I was born and raised in Castlebar , Co. Mayo. A beautiful, peaceful town. Mayo's past History was undeniably sad, tragic, inhumane, yes- my Ancestors suffered, but- through Faith they survived. My Grandfather Peter Hegarty , was shot in Boofeenaun in 1921, by the English, captured and imprisoned for his playing his part in the Patriot Freedom of Ireland. R.I.P. Go ráibh mháith agat CR'S , Agus céad Béannachtaí . Méas. 🙏🇮🇪🙏

Castlebar native here. Unfortunately the town has never fully recovered economically from the 2008-9 crash. For instance, the hotel that the interviewee makes reference to was the site of the establishment of the Land League, just 40 metres or so from where they are sitting in the Mall. It’s been closed for the last decade or so, lying derelict. The Co.Council purchased it but can’t find a buyer.
A lot of the local businesses went under during the recession and have not been replaced, hence a lot of boarded up lots, particularly in the Main Street. Unfortunately, one of the main businessmen in the town died of illness shortly after the recession, while others were Nama’d. Thus the business class in the town largely got wiped out.
That said, it’s still a good town for shopping, and John McHale’s will do the best Guinness you’ll ever have. On game day when Mayo are playing in MacHale Park, the place will be hopping. But the closure of the local nightclubs has meant that most people go to Westport now at the weekends.
Like a lot of places in rural Ireland, it needs a bit of help. Having the Taoiseach of six years from the constituency did very, very little for the town.

The main street seemed to be vibrant back then compared to now for sure.

This was very interesting and educational, I always ben told that the people of the west of Ireland were a very special lot, someday when my hard work is done, when I am released and shake those rusty old changes around my ankles, I will set sail for the wet coast of Ireland and I will enjoy me time there

Good Morning James, yes- if u ever decide to come West of the river Shannon, into the province of Connaught you'll never regret your journey . I can speak for my home country of Mayo, underated beautiful JEM. It's beautiful. Seeped in History -- tragic though. Landscape next to none from Croagh Patrick, over yonder to Achill Island, I could go on and on. Green and Lucious . Let your next destination be CO. MAYO.. Diá dháoibh agus Méas. 🙏🇮🇪🙏

Nothing about the 10,000+ years of human history in Castlebar, Mayo and Ireland before 1798?

Castlebar was only settled in the 13th century, to be fair. If you’re interested in what happened prior to 1798 then the Mayo Historical Society could probably help you.

It’s Preab San Ól by the Mayo poet poet Riocárd Bairéad. The Dubliners do a musical version of it that’s on RUclips.
