  • Shaun Casey, U.S. Special Representative for Religion and Global Affairs in the U.S. State Department and Professor of Christian Ethics at Wesleyan Theological Seminary, gave the Ensign Lecture at YDS on Wednesday, October 21.
    Dr. Casey spoke on “The Role of Religion in U.S. Diplomacy: The View from the U.S. Department of State.”
    Shaun Casey has written on the ethics of the war in Iraq as well the role of religion in American presidential politics. The author of The Making of a Catholic President: Kennedy vs. Nixon 1960 (Oxford 2009), he is currently co-editing the Oxford Handbook of Political Theology with Michael Kessler of Georgetown University and is writing a book on ethics and international politics tentatively titled Niebuhr’s Children.
    Casey has M.Div. and Doctor of Theology degrees from Harvard Divinity School and a Master of Public Administration degree from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. He is a member of the American Academy of Religion and served as chair of its Committee on the Public Understanding of Religion. He was a visiting scholar at the Center for American Progress and a subject-matter expert in religion at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
    The Loring Sabin Ensign Lectureship in Contemporary Interpretation of Religious Issues was established at YDS in 1994 by fellow church members and friends of Loring S. Ensign ‘51 M.Div. for his 25 years of service as pastor of the Southport Congregational Church.
