HOW TO TRAVEL MAYO | Exploring Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 11 июн 2024
- In this video, we explore what we believe is one of the most underrated counties in Ireland and take you on a journey along Mayo's Wild Atlantic Coast. We visit some well-known locations such as Downpatrick Head and Achill Island but also get 'off the beaten path' by doing some camping and hiking along the spectacular rugged coastline.

As someone who lives in Mayo for over 30yrs i can tell you its stunning.... also great trout fishing.....
We love it! 🟢🔴
'Go west as far as you can' solid advice!
You know it! 😁
Don't make Ireland sound too nice, everyone will want to go there.
🤣☘️💚
Best comment so far 😂😂😂.
Yes…. What are you doing??? This is our beautiful country and we don’t want it trampled and destroyed by the masses. I’d appreciate it if you wud take it down!
No tourists but planters welcome !!
Wich is good
Spent a weekend in Achill in June. Glorious Sun. We drove our camper which is great but way slower than a car. 6 hours drive but worth it all. Keen and Keem beaches were beautiful but as we traveled the island the scenery just got better and better. Came home through Westport on by Croagh Patrick then on to Doo-lough valley. The most beautiful place with a very sad ( famine ) story. An Gorta Mor. I hate calling it a famine. / then on to Ashleigh Falls, water was very low at the falls. Had food in Leenane ( where the film , the Field was set ) I love it there. On to Galway Usually stop at Cong ( where the Quiet Man was filmed ) and drive around lough Mask and head back by lough Corib but so much driving ahead we came direct home. Next two trips were to Kerry , Dingle , stayed at Dunmore Head on the Slea Head drive on Dingle Peninsula . Don't miss the Conor Pass if weather is good. All right, Safe Driving and enjoy ~Sean
Sounds unreal! 😍 Thanks for the comment, enjoyed reading about your trip!
Kink Charles and Queen Camilla also love Doolough. They have been regular visitors to the Lodge for years. A place made infamous
during the Gorta Mór.
Excellent video. Too many people visiting Ireland trying to pack too much into their short stay . They miss so much by just trying to visit the main attractions . I am too old for tents ,my way on each visit , I've been over in excess of twenty times ,
is to rent a cottage and use it as my base . My main area is around Doolin and do car trips out every day and exploring as you have off the beaten tracks and then into the pubs in the night for music ,people and the pints . It is all about slowing down when you are there to take your time on the many empty beaches .
Great comment! We completely agree ☺️
This is where my dads father was born and immigrated from in the 40s I will make it there one day hopefully with my dad. My dad was born and raised in Baja California another coast line, crazy how things can play out.
I’d say you’ll see some slight differences between the Mayo coast & the Californian coast 😅 Hope you make it over some day!
I'm Irish from Dublin Irish culture is unique but still amazing lots of wee little waterfall and big ones that are beautiful and many more beautiful things ❤️🇮🇪
So many beautiful places in Ireland 🙌🔥
Now I want to go to Mayo, as well as all Ireland. I’ve never know about WAW, now it’s blown my mind too
Go for it! ☺️☘️🇮🇪
Calling Mayo, Irelands most under rated county is a bold claim. We're a proud bunch altogether.
Underrated was meant as a compliment, we love Mayo! 🥰
The Barry keoghan impression was actually pretty good 😂 enjoyed the vid 👍
Appreciate it 😅
Home ❤️💚 Unreal Video Asya & Mark🔥 looking forward to your next one! 😁
💚 Cheers!
If Shannon Airport is an option from where ever you are coming from into Ireland, I'd take that option over Dublin Airport. Dublin Airport is a nightmare, from delays, to cancellations and just packed with people so tightly, long queues for security that move very slowly and a lot of baggage lost.
Shannon is pure chill usually.
Knock Airport is also a good alternative! Thanks for commenting ☺️
Knock is especialy great if you want to start in Mayo. I remember when the priest had a dream and started prparing the land befor the development was even oked by council. HA. Showing my age. We were so excited because it is only 30 min to Grans house. Back in the day long before you were even a thought, the roads were not what they are now. We had a 5hr drive from St. Louis to Chicago to catch a direct flt to Ireland. Either Shannon or Dublin. Then the 8 hr flt. to either. Then the four of us would load into my Uncles car with him. Sometimes he would bring one of my younger cousins for company during their 5hr car ride to the airport. We would cram (3 adults, 3kids and a bunch of lugage) into what was usually a older Hunter something or a Cortina. Mind you we were staying for the whole summer. Uncle Martin always brought enough rope. Lugage for 4 people for a six week stay. It was in the boot, and on top of the roof all roped down with the rope going through the windows. We took many clothes due to Gran not haveing washer/dryer or even plumbing. So then another 5hr drive up to Mayo. I was the smallest so I would always be in the front with my Dad and Uncle. Sitting a little on both seats and stradling the gear shift. We would load up the laundry drive into Ballina to the laundry mat. We would always get stares because it was usually a long process and stealing a machine as offten as we could when a person was finished and also trying to be polite to the other people doing laundry. My Sister and I would be yanking out the somewhat dry clothes to make room for more wet ones so all the machines werent taken. To say the least we would get not so friendly looks. @@SomethingToRemember
Great video. My Grandad was from Foxford in Mayo. Visited Westport myself almost a decade ago. Lovely Guinness. Keep up the good work guys. Best suitcase advertisement I have seen.
Great to hear! Thanks ☺️
Thoroughly enjoy your videos, my Mom’s family is Irish and Scottish.
Ah County Mayo, the final frontier for me. I have to get back there and explore. You've given me some great ideas too, nice video guys.
Amazing place! Thanks a lot 💚
Love that you provide so many fun-facts in the video like the WAW and the EIRE signs purpose for ww2, didn't know either since living here 17 years! Achill is my favourite spot in Ireland.
Thanks so much, glad you are enjoying and learning something from our videos ☺️💚 We absolutely loved Achill too as you can see! Take care ☘️
Maigh Eo is the greatest place, it’s where my mothers from. There is so much to see and do. I’ve been going to Westport since I was a small boy and it’s always brilliant.
Loved it too! ☺️
Love it guys, looks amazing 🙌☘️
Thanks Kevin! 💚
Family history brings me back to Mayo. Interesting
Hope you enjoyed it ☺️💚
Great video guys!
Cheers Benny! 💪🏻☘️
I also was unaware of WAW and Ive been going there since 1972, My Mom was born in Mayo.
Thank you, I don’t feel as bad now 😅☘️
Great video, just back from a similar Mayo trip in July. Look forward to your Kerry video
Glad to hear it! Thanks 😊
Aroha! From NZ- I spent a lot of my childhood in Ballycastle- playing on those cliffs.
Thankyou soooo much!!!
You’re welcome! Thanks for your comment 💚☘️
Because the U Boat war was starving both Ireland and The UK, Dev and Churchill had an agreement of overflight rights to extend the reach of anti sub Bombers. Each Éire marker has a number. They were channel markers for the RAF to make efficient overflights to extend the patrol range by allowing easy navigation to RAF bases in the North. Lovely video. Tír Chonnaill Abu!
Interesting! Thanks for sharing 😊☘️
Great job guys🌏❤💚
Cheers Darren! ☺️
Must get back sometime. G-G-Grandmother was born in in Castlebar..... left 1849... as so many Mayo people did... more a case of had to
If you make your way to Clare, definitely go to the Bridges of Ross. My favourite place in the country. Absolutely wild and you can get right up to the ocean
Thank you for your recommendations☺️
Doolough is one of my favourite places in the world. A beautifully scenic lake with a tragic past.
Another great video, keep up the great work 😊
Thank you! 💪🏻💚
Wonderful video!
Thanks☺️🙌🏻
Great video guys. I've a wedding in Mayo later this year so I'll definitely be adding some of your suggestions to the itinerary.
Also, great Barry Keoghan impression Mark! 😅
I thought I nailed the high-pitched southern accent myself 🤣 Cheers Conal!
as an American tourist I've been to Ireland a few times... Ulster, Dublin, Cork, Wexford. Never been to Mayo though... apparently it's where my ancestors came from. Connacht, Achill island.
Hi! Thanks for sharing 😊 It would be nice for you to see Achill Island some day then, I hope you can make it happen! ☘️💚
We hope we did the beautiful county of Mayo justice in this video, it really is spectacular! Where else should we visit along the Wild Atlantic Way? ☺️💚🇮🇪
hello what's up bro ❤🇦🇪🇦🇪
👋💪🏻
Nice video. As a Mayo man, I would recommend the Quay area of Westport, beside Westport house, which has some lovely restaurants and a nice view over Clew Bay.
Over in neighbouring Castlebar, John McHale’s pub does the best pint of Guinness I ever did taste, as well as being home to Lord Lucan’s ancestral estate and the excellent National Museum of Country Life.
Ballina’s ridge pool is also home to some of the best salmon fishing one can get, as was attested to by the late Jack Charlton.
I believe that Inishturk and Clare Island are also ramping up their tourist potential these days, with more ferry crossings and accommodation available during the summer months.
If you’re flush, Cong in South Mayo offers the site of John Wayne’s The Quiet Man film, as well as the beautiful Ashford Castle luxury hotel.
@TheLastAngryMan01
Fantastic! We hope people that enjoyed the video also read your comments & make a note of your recommendations … It’s difficult to make a video about a location like Mayo without missing out on so many other interesting places. Comments like these really help 👍🏻 Take care! ☘️
Mayo is where I live and I love it it’s just sometimes hard too play soccer but I love Ireland and Mayo
We love it too! 🥰
Great!
Amazing to see Rinroe beach and Ceathru Thaidgh , many a summer spent there as the mother was born there and still have family there, sure at 6:09 you can see the house on the hill in the background. Most beautiful spot. I hope ye popped into Garvins before yous left 👍
Missed Garvins… Next time 😅 Thanks for your comment!
Mayo my Favourate place !
Love it😍
Ye are true adventurers! So delighted you didnt go to the usual towns besides Westport. Delighted you went to Belmullet. Cant believe ye visited Portacloy and Rinroe beaches (spent many a summer's day there). Our secret spots are out now 😂Love all your videos. Subscribed.
Ah thanks for your lovely comment! Great to hear, take care 💚😊
Great educational material. Your going to have to do Co Armagh
Thank you! The Orchard county is on our list 😊
I just realized that too about the WAW sign. I thought it was just squiggly lines for waves lol
Glad I’m not alone 🤣
Did you also notice that the WAW signs cater for the direction in which you're travelling. If travelling south on the Wild Atlantic Way, the signs say WAW (S). If travelling north, the signs say WAW (N).
Indeed we did! Thanks 🙌😊
Up Mayo 🇮🇪👍🏻
😅💚❤️
I like how you got the Saw Doctors referneces in there! Green and Red of Mayo!!! Did you go to Mulranny beach? Nevins restuarant?
Tried to get in as many as we could 😅 Drove through Mallaranny & had a look down at the beach, looked lovely! Thanks for commenting ☺️
nice ❤❤❤❤
Thanks 💚
Excellent work ....
Road trip to Achil island In Ireland?
Thank you! Yes, we loved Achill ☺️
Hi kid just watched your latest video, well done.
Just a wee question, heard you call the rain “pissy”, never heard a Donegal man call it that before. Anyway Barr that your doing well keep er lit.
I’m actually not sure if Donegal people say pissy, I’ve a lot of mates from down the country so I might have picked that one up over the years 🤣☘️
4:00 12:39 nice work
😉🟢🔴
I thought you'd give the Reek a bit more airtime, the annual pilgrimage etc...
I'm a Dub living on the eadt side of Mayo for the last 17 years and I love it here... but the weather is SOO different from the Capitals weather... more "atmospheric" I would say.. 😆
Enjoying your vids, guys...sub & a like ! 😉
😎👍☘🍺
(Why is there no Guinness emoji ?🙄🤨)
We plan on going back to do that hike 😊
Cheers, we need to start a petition for a Guinness emoji 😅🍺
For years, I have advised people going to Ireland who are new to the country to stick to Clare and Kerry. There is so much to see there and with Galway and the airport nearby, it’s a win/win. However, my father is from Mayo and having just come back from there, I have to agree that there is sooo much to see in Mayo but I am very familiar with the county and definitely biased. Up Mayo!
Yeah, and the likes of Kerry & Clare are quite touristy nowadays… We much rather a more “off the beaten path” location! Thanks for commenting ☺️
shes a keeper lad she loves her cans 😀
Lovesss the cans 🤣
Excellent guy’s…..very lovely scenery can’t wait to visit in October. 🍀🍀💪💪👍
Cheers! Enjoy your trip☺️
Up mayo
💚❤️
Gobbins Path near Larne,Co Antrim is definitely worth a visit. Mamore gap in Inishowen. I think you should have spent more time showing your beautiful native county to it's full potential.
Its
To be honest, we weren’t as experience making videos back when we made the Donegal one… We agree that it could be better 👍🏻
Hey donegal how about the donegal slang wild.
Wild handlin’ trying to explain that one 😁
You cannot miss the Giants Causeway or the Titanic museum in Belfast
Love the Giants Causeway… Actually never been to the Titanic museum 🤔 Will give it a go when we are in Belfast!
Glenagivney bay nice spot . Look up TikTok . Be careful and height dangerous
Cheers for the recommendation! ☺️
I'm surprised that in exploring Irish culture, no mention is made of the church and it's influence in shaping both culture and landscape.
There is no doubt about that… However, if you talk about religion or politics on RUclips you just get loads of people hurling abuse at each other in the comments and we’d rather avoid that on our channel 😅 Thanks for your comment!
Better still flight into knock Airport and avoid Dublin completely
Definitely, if it’s an option! 😅
Mayo is not the most underrated county in ireland, well not by the irish ,every irish man who has held a fishing boat to be in a rod ,has fished in mayo ,,or os going this year to visit mayo is to become , spiritually a mayoman... i am not capable of explaining ,but just look at the number of german, french europeans really who visit every year or own a summer home there... m
Our point is that Mayo never makes to the top 5 counties in Ireland. We think it's one of the best counties to visit here but it's never recognised this way:)
Disappointed the English influence and troubles and blow ins not mentioned
We are a travel & adventure channel. If you want to talk politics, go somewhere else 🙂
@@SomethingToRemember realise that now having watched a few videos.
Problem with Mayo, is that it's full of Mayo people!
Ah that’s not nice 🤭
I can't understand the Mexican girl.
Is a rugged county started out too rural for me clicked to another video , next video should start in westport when thers life in the place can't watch more cliffs
Our channel is definitely not for you then 😅
5:21 well thank god its not on the cliff tops knowing you two so far. i think i've watched 4 videos now and 4 times dangling off the edge of a high drop... youll need crash helmets you two..lol
🤣 Don’t worry about us haha, we’re not as reckless as you make us out to be 😊🙌
why is the donegal accent so different from Sligo.. Yours is like the counties to the east
Thanks for commenting on our videos! Merry Christmas 😊🎄
@@SomethingToRemember Merry Christmas to you both.. Keep up the great work and just to say, the videos are really professional looking, well done.
anyone visiting the cliffs, do not risk your lives by sitting on the edge.
Indeed!
2:07 You two are gonna give me a heart attack.. Her dad is gonna give you a thick ear.. sitting on cliff edges is a common theme i am noticing.. Please look after yourself.. A nice clip of you sitting on a ledge is not worth risking your lives for... Has your mammy watch these.. She be getting the wooden spoon back out for you boy...
No cliff-edge seating here, just cinematic magic! ✨ Keeping it safe and sound😉
@@SomethingToRemember I'm 45 now and been with the wife since i was 17 and we travelled the world as you are doing now. I was doing the same shit back then, sitting on cliff edges, doing the most unorthodox things and seeing you two doing that, sent me back thinking about the stupid thing we done and got away without any harm, so here i am, now whinging like an old man when i wouldn't of listened to anyone back then.. be safe guys out there and have a great time.. Don't have kids until you buy a house either..
