safe.
Great content. Enjoyed watching .It brought back so many memories.
"You know what waves have?" "uh, water... dolphins" "ya.. but they don't have teamwork!" great speach buds
Out of that whole video ....... that's all you go?...... wow
But waves are nothing but teamwork! An infinite number of molecules, all in harmonious unison.
I really enjoy watching you both sailing around.
My husband Kenny finds your videos of you both enjoying life to the fullest very relaxing and it helps his anxiety. we wish you both a happy and fore filling journey....
I'll definitely have a gun on the boat I don't care what people say protect your self
You two are an awesome crew. Jordan is a level headed and clear thinking Captain; and Desiree, you are a terrific First Mate. Love your laugh.
Damn man. Seems like a lot (to someone who doesn’t know shit about anything, that is)].
i love how the argument here is "Hey guns are illegal" and the response is "Hey, lets set them on fire with Molotov's and flairs".
Utter ignorance
I say a bomb. Threaten to blow yourself up...pirates sailing the other way...awwwww....pirates dont want to play? Come back and play... as she zips up her bomber jacket.
Beautiful story you two. Thanks for sharing this passage.
After 30 years on the ocean I barely remember the misery but the thrill of it will always be with me.
Please keep using your safety equipment.
@gsweater Nothing but easy. Had 2L of water and 4 cans of spam.
Having a gun on board would definitely calm my nerves. You dont have to tell anyone about it and just keep it hidden. Not illegal if no one but you know its there. Boom legal
Worried about you guys and missed your weekly vid this week. Hope the little one is well.
@@bigeyetuna6228 thought the same thing.
So getting to the Pacific sounds pretty good..... Hey mad skills with both of you on the fore deck wrestling your head sail down!
I admire you guys. A new supporter from the Philippines, I love your videos and your amazing videos.
"Well, sweetheart, THAT'S why my super power fishing speargun has a scope."...
Good plan 🤣
The freeway every day is also terrifying and stressful and a lot more guns per square mile. Gotta love the sea for all that she is.
YOU ARE THE FIRST SAILORS WE SEE USING THE HARNEST...
SMART !!!!
Very cool guys. Congrats. I’d love to sail but I don’t have a sailboat, or experience or a the balls to do that. But I love watching you do your thing
Glad to see your still out there!! Hope all is well and your safe in your sailing ⛵
Note to self. Make my sailboat have hydrofoils and high powered engines hidden somewhere.
If I was going to risk my life definitely would have night vision and firearms, rifles etc.
@rumpleforeskin73 stay in international waters and hide your shit well when you go to port
No Guns??? They are on my boat and always will be! My plan is to just toss OB when necessary. Would cost less than your "Sacrificial Cash" LOL

Sailing with your girl alone and I know she is a handy girl, definitely calls for a couple of guns and ammunition to defend her and the boat...good luck and be wise......oh and get a radar....👽🤙

Sadly that's illegal from my understanding and you can get in some major trouble

I've never known a relationship to last when the man calls his lady "bud"

Yeah I kept looking around for a freaking dog. EVERyTImE one of them said BUD
Thats why I carry an AR15 when fishing offshore...
ar? Not long enough of range. They beat you in range with a cheap ak. Just saying.....
@@victoreous626 No. No they don't
Awesomely produced vid. Might be one of your best ever, technically
I would be hiding her if pirates showed up!!!

Might be worth it to have a cache of well preserved protein on board.
thanks for the tip
I can a lot of meat. My favorite is ground sausage meat, but many meats can be canned with simple equipment. On a long passage opening a jar of ground sausage meat or bacon is like a little slice of heaven. Btw I don't have refrigeration.
Definitely an AR-15 and a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with dragon's breath ammo
Here come the straw hats
Dragons breath is useless it's like throwing a sparkler at them unless they are right in front of you
Buckshot em!

Those weapons would be ineffective. Guns are tools and you need the right tool for the job. You want penetration, range and a heavy grain. 308, 30-06 or 762x54r.
Straight away I can tell this is a real sailing channel.
There is a reason why my Grandpa tells my brother and I to bring our guns when we go sailing anywhere there can be remotely any threats.
I’m sorry but all I can think of when watching this is “sea of thieves” 😂
Refreshing video as you guys are Doin something I and many others only dreamed about!
Yet, your RUclips title caught my eye- Attacked by pirates- ('Pirata's in that part of the world!') As I used to do tours around El Caribe-- Cancun, Belize, Guatemala and down to Roatan. That whole area IS the real historical waters of The Pirates of the Caribe (Note Why the Spanish built forts all around their shores!)
However, and y'all should be mindful- but Latin America has really been 'hit' Badly in economic terms and this no doubt will push, even force mild mannered local fishermen and locals to become 'pirata's again'!!!!!
All in all- pray for sound advice and keep a v. good lookout as you go!
Shouldn’t be going on a trip like that without a firearm
Amen to that
Second that
Actually, a small torpedo would be a better weapon, as I would think Pirates have sub machine guns, not single action pistols! With a torpedo, you could sink their craft...but then, they might have one as well, and do the same to you!
@@dalewatkins9889 haha I like your thinking.
@@dalewatkins9889 all you would need is a small firearm, firing a few warning shots through those security bars would probably be enough to deter them and make them sail off to leave you alone.
