Fall is upon us & I couldn't be more excited. After the hustle & bustle of the summer season, all the projects, work & adventures, I know that in about a month it'll all slow down. Winter is that way isn't it? Ready or not, here it comes & it forces you to slow down & hunker in more by the fire. I'm grateful for the seasons changing as a lot of us would just keep going full steam ahead with no slow down amen? But the slow down is desperately needed, even if we don't realize it. Besides who am I kidding, there's still a lot of work to do once the temperatures drop. Spend a couple days with us on our Alaska homestead as we continue work on our cabin addition, cook a delicious sausage sauerkraut soup for dinner, homeschool + I'm feeling artsy/crafty & decided to make a beautiful, easy, FALL garland for the kitchen window in the cabin. Thanks for joining me for another video friends, Happy Fall season! Cheers...
📌 ITEMS USED IN TODAY'S VIDEO (Amazon):
    1. Stainless steel french press: geni.us/yULaDZ
    2. Electric glass water kettle: geni.us/mPxKVm
    3. Bamboo drinking glasses: geni.us/ZlDRj5
    SAUSAGE & SAUERKRAUT SOUP
    Ingredients:
1 lb sausage (I used mild Italian sausage)
    2 tbsp of butter
2 small onions or 1 large onion, diced
    2 garlic cloves, minced
3-4 white potatoes (peeled and cut into small bite sized cubes)
    3 tbsp tomato paste
    2 carrots, grated
5-6 cups beef or chicken stock (preferably homemade)
    1/2 tsp caraway seeds (optional)
1/3 to 1/2 cup of pearl barley
8-12 oz/225 grams of sauerkraut (liquid drained off)
    Salt/pepper to taste
    2-3 tsp Italian seasoning
    DIRECTIONS:
In a large pot over medium heat, melt butter.
Adds onions & garlic to the melted butter and cook until onions are translucent.
Dice potatoes into bite size pieces and grate carrots.
Add potatoes and carrots to the pot with tomato paste, barley, caraway seeds, and chicken stock.
    Cook for 20-25 minutes.
Meanwhile, in a separate frying pan, cook sausages & set aside to cool.
You may deglaze the sausage pan with a bit of warm stock to add some extra sausage flavor to the soup.
Add the sauerkraut to the soup pot and cook soup for another 15-20 minutes until the barley is tender.
Once the sausage is cool enough to handle, slice it into small rounds and add to the soup.
Taste to adjust for salt, then serve.

Have y'all given it a thought, to put in a Murphy bed on one of the walls of the office room? There's a way Joe could utilize the "wall" part of the Murphy bed with shelves that when the bed is opened up, they swivel so that everything stays on the wall. Just a thought for when guests like Lexxi & James wanna stay over or your Mom comes for a visit@@HomeFreeAlaska

They’re now in their final year, Year 11 and Year 10. It’s been an amazing (sometimes very frustrating) experience. But homeschooling gave my boys what they needed. My youngest is Autistic and he now schools independently. Enjoy the journey!

I loved teaching math and science together because they over lap so well. Lab exercises can be fun, educational and entertaining to both boys.
P can document the process and findings. C can double check Measurements and verify observations.
    Idea/problem,
prediction/hypothesis, observation, gather data, analyze date for conclusions.
Baking bread once or twice a week, changing the variables to find out the outcomes. Weights and measurements, fractions and conversions can be done at both boys levels.
    Another idea...
Building a small bench or stool.
    Learning about wood/densities
Drill sizes, stability, includes math and science.
Documenting errors is just as important to learning. You don't have 10 failures but 10 ways not to do sonething.
These projects can be student driven.😂

You could put in a wardrobe for storage into that wall that goes into your old bedroom, but opening up into your new room. It would only take less than a metre width in space but provide you with clothing storage esp winter stuff. Agree having a light filled space is important

In order to create the best circulation for going through the spaces, a small hallway would be ideal to allow you to pass through to your master bedroom without having to go through two additional rooms to get there. Sounds like they may need a separate small room guest cabin/w/small kitchenette built? Maybe just counter space/w/small Frig. or good cooler. A place to wash face and brush teeth. Could be utilizing a big ceramic bowel and pitcher like on little house on the prairie😃👍🏼 Or it could be for the office/school room/podcast etc.
Time will tell what your needs will be😃👍🏼 good work Joe&Tina😃👍🏼❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼

I have a suggestion for Joe. When he wants to chop wood instead of using the log splitter, if he'll get an old tire and set the chunk of wood inside of it, when he chops it, the pieces won't go flying off to the side. They stay inside. And if he can find a rather huge, big around tree, he can cut a piece off, however thick/high he would want it, he can use it as a base to put the tire on, then the logs that need to be split inside. Hope y'all can understand what I'm trying to suggest 😄

I once owned a firewood lumber Co. here in Quebec (Canada).. Jo .. please wear safety glasses and earmuff ... you're welcome mon ami. I almost lost an eye due to flyover debris.... and not paying attention to the machine... almost lost my pinky finger. Using machine is risky. But geez ... still love the fresh scent of just cutted wood. LUV the garland!!!!

That new design for the cabin makes more sense than the old plan. How many square feet will you gain with the addition? And, you may want to put a bed in the office, for visitors,or if one of you is sick.

    • @HomeFreeAlaska
      @HomeFreeAlaska  Год назад +4

It’ll add about 120 sq ft to the cabin.☺️ Yes, I like the idea of having a space to put up a guest bed if needed!

    Garland is cute!
If you have any baby pine cones, you can spray and add some around a few of the bows.
I like collecting and use the next year for texture.
The addition is looking so great. Joe is knocking that project out to close up before the first dusting.
That log splitter sure is making the job more efficient.
Looking back at how far you have come in less than six months is just incredible.
We don't normally hunt moose solo here. Unpredictable tanks.
    Enjoy your week🌻
