Ulysses was the last new Buell with the HD based engine. Only the later 1190 twins (sportbike and CR) had the outsourced engine. Great review of the Harley. Reaaaaaly impressed with the overall package for a first effort. It doesn't do much good in Europe, but in North America, the act of touring on a Harley is the insane dealer network. You can be hundreds of miles from a spare part for any other brand but you're rarely far from a harley shop and they take care of people who are traveling and have issues. I dont love their bikes but the reasonable price and mid-pack results of the Pan America make it a really compelling package for us in the U.S.

Chris you make Bike World videos compelling. Your authentic style , obvious love of bikes and enthusiasm to share that knowledge with us the unwashed and undeserving lol ...is fantastic. Now if you could just pop around and show me how to do those winter bike improvement tweaks on my ZZR that would be great mate :) Keep up the great work
Excellent review of the Pan America and the 1290SAR…I may have some qualifications to comment in that I own a 2019 1290 SAR and a 2009 Buell Ulysses with tall suspension and yes the Buell has a HD Sportster Engine with many improvements. I ride a mix of dirt and asphalt always on these bikes and often two up. They are of course worlds apart but I always enjoy riding the Uly. I’m looking forward to throwing a leg over the Pan America!
I've owned both. Sold my BMW to buy the Pan Am and have not been disappointed. BMW has some annoying traits that you did not hit on which have plagued the bike for years. Overall though, I thought your review was well done. The Pan Am is not perfect but neither was the BMW. I'm at 7500 miles now with zero issues. Overall what has impressed me most about the Pan Am is its ability to chew up miles without effort. What impressed me the least about the Pan Am and something Harley really needs to address is the size and placement of the rear tail light. Small and hard to see with full bags on the bike. Borderline dangerous. I rigged aftermarket LED's on my tail box to help with that. Otherwise, good scoot. 14 Reply
Fantastic review. I bought a 2022 special and love it. It does just what I want it to do. I don't mind getting it dirty on dirt roads and I can go over 300 miles in a day and still get off it and walk to the bar.
Incredible riding skills for sure and great review. I was told that sound are the valves lining up and then it fires right up. I’ve had mine a week and love it.
In my humble opinion, Chris and his crew at Bike World produce THE best motorcycle reviews, period. There are some other reviewers that I watch, but I always wait for Chris to give his impressions of a bike. Well done guys, you certainly set the benchmark for others to attain. Will test ride the new PA this coming week, and I really hope that it will be a Harley-Vstrom plus. Love my current Vee, but after having it for 7 years, it's time for an upgrade. BMW, KTM, Ducati or Harley. Nice to have another option available. Thanks again Chris for displaying your riding skills that make me feel like an absolute beginner rider!! LOL. G'day from Australia mate.
Love the honesty and the passion you brought to this review. At my age and health I’ll doubtfully ever straddle a ADV bike. I’m a Harley rider so if I said I wasn’t biased I’d be lying but I appreciate honesty even if it hurts. If Harley is smart they will listen to folks like you a go back and make the necessary changes. Great review!
This was great!! I'd never really given up on Harley's. They are still an American treasure, one I'd like to own one day. But I've had to put it on the back burner for now over affordability and cost of maintenance issues. Maybe this model isn't too much different then the others but from what I'd witnessed in this video, it seems promising for me in the not too distant future.
I am glad to see HD doing something different. It looks good, sounds good, and I hope it gets some people looking at the brand. The more good options to choose from, the better for us buyers. Thanks for reviewing it so thoroughly!
My 2006 Buell Ulysses has a HD 1200 sportster engine in it. I found out the hard way it’s not great for off road with that small front wheel. Nothing more than a gravel road on it now. It’s great for the long hauls though. So glad I got the luggage bags as an option.
I haven't ridden a PA on dirt, but I got to take one thru the twisties. I want a Pan America. I did feel heat on my right leg, nothing uncomfortable, but that doesn't keep me from wanting one.
It's too big it's too heavy it's too expensive it's too delicate see what happens when you drop your 600-pound adventure bike does it come with a flare gun so the rescue party can know where you are when they come get you this is just a new kind of Harley poser it's one thing to ride a bike for one day for free for a video it's something else to use it day in and day out and the people who do they don't like it which is why so many of them are for sale already or traded in on a BMW
The chassis is engineered to flex so it acts like a spring, and actually aids with traction of the bike especially on uneven surfaces. From a BMW rider, Harley did a great job with the Pan America, some minor things to iron out but I believe it will be successful!
Love the styling. One of the best looking dual sports out right now. Too bad I'm not in the hunt for one. Oh well just have to stick to my bagger for now.
Great review! Thank you very much! You're a hell of a biker, congratulations! I was worried watching you doing things that never I'll do in my life or that I tried to do, but with different results 😄
I love the review. Small detail: when Chris talks about the 1250 GS it is footage of him riding an 850 GSA. No complaints here. As a 850 GSA owner I love seeing it in action!
We know Dave, only GS footage we had without causing ourselves rights issues. Also, a bit of an internal joke about them looking the same. Not having a stab at the 850 though 😜
HD did enter it decades ago. All their early bikes were off road capable as was the Sportster XLCH. But then they got caught in the chrome and tattoo rut. Hopefully PanAmerica marks a new era for HD.
I'm not interested, but I am impressed with what they've achieved. It bodes well for HD expanding beyond cruisers and therefore managing to survive as a company that sells motorcycles.

The starter issue is related to when a cylinder is stopped right before top dead center. There is too much compression for the starter to turn the motor over in that particular situation. The starter therefore cuts out and once engaged again it will power the piston past that spot and start up.

I pin everything I ride from time to time and appreciate a good motor / suspension. I have a super local dealership. And as I adventure travel with it Harley has dealerships all over. This bike is going to be great fun.
Chris you make Bike World videos compelling. Your authentic style , obvious love of bikes and enthusiasm to share that knowledge with us the unwashed and undeserving lol ...is fantastic. Now if you could just pop around and show me how to do those winter bike improvement tweaks on my ZZR that would be great mate :) Keep up the great work
Love it @ 3:26 when Jay Kay (off of Jamiroquai) spots farmer Ifans on his quad.
Awesome review! Love the jump 😅

Fantastic review. I bought a 2022 special and love it. It does just what I want it to do. I don't mind getting it dirty on dirt roads and I can go over 300 miles in a day and still get off it and walk to the bar.
Glad you're enjoying it Chris.
Incredible riding skills for sure and great review. I was told that sound are the valves lining up and then it fires right up. I’ve had mine a week and love it.
I'd love to see the engineering paper on that one. Also, I've got some cheap waterfront property for sale in Arizona...
First real Harley review on you tube. If I want an honest bike opinion Chris is the way to go.
“Five pairs of underpants - enough for five weeks’ touring” 😂 I always love your reviews and admire your riding skills 👍
Back to front and inside out that's 15 weeks 🤮 😂😂👍🇬🇧
10 weeks, if you turn them inside out 😂
That's a sexy bike, looking forward to what the aftermarket comes up with for it.
Double this guys pay and make more videos with him. Great presenter.
The Buell was equipped with a Harley Engine, its a really great bike fun as they come, better on the road than off road. still got it loving the ride
Bike World does the best motorcycle reviews available. Fantastic video and thanks for sharing!
Just got an extra subscriber, so well put together - ridden hard, explained well and engineering genius
That's a sick looking bike - well done Harley.
This was the best and most honest review of this bike! Thank you!
Thanks
I haven't ridden a PA on dirt, but I got to take one thru the twisties. I want a Pan America. I did feel heat on my right leg, nothing uncomfortable, but that doesn't keep me from wanting one.
This totally looks like a bike Judge Dredd Would ride
Guilty
I was thinking RoboCop.
If he was poor.
@@frenchonion4595 Must be good then.
I wasn't really interested in this bike at all till I saw your review! Great video!
Great unbiased review - really put the bike through its paces
I'm not a fan of harleys or adventure bikes but this yoke floats my boat...
Common Chris, If the peg is all you broke, it must be built like a tank. 😉Side note: Self adjusting hydraulic valves lifters 👌
I liked this review. Especially from someone who can actually ride and knows abitnout these adventure bikes.
Thanks, Mate
Great clip👍🏽
A great rider AND a great presenter. Last review of the Pan America that I saw that was near this caliber was Justin Dawes. Subscribed.
Best review on the Pan-American so far!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
The chassis is engineered to flex so it acts like a spring, and actually aids with traction of the bike especially on uneven surfaces. From a BMW rider, Harley did a great job with the Pan America, some minor things to iron out but I believe it will be successful!
Nice to see something unusual come out of HD since the XLCR. However the Pan America looks like something you can actually use.
I'm not a big fan of the bike, but I love that motor. Here's hoping they make a street fighter...
Great review, nice to see some genuine critical points, instead of the general gushing of praise from what i've seen so far, cheers.
One of the greatest Adventure motorcycle I have ever seen and found good Idea by Harley: Lets go PanAmerica Tour on Harley Panamerica
Awesome review and I love how you work those bikes like we want to see them ridden.
@@BikeWorldTVshow :-) They do look the essentially the same. Happy trails! Thank you for all of your content. Cheers.
Its a fantastic motorcycle. Especially for a first swing at something WAY outside Harley’s comfort zone.
Thank You! Fantastic Honest Review! So Really Want One Even More Now!🐺🇺🇸
These have become my favourite bike review videos. Well done.
Your absolutely correct about low battery voltage causing problems. Tighten terminals and tend battery. Tech tip.
It's like a 2 wheeled camaro. class and sophistication wise.
It's amazing they didn't enter this segment decades ago
HD did enter it decades ago. All their early bikes were off road capable as was the Sportster XLCH. But then they got caught in the chrome and tattoo rut. Hopefully PanAmerica marks a new era for HD.
@@browngreen933 i hated that they changed the ch from a scrambler to a chopper type thing in its last years
I'm not interested, but I am impressed with what they've achieved. It bodes well for HD expanding beyond cruisers and therefore managing to survive as a company that sells motorcycles.
