Man was I sure surprised when I came back this past year to find otherwise! LOL - Otherwise though honestly ... wtf is the point of having "Seasons"?
I’d like to see an update to the SR system that prioritizes individual play over whether the team wins or loses. I had a game last night where I did over 22k damage and we lost. I don’t mind so much except for the fact I know my SR will go down because of it. I think if you pop off and your team loses anyway, you should be penalized a little less, and maybe the players on the winning team who essentially got carried should be rewarded a little less as well.
Overwatch’s player base has definitely gotten better, I took a break before role queue and I peaked at 2800 before falling back to where I probably belonged at low plat Now, coming back to the game I placed at 2300 damage, 2200, and 1600 support, thankfully I was able to climb out of silver support but it was a lot harder than I ever thought it’d be

The game has def levelled up. I was mid plat from season 3 to about 23. Then I stopped playing for a while and when I came back dropped to mid gold. And this guy would get slaughtered in mid gold. He’s doing a lot of things right but not getting punished when he makes a mistake.
Yes as a silver tank and dps player, I can confirm this is what silver is like. And as a hard stuck gold support player who aaaaalmost reached plat, I can tell you plat is far, far, far away from this player's reach. I would advise you to do an unranked to GM series, maybe playing badly so you can start in lower elos, so you can see what they are really like and then will be able to give more accurate estimates
I think bronze to gm gets a better view of the full playerbase since most people are in gold plat and silv and you just skip gold and silv if you do unranked
I think what happens is mainly that there are just fewer players playing competitive, especially the lower rank players in the past. If a normal distribution of ranks is still maintained, then a lot of players could be pushed down to lower ranks.
Its because everyone's on alts now lol. People high up can't get games or play with their friends. So they smurf in low elos, plus not a lot of new players coming in. Its all old players with the bronze borders these days.
Meanwhile there is me with my one account still bronze border cause I just don't seem to have the time to play as much as everyone else does, so I see gold and silver borders everywhere but im just a little old bronze 4 star.

I think what Sty forgets sometimes is that silver/gold players (the majority of the playerbase) have watched pro gamers + GMs on RUclips for years. So there are now weird momentary high level tactics even in the lower ranks, mostly emulated from watching these sorts of videos. But people aren't pulling them off all the time. Sty you are one of the reasons silver plays better than you'd expect from silver. :) Silver players are even watching this right now, making silver better even more. Silvers try Overwatch League flanks / map-specific techniques all the time. Obviously they rarely work effectively but the intent is there and it does make the games more challenging. The main reason why they are Silver is their positioning on defense. They keep feeding even if they are getting 1-2 kills often times before going down. Dying that often without making a bigger impact (such as getting 3-4 kills) really drags down the team.
It really feels that way that everyone is actually pretty good now and sometimes elos don't really show it as much a gold team cam beat a diamond team with good communication any day imo
i hate to say this stylosa but this is silver, i would say low silver too. silver is so screwed up right now so we have people who are smurf from plat and diamond (occasionally masters to) getting into the lower ranks so it so unbalanced. there is a stark divided between the people good and the bad and they're all mixed together. try some silver games you might be surprised
As a silver dps, I haven’t been playing OW for long but just recently started putting up very good numbers. When I have good stats, I win and rank up. Ive gone from a 1300 SR to 1800 SR very quickly. My point is, If your putting up numbers as a low level overwatch player, you should have success and rank up. I see myself getting to gold soon but I definitely realize that I will probably hit a wall pretty soon.
Numbers mean nothing. This is a team-based game. DPS think they are popping off all the time but aren't assisting with win conditions, or their team is suffering against a team that is playing the objective well, or they're dying every minute like this guy is. Remember it's theoretically possible to win a match without killing a single person however unlikely that may be.
@@nicholasaragon4126 very true. Especially when playing someone like widow or doom. You can easily win your team fights and the game without having a single medal.
Yeah I think this is one of the problems. If he does rank up, he's going to get knocked back down unless he fixes some bad habits. He made a lot of mistakes and simply wasn't punished for them
In my experience the dps players in gold silver have actually gotten a decent amount better at the game but performing well is rarely enough to actually win games, the level at which you need to carry is pretty insane, getting 2 or 3 picks in a teamfight on a dps means virtually nothing most of the time when your supports do nothing but spam heals into your tanks who never press w, there is this mentality in silver that dps are responsible for healing themselves, making the space and killing the whole team in every fight. As a Low masters support main it's pretty frustrating to see.
THanks for the vid and for the OW stuff! My gf floats between bronze and silver, she started last dec . . . yes there tons of great players there, shes gotten out of 600 and now is 800-900 now (w/ your vids as she doesn't listen to me much) and we love your videos. If i was ranking up now in her time (I was 2017-2018 lower metal), its a lot harder to rank up as there are so many good players in her comp that'd rival those in my rank (plat )
Honestly, i wish i had waited to do ranked. If anyone remembers i was the low silv genji and main reason was i just needed simple tips and up my sense. If i had just waited i coulda easily placed low gold like im ranked now and woulda saved me like 3 months of grinding comp
@@ozone9691 You have the wrong mentality there,if you place lower, embrace it and practice getting rid of bad habits, work better on aim and positioning etc,you care too much about your rank, you shouldn't as long as you're below gm. If you treat every game you play like a chance to get better regardless of team performance you will climb and climb,no matter what hero you play. Game sense alone can get you to low/mid masters.
Aim is actually pretty good for silver but the decision making is terrible. The team would’ve been so staggered if the Mercy didn’t Rez him when they took first point, and he keeps spamming shurikens down range instead of getting off angles as Genji and picking off the enemy backline. Genji has insane mobility but this guys just staying put, might as well play Soldier or McCree. This player could be ply if they just played their heroes correctly.
In the last fight at first round, I think he was looking for the nano and that is why he was holding the blade. As a fellow silver I understand why he held it but also know that blading instantly would be better
I agree. Inconsistency and the tendency to show their best gameplay only because that's what makes them feel talented and smart as opposed to the 10 previous matches where they were uncoordinated, tilted, raging, bad picks, etc.
I agree. I climbed from silver to gold now by maining mcree and I remember it being fairly easy since they don’t think of other characters and what they would plan (like the obvious mcree high noon flank or rein shatter) Good comms are always the key but you’re just ducked if teammates don’t listen or have an idea what to do. I’ve been struggling a bit on tank since I climbed to platinum because of leavers and trying to enable while communicating with my team but not sure what else I could do. Especially when I find myself getting silver damage a lot playing more aggressive for my team to be enabled
@@SuperMisteryMan01 I tottaly feel, I pushed my dps out of silver with a many many game win streak. I'm a plat tank for reference. Best of luck on your games man.
@@jessewong1355 best of luck on your games too man I’m at like 2478 SR but the rating system I guess has let me still stay platinum cuz of my play during those losses like how I’ve mentioned and I’m scared to play and potentially fall to gold again 😭 But it’s alright yk it’s just what happens in OW I got to platinum thru a lot of grind as a tank and I feel like I got more confidence in play at least
I've been gold and high platinum most of my overwatch career. I just came back after a long while and wow the players are so much better I placed in silver for dps which is crazy to me and I've found it incredibly hard to climb out even when I am carrying my team and idk the players overall are actually really good in silver now. I think Stye needs to go into a silver game and see how good the players have actually become.
The issue is many people think these lower Elos are much worse than they in fact are, mostly because they think of silver as it was when they were in it 3 years ago or so and things have changed a lot since then, I was 1549SR a year ago and I went back on a new account recently and things are harder there
I’ve gotten a 54 kill streak before in silver… as Dva. I can’t perform as well as that now, but I’ve climbed up to gold and still do relatively well(34ish elims average, 2-3 deaths per game)
I think a lot of people don't realize how much better the player base has gotten - this is DEFINITELY silver gameplay, nothing too out of the ordinary. Damn, it can be some high bronze as well
This video made me feel much better about my situation. I'm a silver Ashe main and to hear Sty say this person was good enough for Gold or Plat gives me a little more confidence to climb. This looks similar to me. I push high ground a little more due to watching coaching vids and use dynamite on CD when I think I have a shot. I was concerned that I was somehow cursed or something since I have moderately good aim and good positioning, but still couldn't climb. Good to know that Silver is just a much more skilled place to be than it used to be. Guess it's just a grind!
Something needs to be kept in mind, at gold and lower it is not a 6v6 game. At gold and lower its 6 individuals vs 6 individuals, not a team of 6 vs a team of 6. Gold and lower is a completely different game than Diamond up
My main which is a diamond border has been hard stuck in high gold - mid plat since I started , both my alts are in high diamond. If they actually knew how much the elo has changed they would do an mmr reset. It's actually gotten insane at this point the influx of new players who end up getting good enough to rank up get stuck because every other player is just as good I'm not kidding high gold through diamond is almost completely the same, same amount of callouts , see leavers , throwers . I have a friend in masters who made a smurf and it's hard stuck in plat. He said it's like playing a masters game
Just because it's working for you now, doesn't mean it's good to do, what might work in lower ranks, embeds your mistakes and keeps you in lower ranks. Play like the rank you want to be in, not the one you are in. Apart from being able to get away with a bit more aggression.
No matter what role I play, Tank, Support, or Dmg, I always get gold damage idk why, but yeah I'm hardstuck Plat & Gold. I even dropped an 87 kill game as Sym and we still lost. Can't wait for OW2, players these days are hard to deal with on your own team

If you really that much better than what your SR is it should not be a problem to carry yourself as DPS
@@marco21111 no dude im in a good rank rn but i wish i had waited to do my placements because i was ass before
@@ozone9691 You have the wrong mentality there,if you place lower, embrace it and practice getting rid of bad habits, work better on aim and positioning etc,you care too much about your rank, you shouldn't as long as you're below gm. If you treat every game you play like a chance to get better regardless of team performance you will climb and climb,no matter what hero you play. Game sense alone can get you to low/mid masters.
@@0Charb yknow i never thought about it like that. That’s actually some good advice man
Aim is actually pretty good for silver but the decision making is terrible.
I feel like even tho Low ranks can absolutely play like a plat or whatever, it is their inconsistency which holds them back
I agree. Inconsistency and the tendency to show their best gameplay only because that's what makes them feel talented and smart as opposed to the 10 previous matches where they were uncoordinated, tilted, raging, bad picks, etc.
50elms, normal for me I'm kind of a god gamer, should be top 500 but my team keeps me in silver!
Wow, hadn't noticed how long it's been since ive seen one of these. Hope your health continues to improve... bruv.
Love the video!
1:13 you turning into Junkrat
Woooow! Sty I miss you! Hope you are better.
Overanalyzed is back!
I won't lie, this feels super silver. I played some dps games down there, It truly isn't that good.
I agree. I climbed from silver to gold now by maining mcree and I remember it being fairly easy since they don’t think of other characters and what they would plan (like the obvious mcree high noon flank or rein shatter)
Good comms are always the key but you’re just ducked if teammates don’t listen or have an idea what to do.
@@jessewong1355 best of luck on your games too man
I’m at like 2478 SR but the rating system I guess has let me still stay platinum cuz of my play during those losses like how I’ve mentioned and I’m scared to play and potentially fall to gold again 😭
But it’s alright yk it’s just what happens in OW
I got to platinum thru a lot of grind as a tank and I feel like I got more confidence in play at least
@@SuperMisteryMan01 Tank is the only role i'm able to carry on, my other roles aren't good enough where I can consistently pop off... too bad
@@jessewong1355 tank is the easiest role to Carry with so makes since
I've been gold and high platinum most of my overwatch career. I just came back after a long while and wow the players are so much better I placed in silver for dps which is crazy to me and I've found it incredibly hard to climb out even when I am carrying my team and idk the players overall are actually really good in silver now. I think Stye needs to go into a silver game and see how good the players have actually become.
"Actually Die!"
Like what in real life...
That's kinda dark man...
*Sniffling in the corner of the room*
I'm a silver player and I see guys like this all the time
The issue is many people think these lower Elos are much worse than they in fact are, mostly because they think of silver as it was when they were in it 3 years ago or so and things have changed a lot since then, I was 1549SR a year ago and I went back on a new account recently and things are harder there
I’ve gotten a 54 kill streak before in silver… as Dva.
Damn, it can be some high bronze as well
Most satisfying laugh to listen to 😂👌
This video made me feel much better about my situation.
Gold and lower is a completely different game than Diamond up
I’ve said it before I’ll say it again gold is easier then silver and bronze the first time I made gold I instantly climbed to 2300
One day Sty say: I been called… I must answer, always
My main which is a diamond border has been hard stuck in high gold - mid plat since I started , both my alts are in high diamond.
If they actually knew how much the elo has changed they would do an mmr reset.
It's actually gotten insane at this point the influx of new players who end up getting good enough to rank up get stuck because every other player is just as good
I'm not kidding high gold through diamond is almost completely the same, same amount of callouts , see leavers , throwers . I have a friend in masters who made a smurf and it's hard stuck in plat. He said it's like playing a masters game
He is playing against pharmacy in silver, did you really expect him to not lose ?
ITS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!
Just because it's working for you now, doesn't mean it's good to do, what might work in lower ranks, embeds your mistakes and keeps you in lower ranks. Play like the rank you want to be in, not the one you are in. Apart from being able to get away with a bit more aggression.
Most silver to gold players are good players with just limited knowledge of counters and bad teamwork
No matter what role I play, Tank, Support, or Dmg, I always get gold damage idk why, but yeah I'm hardstuck Plat & Gold. I even dropped an 87 kill game as Sym and we still lost. Can't wait for OW2, players these days are hard to deal with on your own team
I mean, if you're getting gold damage as support that's probably why you're losing lol
@@BrofUJu Yeah my team needs to do more damage. I’m always doing it. And no Zen and Moira which I play if I’m healer do a ton of damage, idk what you’re talking about
Coach chad is back
