The 1984 Winter Olympic Games illuminated the world stage in a brief moment of global unity - a ray of light that was later overshadowed by the Bosnian War. In Sarajevo, Eastern and Western powers came together, temporarily setting aside their political differences. Impressive new sports venues were erected to proudly represent Yugoslavia - concrete monuments that nowadays lie dormant. In this video, we explore the legacy of the 1984 Winter Olympics, which seems shattered and riddled with bullet holes. Yet, within these ruins, we also find hope. I was thirty years old when the 84 Winter Olympics were held, and I followed the tragic war closely from California. Senseless genocide is buried so deep in our DNA, that it seems as though Genocides will always be with us. We are a brutal and murderous race, that kills anything that sets off feelings of severe xenophobia within us. I am very concerned that genocide is not only part of our past, and present, but grotesquely overshadows our near term & long term future. Thank You, I love your work.

If you look deeper it is not really the politicians - they are just the administrators of a vast and deeply hidden and historic control structure. We are the pawns in the system. It is a giant chess game with suffering on all who are caught up in it.
I grew up during this era.. It greatly affect me as I watch the news on the massacres in Congo and Yugoslavia war. The world just stood by .. I forget how it end but these 2 wars are differents because the it was a genocide, killing everyone everything. Such a cruel time.. but this video bring me hope that healing has begin.. such a beautiful people, beautiful country..
The world did not stood by, the West caused the war in Bosnia like in Ukraine today.

Amazing video guys. The story telling and the sound track just about broke my heart. Really touched me. War is never pretty, my heart goes out to the people affected by it. When i was in high school we had an exchange student from Slovakia. He once commented on the war. He didnt have words to express how horrible it had been. He was only glad that they had peace again. He said that many of the buildings from the Olympics had been destroyed. I remember he commented about how onw of the skating buildings had became a graveyard where a mass murder had taken place. I think it was a type of cultural cleansing of sort. He wasn't clear and he didn't like talking about it. He never said how close he was to the battle or if his family had relicated as a result or anything else. I can imagine that so.ething like that must have been hard for a kid to grow up in and live with the knowledge that any day could be your last. Agin beautifully told. Thanks for sharing this.
This is another beautiful video! When you were speaking with the people from the village at the end I was getting chills just thinking about what they went through. The scenery in the mountains is stunning, I especially liked seeing the fog moving through the trees. Thank you also to Lukas for choosing such complimentary music to accompany the video! Civil war is particularly devastating & tragic. As Spain and other places. If peace-keeping wasn't there in place, I think war would follow, even today. Too much grim atrocitices were committed, still in memory. The world need love, peace & understanding. Not war.

How about we let them split peacefully into two states which already have clear borders and are already ethnically monogamous so each nation goes its own way? Instead of forcing the 3 nations with 3 mutually exclusive political, cultural and societal views, who fought each other in a war, to live in a single, totally dysfunctional state?
The West is the cause of the war in Bosnia like in Ukraine. The whole world knows that.
This was thoroughly enjoyable! I love seeing the landscape. It is very reminiscent of where I was raised when the mist rises out of the mountains. I am so pleased to see more of the Brutalist architecture! That's one of the styles I miss when I studied Art. Everything came together so good in this video. as someone whos born in 89, my very first memory is my father waiting for the bus going to war. only later i understood what it meant. thankfully , he returned... but memories remain. east croatia, and especially bosnia, have wounds that will take a few more decades to heal, if even then, unlike the west where war has been mostly forgotten, cities completely reconstructed, and only sporadic army spots still hold the war story alive. bad policitcs, corruption, and a non existed will to change the system is why the rest of the country is still suffocated wtih war stories, destroyed public monumens, buildings, roads, etc. it's been already 1 generation since the war ended, a complete generation of people that never saw a glimpse of war, yet their mouth are full with war... we'll never change, and we'll always keep that patriotism that doesn't mean anything today, all ex-yu countries are falling apart, with bad economies, high unemployment rates, emigration, low pays, and corrupted politics. ... nice video, but there's so much more it's not possible to record in a video.

Extremism is part of Balkan culture. What you need is a strong ideology to keep extremism under the rug. Communism was such an ideology but couldn't stand the test of time and the passing of Tito. I don't believe that Europe and democracy can be that new ideology, but at least it keeps extremism in the freezer for a while.
This is war is pretty important to understand so I’m glad you are telling an about it. Politicians dividing peoples is always the problem.

É muito triste lembrar, o meu primo esteve para ir a guerra na Bósnia em 92 ,os Portugueses como missão de paz,o meu primo era sargento do exército,cruz vermelha,etc... e a minha tia conseguiu que ele desistisse da ideia e ele foi para os bombeiros.
Foi horrível,um desperdício de vidas humanas por um capricho de alguns fulanos que se acham no direito de destruir o que quiserem e lhes apetecer, como crianças mimadas a jogar á batalha naval.

It is always painful to look upon the ravages that war inflicts where once was peace, and the coming together of many different peoples in the spirit of friendly sporting competitions. It is not the people who gather to honour their fallen loved ones, it is the politicians, who do not bear the weight of their actions and decisions of the past that brought so much heartache and destruction to people with deep roots in this country and its past.
You always show with honesty the hard memories as well as the beauty when you visit these places, touched so deeply by the barbarity man is so often willing to perpetrate upon each other for ideas that are frequently not their own. When the Olympics were revived after WWII, it was with a hope that peace and sports could bring us all together, with a vision that mankind was not meant for fighting and killing.
I still believe that we have more in common than we have differences. We all want and need the same things, food and water, shelter, love and kindness. We need safe places to raise children, and educate them, places and times where we can come together and talk, to discover the humanity we all share when the greedy do not hold tightly all those things we need in common.
Just at the close of the battles musician friends of mine drove a truck, on which the musicians played and performed their music for war weary peoples. They toured all the cities and settlements that had been war torn, bringing an international message if peace, love, and healing. They carried no military equipment or guns…only their musical instruments, and voices of many languages carrying the same message of hope.
My friends were profoundly changed and moved by the greetings they received everywhere they went, and the grateful welcomes they received from all. You have captured both the beauty and promise of these places…and their people, with honesty and appreciation. Turning your cinematic abilities and haunting music on these proud and resilient peoples, and their magnificent counterside. Knowing it will take years to remove the mines that still have the power to cripple and kill the unwary.
War leaves a stain wherever it has been, that the passage of time alone cannot eradicate. Only acceptance and understanding can do that, as people work together to build a new and better life where such atrocities have been committed. The work you do toward that end is powerful, and truthful. Making not judgements, but room for change to the better.
The Olympic sites that held such beauty and idealism are so sadly broken, and left as mute testimony of man’s inhumanity to man. Divided, not by species, but by religious and political differences, used to drive wedges between peoples who could have so much more by celebrating our similarities and working together instead of being set against each other by political propaganda that blames the “other” for the problems all must face.
This was both beautiful, as only you can make it…and sad beyond words for the orphaned children, and wounds to the hearts and souls of those who have lost so much in a war that brought them so much suffering for so little reward. I hope you enter some of your work in Cannes, and Sundance where so many will see the amazing work you do, for the future, and wildlife habitats, as well as to give voices and faces to the statistics of war…giving them a more truthful context.
You are doing important work that will have a profound impact long after all the participants are gone, and their stories forgotten. Thank you for not turning away from what must be remembered. You are a bridge between the past and the future…showing us what is now, and important. I write this, having been a Widow of two weeks, but knowing what you do is important beyond my meagre words, and my heartfelt gratitude.🖤🇨🇦

Hey, thanks a lot! Yes, we have more footage but for better storytelling, we decided to throw out a bunch of video clips. Editing these kind of videos takes endless hours on the computer and we're only two poeple - usually, a big team is working on documentaries like that. Unfortunately, we have limited funds and can't effort to edit longer and more videos.
Better to have quality than quantity in my opinion. And for creators who do it all themselves this is a big task to produce such quality work.

I was there in the winter of 95. God it was so harsh, and the brutalist architecture just echoed it.
Human kind can sure make a mess of things. This was also a beautiful landscape and now littered with forever concrete for a very brief moment in time for 84 Olympics. This should have been restored to its natural beauty.

Nice but brutal, like watching the story of two brothers (the east and west) who fight constantly but have regrets and make up for a very brief moment (the olympics) and then go back to fighting and destroy the house 😢
The hotel looked like a concrete sculpture. It looks more like 80 years old, aged like the pill boxes of Normandy Beach.
It is an incredible design and looking at the photos of how it was - the architects and builders would be devastated to see what happened to their creation.
I remembered this very well, I was a young mother living in America. Heartbreaking how official we can be with other humans

In February this year it was the 40th anniversary of the Sarajevo winter olympiade. One observation is that when I recently flew across BiH in early March this year, even the highest peaks didn’t have any snow on them. But your feature is not focussed in climate change but on the horrors that occurred here when Sarajevo was under siege for nearly three years (whilst the west once again a did what it does best and “twiddled their thumbs”). Whereas I have not yet been to Sarajevo, several friends of mine who were born and raised there say that everything they knew has changed. I need to tell you guys how the place is full of ghosts. Thanks again for a truly in depth analysis. ZZ
Why did the West need to do anything? It was a civil war which should have been resolved once and for all. However, the west did stop the war, but unfortunatly not to the satisfaction of either side or entity if you will and as such there is an underlying tension in all the entities as I am sure you know. I spent a lot of time in Bosnia, Sarajevo as a soldier and then later as a civilian in other places. Yes, Sarajevo has changed and not for the better unfortunatly. A large number of people living in Sarajevo were not there during the war, but they have a victimhood and entitlement of someone who thinks they suffered there during the war.
Sarajevo was not under siege, the Muslims were murdering their Christian Serb neighbors who lived all around Sarajevo. It’s been 30 years, everyone has seen documentaries and read Canadian UN soldiers top secret information which shows what really happened, google it and stop lying to everyone. We do not won’t to live in sharia law it you Muslim do, do it in the part of Bosnia and Hercegovina you murdered everyone who is not Muslim, leave us alone ffs.

The so called "Siege of Sarajevo" is an utter nonsense made up by western propaganda and repeated afterwards by the Muslims because they simply can't accept military defeat and want media victory.
Before the war Sarajevo had 33% Serbs and 45% Muslims and since 1992 until the end of the war in 1995 there were Serb-held half of the city and the Muslim-held one.
The Dayton peace agreement gave the Serbian half of the city to the Muslims and all 130.000 Sarajevo Serbs abandoned their homes and settled in various parts of Republika Srpska rather than remaining under the Muslim-Croat administration.
The fact that 130.000 Serbs left all they had just so they could live in Serbian half of Bosnia tells you how pointless the current Bosnian state is. Keeping the 3 ethnic groups that brutally fought each other in the same country is sadism. The Muslims want the Serbian half for themselves and that's why they insist on common state instead of simply limiting their appetites to what they have.

Here in the west the Yugoslav war is half a story told. The events leading up to the conflict go back to the fall of the SU wich made a strong bufferzone between east and west obsolete to the powers that should not be. The ethnic unrest was carefully planed and carried out in an event widely known as a color revolution we have seen more recently in many other places, some succeeded others have not. Arabic spring, Georgia, Belarus, Chechnia and the wests most recent succes Ukraine where V. Nuland shamelessly handed out cookies on Maidan Square bragging about her succes.
The nature is stunning as well as the city. The structures are heartbreaking knowing what happened to the people.
It's way more than just empty shells. Those places are filled with history
