If it wasn't for the framerate, i would choose the original .Imagine if Silent Hill was released today, developpers would not add fog to run the engine, and all the atmospheric and claustrophobic would not exist,hence SH never had such huge success .A bit same with Alan Wake .More photorealism kills the oppressing vibe and the horror .
The fog effects of the original make it a more dark and terryfying presentation. Back then they did it cuz of bad textures but it sets the mood a lot better

Yeah this is like remastering jaws to show off the cool mechanical shark you can edit in.
