- Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special vs KTM 1290 Super Adventure S
2021 brings with it one of the most talked-about adventure bikes the motorcycle industry has ever
seen. Mostly the chatter between fans on social media was about the styling of the Pan America
1250, the rest of us were more interested in how seriously Harley-Davidson were taking the project.
Indeed, after sitting down with some of Harley-Davidson UK’s key staff, it was very clear that Harley-
Davidson had the top of the market clearly in their sights, meaning bike’s like the KTM 1290 Super
Adventure S were about to gain a rival.
Having just ridden both the 1290 Super Adventure S and the Pan America 1250 on UK roads already
this year, we thought it was the perfect time to sit down and mull over which is the best for
scratching on a B-road, blasting to the south of France, or tackling the toughest of trials.
Before we get into the video though, please do take a minute to like this video and subscribe to the

the future.

Have to say it’s the first Harley I would contemplate buying. Maybe. Good article thanks.
Thanks!
I put money down on the PanAm when it was announced, but in the end I bought the 1290S. I don't think you can go wrong with either.
KTM has been at this game for how long now? The fact that Harley Davidson came anywhere close on their first attempt is incredibly impressive. I hope Harley stays in the game long enough to keep refining their machines as much as their competitors have.
I just bought the Harley last week! Awaiting it's arrival... I also own a 2020 Triumph Tiger 1200 XCX with all the options. Both bikes will compliment each other well! I bought the charcoal and black Harley BTW. Badass! Wish my Harley had a quick shifter like my Triumph though... The Reality is, the reason I bought the Harley is the adaptive ride height below 5mph. It drops up to 4.5 inches so you can get your feet secure off road. No other bike in the world does this! I have ridden dirt and motocross for close to 50 years now and this feature is a real lifesaver with a big bike on sketchy terrain!
I'm not a massive Harley fan but I have been hoping the Pan America would receive some praise. You've given such a fair review here, and I like that. Nice little video 👍
Visordown, you guys nail the brief between entertaining and informative. Hands down the best reviewers. I only wish the reviews were longer...maybe that's the secret to your top notch work, keeping it short and sweet!
Now to purchase one of these!
Good to finally see a comparison between these two bikes. I considered the Harley but it took them too long to get some demo bikes to Spain. I took a ride on the KTM and that was it. I've had mine for a couple months now. But I can see it having gone the other way.
Well done sir!
What is the background racket for?
In my experience, this review is backwards. I think the KTM wins for best on road and long distance. The KTM has more room so it’s more comfortable long distance more gizmos and better protection from the wind than the Pan America. The seat in the Super Adventure sucks big time. In the twisties and off road the Harley wins for me. The KTM feels huge compared the Pan America riding trails. Both feel about as fast as my GSXR600.
I currently own a HD and a KTM both albeit they are both completely different bikes with completely different capabilities and neither are adventure bikes, the HD never has a problem but my KTM constantly breaks down and I’ll never buy another KTM. I finally got the opportunity to ride the new Pan America recently and I absolutely loved it and since I primarily ride on the street it’s a no brainer for me, I’ll buy the Pan America as soon as I get my Street Glide paid off.
My line of thinking is, based on a potentially eager to please dealership, the Pan America might nudge out the 1290S. In my case, HD just closed the local dealership . . . so much for that line of thinking.
I love the adaptive ride height - a solution looking for a problem. Sure, it is a short guy magnet. But what a gizmo to add to a bike -. As for the review, I agree with a former commentor - I think you got this backwards. The SAS is not that awesome off road - but it is awesome on road. Whereas, I felt the HD was actually “ok” off road - which is to say, better than the KTM.
I'd buy the harley because of the dealer network
Yea and you're gonna need to use it.
yep
@@roybatty-ROFL so true
Like to see a comparison of the Pan America, Ducati Desert X and BMW 1250GS Adventure
To see HD's first real shot over the bow cause concern for KTM is a great surprise. Wonder if the gas mileage on the HD would make up for a smallish tank, and - more importantly - if they are that close, which will be the most reliable and fuss-free? That's what's going to land with real owners.
I'm averaging 43.4mpg over 1200 miles on my base model Pan America if that helps you any.
Harley did a fantastic job for attempt #1 hats off!
Im ready for the Hypernaked shootout!
I really don’t care about the comparison. Both bikes are top notch, high technology and modern motorcycles. As long as they both start and stop their good. Most people are not going to use 50% of the options on these bikes, more skilled riders are the most critical as always.
which one is more comfotable. ktm ,gs, mts v4s?
Tiger 1200
KTm absolute
From all reviews I've watched and read the GS seems to win on comfort, I still can't choose between GSA & Adventure R though...
It doesn’t matter how good it is if people don’t buy it. I was very tempted but in the end went for a ktm.
So one of these two it's just a big Supermoto with off-road and around the world capabilities? That's enough for me..
Despite my predictions to the contrary I have yet to hear a negative review of the Pan American.
That’s because the bar is set so low being it’s a Harley that anything better than what an actual Harley is is a positive review. If KTM, BMW, Triumph or Ducati put that bike out people would not be happy. Excluding the motor.
@@Captndarty It's a first effort though isn't it? KTM, BMW, Triumph and Ducati have been building adventure bikes for many years. The Harley appears to be a very good bike judging by how well it is reviewing, which is quite amazing work for a first iteration of a new model from a company that has been making cruisers for decades.
@@Teatimeted Let's see how the Harley holds up after a few years of real world riding. Test rides are one thing, longevity another.
Harley has deep pockets, a long memory, and a highly developed marketing machine. Duh.
Harley is most unique minimalistic look and somehow really Harley. For first time Harley did a good job! “ don’t forget Harley started with cross/cafe racer style bikes. I also hope they make a super cross bike like Triumph and Ducati also do. KTM is an Amazing Austrian bike company what helped Gasgas and Husqvarna being a life again. Like the brand but not in love with the looks. I think you can’t get wrong with both of the brands also look into BMW, triumph and definitely Yamaha.
HD seem to have a track record of bringing out good bikes then scrapping them few yrs later like v-rod, xr1200, Buell so whilst this maybe a decent bike for HD i wouldn't be surprised if this is a "one off" and the fact there is a massive unknown about servicing, reliability, availability parts etc the bike just hasn't been out long enough and a half day journo test ride doesn't really mean anything.
Bingo.
If HD does cancel this bike after a few years and not build on it, than they deserve to go bankrupt
They scrap them because no one buys them.
The dealer network alone will seal the deal in the US. KTM is is fantastic ride but dealers are few and far between.
Ducati Multistrada V4, KTM 1290 ADV-R, and HD Pan-American. V shootout!
HD vs BMW please
I bought the Harley over the KTM due to the service network and customer service. I agree the KTM has the performance but can't overlook the dealer network. If I went adventure riding to central and south America it will be a honda or KLR600 due to the service network you can find on the road.
Took me a sec - I was trying to figure out how a suspension option could weigh 700 pounds. :-)
Africa twin vs it..?
Sounded more like a Harley advertisement than a comparison.
Anybody knows what the music is at the beginning ?
You didn’t get into the horsepower and torque. Why not?
...or adjust ur fuel stops accordingly
Honda Africa Twin ,then KTM.
Harley wins.
'This video was sponsored by Harley Davidson' LOL
When you depend on good relationship with the manufactures. Sad that no one really dares to critizes bikes.
That is an issue with KTM in the states, actually most European makes simply don’t have the dealership presence that Harley maintains.
I’m over 100 miles from anything European, but I’ll ride past two different HD shops before I get to the bmw shop. Ktm has a shop about 95 miles from me and I really don’t live in a tiny metropolitan area.
Let’s see, the choice is between a company that has decades of experience building large displacement adventure bikes or a company with no experience putting out a product with no proven track record. Gee, that’s a tough one….
Toad likes “softer” bikes…
Ktm Est et reste la reine de la moto 👑 c'est une bombe
ktm rules
Then we recently saw R1300gs in testing nuff said😅
Deep mud, with road tires, on a 600 lb bike. Hahahahaha. Please. So there goes credibility.
The Harley looks better, I'll say that. From someone who is on his second KTM.
Harley versus KTM? Lmao... Come on, seriously. Nuts and bolts versus titanium. Looks like a giant photo copier with wheels.
Is this a joke? How can you compare a US honkey tonk manufacturer that puts out junk vs the premium KTM ? The KTM 1290 SAS all the way and everyday of the week. This is not even close.
Only an ignorant hick has contempt prior to any real investigation. Have fun playing around maintaining that KTM and believing H-D all still just leak oil. They’ve (H-D) have been in this game over a century now and they have more resources than you think . .
@@hoss6048 Bullshit. Harley are subsidized by the US government. 2.3 billion to keep the dinosaur afloat. KTM's are in a different league.
@@piersjohnstone9851 And KTM is not subsidized???.....pffft dummy
