No offence, but you seem to be misunderstanding a few things. Only rich Han Chinese (HC) women had bound feet (BF). Manchu and Mongol women didnt. Han clans that joined the Manchu Eight Banners (M8B) didnt BF either. The M8B is the social class that the Manchu/Qing empire created. At the top is the royal family (Aisin Goro clan), then the royal dukes that can pass their titles down, then the royal dukes that are kind of like Prince du Sang where they are known to have royal blood but cannot pass their titles down and they + their kids cannot inherit the throne), then comes the M8B clans (which also has internal rank of high and middle and low class clans), then the HC people who joined M8B, then the rich HC people not in the M8B, then the middle class HC people, then the lower class HC people. As I was saying, only rich HC women outside M8B get BF. If you are lower status than that, no BF. If you are higher status than that, no BF. This will be a long explanation. There is a word limit on YT, so I will break up my explanation into many parts. This is part 1.
This will be a very long explanation, so bear with me. Han is the majority Chinese race. They are not the same as the tribe of Han Xiangjian (the concubine in this episode that cried because the emperor was going to sleep with her). I will call this concubine XJ. Despite XJ's "surname", that's not her surname. It's her clan name. She is a Uyghur/Uighur - a ethnic minority "race" that was conquered by Qing China (aka the Manchu empire). Her clan is the Han clan and they are part of the Uighur race. The Han Chinese are different. They are the ones you think of as Chinese nowadays if you say "Jane is Chinese". It means an indication of her race, i.e., she is descended from the majority race in China. Some HC clans joined the M8B because they were ex-aristocrats of the previous dynasty and had to do it to survive. These HC clans adopted Manchu ways etc. These women did not bind feet. The only HC women who had BF were rich HC ones not in M8B. This is because their menfolk thought walking in tiny steps in a pigeon-like gait (google it or watch how maiko/geiko walk to get an idea; it's similar but not quite the same) is pretty, small feet (no more than 3 inches) is erotic. Imagine you are a HC woman from a rich family. You can only marry another rich HC family that is not in M8B. Why? Because they won't marry Manchus and Mongols as they/their families hate them for conquering China and ruling over HC people. They're like "How dare these minority people take over my country and rule over me. The HC who join them are scum and we hate these HC traitors too." Sadly, there are still HC nowadays that think like that and bring up their kids to think like that. I know because I am part Manchu on my father's side and part Mongol on my mother's side, and we get such treatment from some (not all) not-at-all openminded HC. As I was saying, you a rich non-M8B woman and you can only marry back someone from the same social class as you and the same race as you which means you must have BF to get a man. To get MF takes almost 2 years because they break the bones in your feet repeatedly and bend them into the slim-wedge-like "golden lotus" shape and bind this up, do this over many many months. And your feet must be treated with herbs and stuff to prevent rotting as this goes on. The herbal treatment and wash continues for the rest of your life whenever you wash your feet. After your feet are in the correct shape and the bones are broken and cannot go back to their normal feet shape, they are bound. This is done again and again. Every time your BF are bound, it will be wrapped up tighter x2 until you are 3 inches on each foot. Your feet will then be "set" that way for a few months like jelly/jello/gelatin. When they are set that way, you will know. How? When you remove the binding, your feet stay that way in that shape and size without any sign that it will "move" back to its natural shape. After that, you need to walk and learn how to do it in the pigeon-gait way. That can take months. But because you are in pain all the time, walking is slow for you. Luckily, you are a rich HC and you will marry a rich HC, so you will have servants to carry you (the super rich ones had servants hired only for this purpose in addition to other servants) and servants to do everything for you. Every time you wash your feet, it will take hours because you will unbind all the cloths from your BF, use the herbals etc and wash it Then the drying process is also hours-long because you want to make sure all the parts of your now deformed feet are dry or you will get infection or they will root. This means all the cracks, nooks, crannies between what used to be your other toes and elsewhere will be cleaned. So you need to be a super rich HC woman from a rich family to have BF and marry into a rich HC family to continue to maintain your feet that way. Mongol women need to hunt and ride horses and BF can't do all that, and it's not in their culture either. But Manchu and Mongol men want their women to do all that but be dainty too. So how to be dainty, wear platform shoes. Google manchu platform shoes to see what they look like. In Manchu, we call this flower pot shoes because it's a thick wedge that looks like a flower pot where the top (close to the sole) is wide and the part on the ground is narrower. They can be 6-10cm high. You think it's easy to walk in that? No. If you watched Legend of Zhenhuan, you will notice that Shen Meizhuang had to learn to walk in those shoes and swing her hand with the hanky in the correct dainty way before she entered the palace for the concubine selection parade. It's not easy. That's why you need servants to help you when you kneel, get up from your chair, get up from kneeling position, etc. If you fall down from that height, you can get hurt badly. Worse, you get up and you step on the hem of your dress and then you fall down and your injury will be broken bones. Okay, now let's move on. Notice that the personal maids of the concubines (the ones the mistress is close too) don't have bound feet. They are lesser members of M8B. Of course, Mongol princesses from other independent tribes (the Barin for example) also entered as concubines because of political reasons to maintain peace and prevent the Manchu/Qing empire from swallowing them. Princesses from tribes of ethnic minority races that are conquered by the Qing also become concubines for political reasons to ensure that her chieftain father toes the line and not betray the empire on the one hand and also the emperor can show that he is not going to discriminate against their tribe. this is part 3. to be continued.
