I had stage 1 done to my td5 here in Cape Town remotely by Alive tuning ,but as soon as it was done ,within few days my manifold developed a slight screeching sound on fast acceleration, so I need it to get a ceramic manifold replacement and whilst doing that decided to upgrade the intercooler for a good measure… I am still very happy with stage 1 to be honest and it is also not my main car ,but the sound and visual improvements on yours might push me in the direction of stage 2 remap . Well done
I think the fact that a remapped TD5 goes so well does make you accelerate at a more "brisk" pace, so fuel consumption is increased for that reason, but driving at the same rate as "normal" does not appear to be much different, mine did fail MOT on emissions, but I am sure that was due to the fact that he left it on tick over for 5 minutes before he tested it, I disconnected the unit and it passed without problem, the biggest cost of this conversion is the dramatic increase in insurance, it must be reported to your insurance company to avoid nullifying your cover, and they will put another £1000 on your premium, but they will even if you fit a snorkel for some strange reason, insurance companies have refused to pay out when they find you have carried out ANY mods! Chris B.
Great video I had a stage 2 remap done by storme tuning last year and i also fitter an overdrive from romerdrive and wow what a differance the overdrive makes to the driving experiance , i can now cruse at 70 with the endgine running at the same revs as it did at 50 , mutch quieter and more MPG. Well worth the investment and no lacking in power after the remap.
Hi Robert thanks for you comment- that interesting to hear I may look in to an overdrive as cruising for me is still a bit uncomfortable at 70 (even though my defender is now happy to do it!)
Great video! Ive got a td5 90 but havent had it remapped yet, something i did which made a huge difference was to change the transfer box high range output gearing to a 1.2 ratio. If you dont tow much it will massively incrase normal driveability and will probably go well with a remap.
Welcome to the performance Defender club. Suspension next? My 110 runs Bilstein B6 Dampers,H&R progressive (1" lower), H&R anti-roll bars. Superpro poly bushes. The anti-roll bars make it corner very flat indeed. Great fun on country roads with this set up. Also nice and stable when at 90+ mph no bounce.
Thanks for the comment Chris- suspension is definitely next on my list- mine is a varying mix of different britpart bits that have seen better days fitted by the previous owner. Flat cornering is what I’m after- Mine rolls about so much at the moment. Would you recommend lowered springs over standard height?
@@thedoctorsgarage For road handling the Bilstiein &. 1” lower H&R springs work a treat. Lower height slightly seems normal with a road bias set up. Fox are also worth a look on dampers as I hear good things. The ARB’s are incredible for flat cornering and carrying speed through bends like you wouldn’t believe a Defender can! I have 18” wheels so my overall height is hardly different to a normal 110 with the slight drop.I’m sure Alive can also advise you. You are also welcome to drive my truck for comparison if you’re down Bucks / Berks way
Had mine mapped on Monday . St 2 from Storm which doesn’t require a new intercooler although I may add one in future I daily mine and I’ve done 240 miles since Monday. Looks like it may do a few less miles than before but then I have been boosting it all week Not a massively obvious change at first but when you really do floor it they come alive and it’s bizarre and as you say quite scary with the handling Nice to overtake on motorway though with all the added torque
I had an Alive Tuning stage 2 on my 2015 2.2. Looking at your vid it looks very similar. Total transformation and it’s not just the BHP the torque is around 450nm. Momentary wheel spin on a dry road going from 2nd to 3rd is without abusing the transmission but looking for a quick get go is a bit of a grin inducer.
Another great video, I have just fitted a serck performance intercooler to my puma I live in Lincoln and Louth is not to far I have been in contact with alive tuning but am unsure about the remap just because of the worry about not being able to insure after having it done plus the extra cost of the premium if any! Can you help me with this at all?
I’m not so sure unfortunately Richard…for me there was no difference to my premium- not sure how much more attractive it makes it to steal - but then again not sure how premiums are calculated
@@thedoctorsgarage interesting that your premium was unaffected. I am considering a Stage 1 Remap and got some quotes and the best a could find added £200 to my Premium !! Another great video BTW. 😎😎😎
Thanks Joe really appreciate it- I actually don’t know- sounds like a good video idea! It feels like about 2 seconds based on how it drove before but I bet it’s more like 20 😂
My Defender 2.4 Puma holds 70 on the motorway alright as standard - I think the extra gear probably helps there. Although, to be honest, I almost always trundle around at 60 anyway. I tow a caravan with mine and the Defender is already loaded up with a load of gear, so the remap could definitely help with that. But I worry about engine longevity, since my plan is to keep this Defender essentially forever.
Give it a couple months when the clutch starts slipping. Go for LOF SMF clutch. Then at the same time change to a discovery 1.2 transfer box ;) . Cruising at 70mph be like sitting at 60mph.
I feel the risk every time I wheel spin from start! I’ve heard LOF is the way to go when the time comes - and that’s good to know about the transfer box - will look in to it
Hi mate, I recommend a disco transfer box, slick shift by syncro gearboxes and a cat delete down pipe, straight through mid pipe but leave the rear one and you will transform the sound, mpg and also feeling through the gearbox
You’re probably completely right Robert but I love my coopers and are pretty new! I do think the next set will be all terrains to make it a little less off road heavy 👌🏻

Thank you Ben- with your new intercooler it would be perfect to go for a stage 2!

I’ve told my insurance and I had to change insurer - fortunately it actually ended up being cheaper in the end!

You’ve done a brilliant job with this one mate it’s a sensational motor

Very interesting video with plenty of food for thought 👍🏻

Another great video 🤙🏼 I’m fitting a performance intercooler in a couple of weeks! Have a stage 1 atm but very tempted to step up.
Thanks appreciate it 🙏🏼🙏🏼Exciting times! It’s a bit ridiculous trying to make my defender go faster but also addictive 😂

Interesting performance increase i did not know the TD5 was capable of but how does a stage one or two affect the reliability of the engine?
I've not heard of any problems but we will see 👍
Such a nice machine … you have got it looking incredible! What is the estimated 0-60 time now ?

Any plans for any more vids Dr ?🤷♂️😁

Love the videos 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 just did a stage 3 on my TD5 and it is really really strong and fun now
I would say from personal experience using it as a daily my fuel consumption has decreased and my tank last slightly longer
👌🏻
Is there a stage 3?
Not sure? Maybe the turbo upgrade is that a stage 3?
Hi, good day
Could you help me tell me which tire number is the one your defender has?
Thank you
Hello they are Cooper STT Pro 265/75R16 with no spacers
Best you get EGT gauge. With a stage 2 you can smash 700+ temps without thinking about it.
Thanks Troy will look in to
It
It’s a land rover/Ferrari!
Lose the tyres and it will go even better, spent years in the army driving these and it doesn’t need those tyres!
