Hello André, nice informative podcast as usual. As for the HF propagation, we've certainly had a great period over the past two weeks or so.
I was working ham radio in portable on the coast of Brittany, west France with small gear and I had consistent propagation with Australia, New Zealand, the US, sub-saharan Africa as well as a number of South American countries in the early morning and late afternoon / evening especially on the 20m and 15m ham bands. During these contacts, I often heard people commenting about how nice a period we were enjoying. Yes, coastal Brittany is a heaven for radio hams, but a welll above average propagation helped a lot too.
I hope that it will continue, the higher bands around 10m should be getting better and better now too as we enter Autumn.

Thanks for your comment Alain. Conditions have certainly been excellent for the higher frequencies. Many of your really amazing recent catches attest to that! Maybe it will remain like this for the next year or so, during the solar maximum. With occasional blackouts though, as we have become used to over the last few months, whenever there is a big solar storm. There will probably be many more in the months to come. Maybe I'll even get a second chance to see an aurora here! The last one in May was just a bit too far south from Johannesburg.

I was able to add the show to the app I use, Gnome Podcasts on Linux Mint, using the RSS feed. The name appears as "Listen to the world! The SWL DXing news report", so it shows up in the alphabetical podcast list under "L", which surprised me. Would it make more sense to give the name the other way 'round, as "The SWL DXing news report: Listen to the world!"?

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  23 дня назад

Hi Paul, I have changed the name a bit since the first episode. It was too long. Now I simply call it the SWL DXing News Report. You can add the Listen to the World after that, if you like :-) I will have a look at Spotify and adjust the name if necessary, so that it will reflect correctly in your podcasting app.

Hi Andre, watching your DX news report brings back memories of a certain letter which I still have sent to me from Radio Berlin International in Oct 1990.
RBI acknowledges my having tuned in to their last broadcast, I used my Uniden CR 2021 com receiver ( long wire, 144ft antenna) a very capable radio which I still have.
This may seem long winded but I'm sure some viewers would like to see the content of the letter.
    It went as follows:
    Dear Listner,
Thank you very much for your letter. We were pleased that you were among the very many listeners who tuned into our last broadcasts. As you may well know, Radio Berlin International ceased broadcasting as from midnight on 2nd October, 1990 as a result of the unification of the two German states.
We regret very much that we have to terminate our contact over the airwaves and by letter. May we take this opportunity to wish you all the very best of health and happiness in the future.
    Yours sincerely,
    Radio Berlin International.
The letter and envelope were of recycled paper.

Nuts, I forgot to listen to REE at 2200Z today. -- Some time earlier there was a discussion of other languages on Ifrikya FM. I was listening this afternoon around 2100Z and I heard what I believe was French. -- The Nauen report was very interesting. -- Propagation this past weekend was fantastic, just like the "good old days"! I worked stations in Europe, South America, and Asia. -- Finally, good news everyone! The SWL DXing News Report is available on Google Play Music.

Hello. I am listening to Rep of Yemen on 11935 at 1230 UTC and am hearing a jamming signals the resembles a laser gun sound at high speed. Been hearing quite a lot in the mornings here in Florida.

Thanks Anthony. This noise seems to sound slightly different depending on where you are in the world. I hear more of a pulsing noise here in Johannesburg, but on web SDR's in Europe I also hear something like what you describe, kind of like a laser gun indeed.

@@eyadabusharar2457 My problem with this radio is that it seems to be quite noisy on MW. Maybe because it is super sensitive, so it picks up atmospheric and other noise more than other radios, I don't know... I still plan to try it one day far away from the city, when I get the chance again to travel to the countryside. It does have great sound and I think it is a beautiful radio. Works very fell on FM also, I use it sometimes as my radio alarm.

Thank you RAI for bringing us the world's weekly shortwave report! 🙂 In my experience, BBC's transmissions that are directed toward South Asia (mainly India and Sri Lanka) are not necessarily powerful enough to reach Peninsular Malaysia. Ironically I've been able to catch China Radio International's signals that are beamed towards Southern Africa with ease as well as Algeria's Radio Ifriyka FM. 📻😀

Thank you André for the news and for frequencies 😀 it's been a while since I listened to RNZP in the morning/midday, which is when, in the other half of the year, I could hear them very reliably, with good signals, be it on 22m or 25 or 31. And that "other half of the year" is actually approaching, maybe it's already there 😂
Re RTVS changed to STVR: when a right-wing party complains the media (either public or private) aren't "objective enough", what they're really about to is take control of them so they would always speak well, or even be full of praise to them, and always criticize or bash the opposition. We've been through this here in Poland for the past 8 years, so I know what it is like 🥲 In Slovak case, an additional bite is PM Fico is friends with Putler, in fact one of his first official visits was to moZcow. At the same time, obviously, they oppose supporting Ukraine, which is their neighbour! So I won't be surprised if the new STVR's news (or, rather, propaganda) division's work be modeled after naZi ruZZian, or at least pre-Dec 2023 TVP, learning & perfecting all the "best" techniques of "objective journalism" -- read, blatant propaganda 😈
And I hope there's no CME today, I need to finally set up for the MW DX season! 🤣

Hi Arnie, I am hoping to also finally hear RNZ in the morning. On the day when I made this podcast I did a quick check around 8 am my time and I actually did hear something, so I think if I listen an hour or two earlier I might be lucky enough to catch RNZ. Still a rare one for me.
You are right about STVR, it does seem to me that the government wants to control the media in some ways. I know similar things happened to the media in Poland under the previous government. But I suppose with the new government under Tusk media freedom is a priority again?

@@swlistening sure the change in power did bring some respite to the media. Public broadcasters have changed a lot, although on TVP, I think the bosses feed like they have to separate themselves from everything even remotely resembling of the past, so in January they replaced all presenters of their light entertainment morning show XD. I think there may still be some bias in favour of the ruling coalition as well, but OTOH, they have more experts appearing on their news & current affairs programmes, and, most importantly, their coverage no longer divides anybody, no longer treats anybody as an enemy (except ruZZia ofc 🙂). In the meantime, Polish Radio seems to be more committed to impartiality. You're a lot more likely to see a PiS politician invited to a Polish Radio programme than TVP's.
However, the National Radio and Television Council (KRRiT), our media watchdog, is still dominated by PiS nominees, with chairman being a particular devotee to political matters. He fines stations for anything deemed incorrect, and nit-picks about the slightest deviations between the amount of programmes of certain genre declared in their licence and the real ones, based on station's monitoring. It's rather unlikely this board would be replaced anytime soon, because the President can and did save them.
So in short, a mixed result 🤷‍♂
