Mother Inlaw's Tongue is another name for the Snake Plant.
Also, these plants do Indeed have nodes that you can see and if you cut the stalks in sections with 2 or 3 nodes you can place them on top of the soil laying sideways and roots will grow down while a New shoot grows from one of the ends. Because of how easy it is to propagate the amount of plants you can get out of just one stalk is Amazing!
These *Are* jungle plants so keeping the humidity and sun exposure from their native environment will serve you very well.
Actually a lot of articles and random places online refer to them with that name! Which is the problem with common names, a lot of plants share similar ones. But cool thing about the nodes! I didn’t know that

Mother-in-laws's tongue is Sansevieria not Dieffenbachia
I’ve actually heard it for both! I first heard it used with the dieffenbachia and was shocked it was used for sansevieria too! Common names can get kinda confusing sometimes

Twisty Sunshine I only realized once I noticed a bunch of people I knew that live in the desert (Arizona & Cali) had killed them! But very low humidity so that’s a plus! Thank you for watching

Fantastic information you really know this plant. I had a couple die, so for me in my house it has to almost dry out. When I have watered before that it has simply dry rotted. Dropped leaf to leaf and died. So mine like to be watered and then almost dry out. The one I currently have is in a well-lit piano room (I moved it) with two windows and looking beautiful and doing well putting out new growth.

I have the same plant as your o’gee one lol. I cute it off a friends, put it directly in soil kept it moist for a month and it rooted, and it won’t stop producing leaves. I love love love it‼️ Also it’s pretty top heavy
Yes! They get super too heavy. My camouflage is about to get the big chop

I have a question. How do you know if you have a diff. Or an agloanema ? Please forgive the spelling !
I always spray my plants twice a year, once in the beginning and once in December. And always when I bring a plant inside Just in case. I two have snake plants and have seen the name Sansevieria for Dieffenbachia I also look my plants over when watering just in case of pests and as soon as I spot them outside it go's and it get's spray, another way is using vinegar (white) and water, wipe the leaves down to remove pest and Dust it cleans the leaves and removes unwonted things.
I love my Dieffenbacia Panther and that girl is HUGE! I got a huge floor plant at Home Depot for 12.88 and she loves loves loves Liquiddirt!~

Very informative and helpful video! I got a Dieffenbachia 2 weeks ago and I think I overwatered it. Some leaves turned yellow and dumped their heads. I changed the soil yesterday and moved it from the direct sunlight into a more shaded spot. I will not water it this week in hopes that it will get better!
A lot of plants go through an acclimating period when you first bring them home, so it could’ve been that as well! Thanks for stopping by and good luck! Hope your baby thrives

Leaves are curling and getting brown spots. I HV checked for bugs . There isn't anything . Am in Cleveland . It's quite cold n snowy now. Can I consider re porting ? Plz advise .
I got one of these as my first plant too and I also didn’t know that they were toxic until I started doing more research on my plants. I feel bad because after knowing that they can be dangerous around the house, I neglected this plant often... But it’s such a forgiving plant and it’s still thriving in my home.

They look super happy. I agree they take up a lot of room or I would get a Camouflage. If I had to keep just one it would be my Reflector, which I did find at Lowe's so keep looking.

Oh yeah I saw a reflector at The Victorian but tbh I like the other varieties a lot better 😂 it just didn’t really spark joy for me
Thanks for this!! I bought the most beautiful big Camouflage Dieffenbachia at the grocery store last week, and in that short time in my home the leaf tips are already going brown :(. Turns out the humidity in my apartment is 30-34%. My humidifier came in today though! Wish me luck.
Best of luck! Keep in mind tho you might lose some leaves as it acclimated to your house! I lost about 5 leaves over the course of a few months but now it’s fine
@@MillennialPlanter Good to know! I see that one bottom leaf has turned yellow even though I've only watered it once. I think she also got some damage being transported in my back seat, and now it's showing.

I’ve seen the tiki more often this year. Last year, HD had them all summer
I believe u said the camouflage is the one that I have. It had brown spots on it. Wilt and come off easily, yellowed so I moved it toward the window. It was a little dry so I watered it and water drain out at the bottom and then I emptied the tray. . When I looked at it the next day the leaves are just standing erect it looks like it likes being right in the window even though it said low light on instructions. It was 5 feet away from window. I believe this particular one likes highlight the sun doesn’t come through the window just bright light so it is just seems to be the right light. Let me know what you think? Also I cut out the dark brown spots is that ok? No bugs found. I think when I mist the plant is when I got brown spots.
Yes...I’ve found that, that particular dieffenbachia really does love high light. The regular green ones (like the seguine/compacta and tropic snow) do better in lower light. As far as the cutting the brown spots, sometimes it’s okay but sometimes the leaf still might die off. But hopefully with some brighter light it’ll get better!

I grow many indoor plant even ferns, for some reason my dumb cane plant keep dying. I check the water , never let it dried out . Not close the the sun
Try citronella candles for the gnats and other bugs
For your size dumb canes, how many days do you usually go between watering on average?
Ummm...the biggest one probably every two weeks. It’s in a 10in pot and the other two about once a week.
My plant looks like a big tree, do you suggest that I cut it in half because all of the leaves are huge and touching the ceiling?
I’ve seen some people do that and from I know, they can propagate like that but I’m not 100% sure. Definitely see what you can find online! That must be a beautiful one!
Also I believe it’s called the “Maculata Tropical Tiki” because the “Seguine” has bigger leaf’s and a pattern similar to the snow, amoena and triumph dieffenbachia’s.
I actually checked pretty recently and they call it a Mary Anne 🤷🏽♀️ definitely more of the compact variety.

Hello again, you are right and thanks for letting me know. I’ve been doing some research on all of mine’s too, so far I have honeydew, tropic snow and Marianne. My my Marianne plant was a propagation from a friend’s plant. Her and I both was wrong on the names lol

I'm on my 5th Dieff. plant. I've tried everything but within 3 wks. the leaves are white and brown and then the whole plant dies.
Sounds like the side effects from certain drugs on commercials......... Very Informative.....:)
Fun fact! Lots of plants share the same common name. Mother in laws tongue is a less common name for dieffenbachia and a more common name for sansevieria!

When you put this plant in the shower, are you just wetting the leaves? Or, are you also getting the soil wet, too?
Yes! I bring it in the shower when it needs watering so I would do the soil too...just be careful too much soil doesn’t go down the drain 😅

Hi! First I would throughly check for pests that maybe check the soil and the roots to see if there’s any rot or if it’s root bound.
My very large plant "coils" how can I get it to grow upward? Thinking of just propagating it... suggestions?

I just brought one home today. It's really big about 9 or 10 inch pot . I love it she's beautiful. The one with the reslly light all in the middle. Not sure the name. But the leaves do we.em to be a bit wilted. Not really yellow I think it's prob the colour it's supposed to be but maybe not far frm turning yellow. Should I water ??? Or wait. The soil doesn't seem to be wet,maybe slightly damp to where some sticks to do her not much. I wouldn't say it's fully dried out. Is this because it needs to be watered.im so worried about over watering
Since you just got it, it’s most likely going to go thru some shock and an acclimating period. As long as it’s getting good light and some humidity, it’ll bounce back fine. And I would wait maybe another day or two before watering. Unless the leaves start to wilt more. Good luck! You got this 💚
Can I put it outside or it strictly inside also where can I get a plant stand
Plant stands are at Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe’s, target, Amazon, pretty much anywhere! And they will THRIVE outside. Just keep them away from direct rays

My tiki roots are different from the tropic snow do you know if they require different needs
I would say no but I don’t have a tropic snow so I’m not too sure
@@MillennialPlanter yea my tropic snow is good in water. This tiki seems kinda slow doing so growing in water and leaves where soft from bottom where the water touches them I just hope it doesn't get root rot

I honestly don’t know. Common names are always so confusing & a lot of places just through names around. Tropic snow usually get really big tho!

I have had a beautiful tropical snow dieffenbachia for several months now. My second go around. I have noticed since repotting into a ceramic pot with no glaze inside that a couple leaves began yellowing and a couple were fading in color all bottom leaves. Since watering it this weekend there are now 5 yellowing leaves. I’m not sure what I am doing wrong. I thought maybe lighting also had to do with the yellowing, she was getting High bright indirect light from east and west windows. Does anyone have any tips that may help minimize yellowing of leaves.
My go to is to also just check very closely for pest than check the roots. When plants have so many yellowing leaves at once, it always makes me think either pests or some sort of rot
@@MillennialPlanter I just cRinged thinking about it. I have looked on leaves and stems and nothing. So far jyst ine ild leaf and another new growth point unfurling. 🤞🏽I had changed soil so did not think it would be pest.
Overwatering and underwatering show similar yellowing leaves from the bottom. I dislike ceramic pots because I tend to overwater my plants. I prefer plastic pot inside of a ceramic pot, that way I can just lift the plastic pot and feel the weight whether it needs water or not.
.. Dieffenbachia don't like any kind of cold or drafts.. That will make them drop yellow leafs immediately.. They like water, often, and drying out in between is not an option, only to the point of low moist.. They like humidity and a somewhat steady temperature, nothing below 16c as the lowest.. In winter time they like a bright light spot, and in summer a little more shady..

Can you do a washing in shower to show how? Are you covering the top of the plant or are you letting the water run all the way through? I have gnats. I’ve changed the soil, added pebbles, peroxide and water, alcohol, water and dish soap spray and wash leaves. I’ve tried everything, neem oil by the way smells like 💩 apple cider vinegar, dish soap and water. Now I leave bowls of water with soap in them next to all the plants and every week I see about 20-30 gnats in 2 of the bowls and few in the other bowls around the house. Help!!
Aw I’m so sorry! Gnats are really hard to deal with. I would suggest doing the hydrogen mix (equal parts of hydrogen and water) at least once a month on all your plants, get some of those yellow fungus gnat traps and put them in as many pots as you can and start watering your plants with mosquito bits! You can even mix the bits in your soil which helps a lot but they do get a little moldy. I just poke them down back in. You just have to stay consistent. Good luck 💚

They're some of my favorite too!
They don’t like to dry out completely. Not one bit.
It's not just uncomfortable. It HURTS. A lot. It starts as pin pricking, then starts really burning, and then itching and each stage is an added pain, not a switch. I haven't had blisters, but I only handled sap a few hours ago. Mouthwash helps. It's crazy, but rubbing the mouthwash into the skin is the only relief. Seriously, the topic of relief needs some real research. Either way, DO NOT HANDLE THESE PLANTS LIGHTLY. Wear gloves when doing anything with them, especially the bigger ones. You do not want the diefenbachia burn!
How much did you come into contact with? I've gotten the sap on my hand before and it slightly burned but it wasn't too intense. I definitely think it effects everyone differently.

Anyway that’s what I was always told.💚🙃share, share, share your dieffenbachia if their getting to big, take a cutting and share with friends who have more room. You keep the baby and give the big plant away💚🙃You do have beautiful plants💚🙃
