- This song was released in 1993 and I liked it immediately. Not sure what the song means but generally I believe the reference to Mary Jane is obvious. Anyway, Tom was divorces from his wife "Jane" the year before the song was released so some people believe that is what the song was about. Jane was not from Indiana though....Mike Campbell (Petty's lead guitarist) said the song could mean "whatever you want it to mean." Petty told Mojo Magazine in 2010 that "Mary Jane was the same character as the female in "American Girl" with a few hard knocks."
