You didn’t mention that canals got the cobblestone treatment, a whole chunk of the map was removed making it even more of mess and then it was abandoned
@@squrebox 2 parts were taken out. The palace had a staircase in the other direction leading to a window that overviewed A site and made it much more defendable. Same happened to dust 2. They block the view of most iconic T spawn to Mid door Peek and The map gotten less fun...Then it basically abandoned in pro scene and then valve removed it from Active duty
Canals was removed because it is the only italian themed map in the game without chickens EDIT: I said this statement because he said if you read his description to say this. I didnt expect it to get this heated.
It was removed because its dogsh#t with no redeemable qualities. Not sure why its good enough for casual. Especially when they made other AMAZING maps that get rotated out.
@@IgorSosinski The hive was just amazing, Crete was another Solid map. I remember both were released at the same time together and man I had some great moments in wingman that time
Calavera, for example, was my all-time favorite wingman map. It almost had the 3-lane setup, but in a very subtle way. It had plenty of manoeuvrability depending on the scenario, it even had some pretty funky potential for tricky utility usage. It played great, in my memory.
Canals was map I enjoyed the most out of all cs maps. When they added it me and my friend just randomly decided to learn the map and play it on competitive, and we liked it so much that once we went on like 16 win streak lmao. Those balance changes year after release (B-site moved from bridge, removed ct window at A and some mess with mid stairs) made the map into even a bigger mess and killed it for us. Really wish valve is gonna try to bring it back for cs2
This video reminded me how much I miss de_zoo while you were talking about operations. that was one of the few operation exclusive maps that I truly enjoyed and felt was reasonably balanced. I also would absolutely love if they implemented the missions for an extra case drop per week, that would be a huge change (esp. if they pushed people to learn nade lineups natively ingame).
I played de_Zoo a few years after its release in a 10 stack with mates and I was honestly real impressed. It's got so much potential and doesn't kill the PC. Would love that to come back.
Have you ever considered trying to hold a graybox mapping competition for "experimental maps"? I feel like you're the largest voice in the community actively pushing for more variety in map design and it'd be cool to support it more directly
6:20 Oh how I miss playing Abbey, Biome and zoo. I always enjoy seeing love for maps that only show up for a short time, most of them are pretty underrated.
The operations and the new maps are really what kept me playing the game for so long. Getting a brand new maps every year or whatever. Workout was another one I really liked. also the theme park one, thrill i think?
Fantastic video, and I 100% agree with your conclusions. Honestly after playing this game so long, I very much want new maps to shine. Playing new and weird maps with my community was half the fun of playing CSS and TF2 way back when, and I wish that attitude was more popular too.
For Casual, Canals is my absolute favorite map! It's not at all unbalanced and if you learn the angles you can do really well on either side. Again, that's valid for Casual. Idk about mm, because I don't play that.
I'd love to see a canals remake because A site is baller as hell and you really don't see any bomb sites located inside an enclosed space like a building or hallway which is kind of a missed opportunity. Sure there are some maps with somewhat enclosed bombsites like on Nuke, but they're still relatively open and mid-range even for an indoors area.
the weekly missions is actually a great idea. sometimes i’m just grinding for a case drop and having challenges to get drops faster i would 100% enjoy the game more
I love Canals, and I really feel the map in its current state is perfect... aside from the A site. B and mid are super fun and unique, rushing with SMG's is fun, I love skill throwing a grenade into the small windows on B site, and the skill jumps that let you solo climb up into the B site from the higher balcony as a T feels super rewarding. Unlike some maps, there feels like there are tons of ways to play Canals and you can try something neew each round. Except for the A site, of course, which is very long-range-weapons-or-nothing. CT's can also push here very aggresively by just throwing a smoke to block the alleyway, and although CT's can also push through mid, they often struggle to make it through the doorway since they can get shot from many angles. Meanwhile from A site CT's can take control of the narrow alleyway from the T's, and when this happens it feels like the T's might as well just give up trying to retake it and go to B instead. The idea of a super long angle like in A is a great idea, but needs to be re-thought and have some more interesting geometry. A good example of an easy fix is with CatFood's map Tulip, where he has a church on one bomb site that requires the T's to travel past a long-range sight line, which they can either attempt to challenge or avoid entirely. Funnily enough, Tulip suffers from the reverse problem of Canals, where the sitee with the church is fantastically done, but the rest of the map is much less so. Maybe stitching these two together to get the best of both worlds would be a good solution.
3:40 Btw. the cool thing is that you can actually do a long jump to get up their from side. I really like such movement skill jumps in CS, same with window jump on mirage.
The drop area does have a significant use when you take control of it as a T both before and after the bomb is down. It can be good to keep clearing the site, heaven, and CT all without dropping down. Also you can air strafe into the site and surprise a CT hiding there. Its also a good long site angle against CTs flanking from T spawn the same way CTs play it when they get back there. Also, once you get through the back alleys, planting isnt that difficult when you throw the smoke on site to block off CT. You can even reliably plant out in the open so its difficult to diffuse for the CTs. You can throw the standard site smoke from the drop area as a T too, to help your planter get on the site.
pretty good points throughout the video, but the 'games as a service' style of solution you proposed at the end just doesn't sit right with me. that model of game development has been on the way out for a while now as people realise that getting players to perform benign tasks isn't actually very fun; i struggle to see an alternative solution, though, so it's probably a better idea as opposed to a worse one.
I think the only way is for Valve to be more stubborn than the players, and forcce maps on us. Nuke, Vertigo and Ancient were all forced on us and many peopel complained, but now they're accepted as just part of the map pool. If Valve wanted they could make any map they choose accepted, they just have to stick to their guns and keep it playable. I think the same applies to the workshop maps that Valve remove so quickly, no one wants to learn these maps because there's a fear they'll be removed, but if the map is left in long enough people bother to play it. Hell, Agency often has a lower queue time than Ancient and Train, and Anubis is doing very well at the moment, I really wish this happened more often and Valve added more maps in to shake things up.
Anals is pretty memorable for me cause I played a lot of matchmaking when it was introduced. Felt really different and kinda cool but reminded me more of some militia or italy more than an actual competitive map.

Using rifles on Canals is slightly tricky. In order to compete with sniper rifles you need to take SG552 and AUG instead of AK/M4. Those little scopes makes all the difference in play.
I'd like see this map ported over to Source 2. New lighting, higher resolution textures, rounder models, better water graphhics, and new ways to render for better performance. Then see also how this map fairs competitively with selling back your weapons, dropping grenades for teammates, and unlocking skyboxes.
My friends and me used to main canals when it was in competitive. We werent good players at all but we knew the map and won a lot of matches on it still. It was such a fun map
I love canals (just like Rialto) because when I went to Venice with my gf, you could show her around and tell her all about the cool things in Venice and where I've hit some crazy shots in CSGO.
Insertion II is my favorite CSGO map. Canals isn't far behind. I love maps that do weird things! I don't always want to boot up CSGO to sweat it out. I just want to hang out and have some fun, and the experimental maps embody that philosophy.
I wish Valve would have chosen Canals to pimp up for competetive instead of Vertigo edit: I also really like your idea of daily/weekly missions for an extra case drop. It would fill the gap that we have on the case market due to the new drop changes + it would make people try new/other stuff which is also a great for the growth of the game in general.
I adore canals. CS2 likely comes out tomorrow and with Canals being long abandoned and CSGO likely being deleted, today Is the last day Ill probably be able to play it. I have to go to work in three hours.
this maps is really cool, and i have 10k hours. playing this in casual from time to time grows your knowledge, there is many corners to check, but you can still rush the sites with smokes. really enjoyable refreshing gameplay.
I completely forgot Canals had an update. I still appreciate it, since i visited Venice few montsh before it being released back in 2017, and it was fun to see it in-game, and it was really fun for shotgun gameplay that i mained when i was playing CS. It seems i really love weird maps, since Piranesi is my favorote Source map lol
Holy shit. This might just be the best CS video I have ever seen. I 100% agree withe the message. We got so used to the current 3 lane meta that innovation is basically non existent. Why not try some shit like Valorant does? 3 bombsites, teleporter etc.? Sure 98% of these maps will suck (like in Valorant), but if we don't try these ideas we might never find the next best super fun map design.
Your videos are extremely well made, happy to have found this channel. Can you make a video about cobblestone? Maybe with a montage from all the sick plays on that map and how it was in css etc. I miss playing it a lot.
I tend to praise maps that deviate from the 3 lanes setup but I never came to enjoy Canals. The layout is fine, but both bombsites are horrible imo. A site is way too open and the bomb plant area is tiny with almost no cover. And B site is very claustrophobic, where you're either on one end of the corridor, or the other. Like I said, I don't mind the map layout, but I think bombsites are missing playable places. You need a few different boxes and entrances to have alternative plays. Think about any bombsite in the map pool. There's always some options on how to play a bombsite, sure sometimes too many which can make a bombsite hard to take, but it goes both ways (both for T's and CT's). If a bombsite is impossible to hold, then the objective goes out of the window. Ct's won't bother defending, and T's won't bother taking a site because it's too hard to defend the bomb. Players just go around hunting for kills.
i used to only play canals in comp, was one of the few to get global exclusively playing that map. It was my favorite map until the final version before they removed it from comp, the last version just ruined the flow the map had
i firmly believe that queueing the oddball uncommon maps in comp is the best way to play the game. you meet a lot of like-minded people looking to just have some fun with weird strats on weird maps; but not necessairly not trying to win. counter strike has never been the same for me since the removal of all the reserve maps, and players like me are doomed to a 24/7 office queue with the occasinal agency. i know valve wanted to remove vertiglobals but now they're just office globals. speaking of vertigo, i really miss it too. like, i really appreciate that the 2nd funkiest map in the game is getting its time to shine, but its *so* different that they shoulda just called it "vertigo 2" and kept pre-rework vertigo in the casual pool.
I love your videos man ! And Im very happy with the recent uploading frequency ! Is there any specific reason that you sometimes upload in bullet and sometimes not for several months ? Thanks for the video by the way !
For maps to get proper treatment like nuke did, it has to be trail by fire. I would love to see them add map rotation every month. Tuscan is such a cool map, but the amount of people playing it doesn’t give it enough data for competitive play. I think if we happen to take so popular maps out and put in some new ones. It forces some people to try these maps
I'm a fan of Canals. It's always funny to sprint as quick as possible (as either T or CT) to the B Approach and get a cheeky Zeus kill. I would maybe add another way in/out of A site out the back of it, round the corner from that drop off, and change up Courtyard somewhat. Maybe add a way into it from the Canal itself, near where the boats with the boxes are, so you don't have to run straight into the sightlines of CT Spawn to wrap around the B site. Or, on that note, have a route from A site to Courtyard, like maybe where that garage door is. Fuck it, why not both? Ultimately, I think Canals is a bit weird because it doesn't really have much in the way of a mid lane or traditional site approaches. This is fine, I quite like the ways you can push up as either side to get a sneaky angle, but I feel it's routing makes it a bit too limited, despite it's open expanses.
id absolutely would love if valve added weekly missions. I feel it would help a lot preventing burn outs and feeling tired by always playing the same maps and would make for little fun breaks of exploring new maps and tring new things. I also feel it would help new players feel more interested in the game.
Nice video man! I played Canals a few times in casual with my friend and it was actually fun but it isnt near on a level as Mirage or Inferno for me. Maybe you can make a video about Santorini i love that map i hope they bring it back in CS2!^^
I loved Canals so much and wish that they'd add it back to the competitive pool, not even active dut. Played so different and interesting and acted as a map you didn't have to take super seriously, like office or tuscan.
I prefer the earlier version, where tunnels went through voltage and opened onto the canal, and where there was a back way to B through security. I would also like to see this map return in an improved form, or inspire a new map.
I actually 100% agree, new maps are needed, completely new, both for casual and competitive. Fuck, bring cs crackhouse back, with cs2 graphics itd be a badass casual map
I really think that what brings the map down is bombsite A. For both TR and CT the bombsite is just not worth the risk, while bomb B is interesting in gameplay and design, allowing a lot of different weapons. If they overhaul the map in CS2, I hope they change A and insert something to encourage players to play in new maps (maybe a xp boost would help?)
My very very very first map i ever played on counter strike. I openerd the game and hit casual queue. I played a game of canals and it was love at first site.
Canals has alots of hiding spot! And is also a big map with alots of corners. Insertion should have been with us though it was super fun and hella scary.
You pick Canals as the most experimental map in the game - have a look at Mist and Black Gold from Operation Breakout if you find the time. Black Gold has four lanes and a massive barrier in the middle, as well as bombsites so small and devoid of cover that you are encouraged to play outside of them for post-plant. Mist has T, A, B, and CT in a straight line with three routes from one end to the other and some connectors and sightlines between them, as well as three levels stacked vertically across the map. Both scratch the same itch that Canals does in encouraging you to play in ways that you usually wouldn't, and very interestingly, Valve once released competitive round win statistics per map in 2014 and Mist was - at the time - the best balanced map in the game.
As an italian i would sai that Canals is a really good copy of the city of Venice, just slightly smaller and with the most famous places p.s. i love this map, i have a lot of fun playing it with my friends
So, about the missions, they did that already, actually they even did stuff you said like learning line ups, thing is, it was only during the last operation, an I doubt it’s something we’ll get for just the base game.

I loved that map and I miss it every day
I enjoyed playing canals competitive, was a fun and different map. The power of lurks on this map is unmatched.
Some good points raised there bruss💪💪💪
I play with a group of MGEs maybe low DMGs, we hard queued canals and got to LEM pretty easily when it was in comp rotation, unreal map
This is legit my favorite map that was ever in competitive mode and I can only hope they bring it back in cs2
I actually quite enjoyed Canals back when it came out. I don't play anymore but I was quite the gamer back in the day.
5:38 the proof of this is how the community is treating Anubis. A great map already and people refuse to play
Weekly missions are something this game really needs in my opinion
i used to only play canals in comp, was one of the few to get global exclusively playing that map. It was my favorite map until the final version before they removed it from comp, the last version just ruined the flow the map had
the day canals came out there was 2 possible 4 man boosts that allowed the 4th player ontop of the skybox, I got footage in an unlisted vid
Buying a scoped AR and holding stupid angles on Canals is some of the most fun you'll have in CS.
i firmly believe that queueing the oddball uncommon maps in comp is the best way to play the game. you meet a lot of like-minded people looking to just have some fun with weird strats on weird maps; but not necessairly not trying to win. counter strike has never been the same for me since the removal of all the reserve maps, and players like me are doomed to a 24/7 office queue with the occasinal agency. i know valve wanted to remove vertiglobals but now they're just office globals.
speaking of vertigo, i really miss it too. like, i really appreciate that the 2nd funkiest map in the game is getting its time to shine, but its *so* different that they shoulda just called it "vertigo 2" and kept pre-rework vertigo in the casual pool.
I love your videos man ! And Im very happy with the recent uploading frequency ! Is there any specific reason that you sometimes upload in bullet and sometimes not for several months ? Thanks for the video by the way !
nice video man, i love your content!
In Casual the maps picked are always Cobblestone and Canals and gotta say I kinda love this one in it's uniquness
Reminds me of old cobblestone, a map I love and miss dearly
I think it's a really cool idea to reward players for learning nade lineups in operation missions.
I really liked canals. I think it is better than Anubis.
i can honeslty see CS2 having weekly and daily challenges like Valorant and many other games
Great video and great point!
id absolutely would love if valve added weekly missions. I feel it would help a lot preventing burn outs and feeling tired by always playing the same maps and would make for little fun breaks of exploring new maps and tring new things. I also feel it would help new players feel more interested in the game.
Canals was removed and added to TF2. Confirmed to be same universe.
Insertion should have been with us though it was super fun and hella scary.
i love this guys videos so much
You pick Canals as the most experimental map in the game - have a look at Mist and Black Gold from Operation Breakout if you find the time.
Canals are one of those maps that feel lived in. I love when CS maps do that.
Wake up new csgo lore is out! TY penguin
As an italian i would sai that Canals is a really good copy of the city of Venice, just slightly smaller and with the most famous places
p.s. i love this map, i have a lot of fun playing it with my friends
Once of Palladio's (architect from venice) best creations is the basilica which is nearly replicated in this map. Look it up you wont regret it
So, about the missions, they did that already, actually they even did stuff you said like learning line ups, thing is, it was only during the last operation, an I doubt it’s something we’ll get for just the base game.
the map feels like,it will fit in zombie infection mode.
WELCOME BACK
Canal was so popular in csgo casual play, It's was extremely fun, even If you don't have money, You can just buy shotgun and rush to b.
You should do a video for some of the best maps that were exclusive to operations. I miss the zoo map and the one with the basketball court.
I liked the hostage map in the exercise place
Edit: was that the basketball one?
my fav wingman map for years
I love using the Zeus on this map. B site is one of the most enjoyable bomb sites in the game while I hate going to the A site.
I'd love for weekly challenges to be added, if only so that flying scoutsman isn't overrun by bots anymore
