  • Here’s our recommendation on the top budget taxi, Uber and Lyft dash cameras. Learn what matters and why we think our choices will protect you when picking up passengers.
    UPDATES: DEC 6, 2018:
    We researched the latest taxi cameras on the market and we posted our thoughts here: / 1497936793642284 The Dome GS65H is still our budget choices but there many different options at the $200 level. We hope to release a new review in a few months once Viofo releases their infrared light equipped camera
    We also tested the invisible 940nm IR light and it works very well on both the Dome GS65H and Transcend 520. The GS65H can have excellent coverage: i.imgur.com/u15FQoe.jpg

    OUR CAMERA PICKS
    I've purchased all dash cams and accessories since 2017. No paid reviews here. When you buy using links below, I may earn an affiliate commission. Car Cam Central is viewer supported.
    DOME GS65H - $85
    Our cheap pick, has the best quality of anything we’ve seen under $100 for taxi & uber drivers. The other cameras we’ve seen aren’t worth considering.
    Get It:
    Amazon USA - Sold by AzDome who states you do not need to ship your product back to China for warranty. AzDome = Dome. amzn.to/2rRenxy
    Amazon UK - Sold by Yuyitec amzn.to/2fr64jh
    GearBest INTL - For everyone else GearBest is your best bet. They will warranty your product for one year but requires shipping to China. bit.ly/GS65H_GearBest
    -
    TRANSCEND DRIVEPRO 520 - $200
    Our upgrade pick and our top budget recommendation. It has added functionality, protection and it’s history of reliability. Specifically it has better video quality especially in the passenger area, 2-year warranty, good customer support, and WiFi.
    Get It:
    Amazon USA: Sold directly by Amazon. On June 21st Suction version is on sale! amzn.to/2sip8sW

    IR LIGHT PROJECTOR
    The lights are plug and play but there are no kits, you will have to purchase everything separately. See the full instructions on our website: www.carcamcentral.com/review/...
    940nm IR Light:
    We now recommend the invisible IR light as passengers can't see a red glow and it works with both cameras. It's slightly larger than the 48IR light we showed in the video.
    eBay INTL: ebay.to/2tO0pc7
    5.5 x 2.1mm Coaxial Car Adapter
    Allows you to plug the IR light into your car's electrical supply. We got a 8ft version. Easiest to find at your local electronics supply store.
    Amazon USA: amzn.to/2tpGCni
    eBay INTL: ebay.to/2vrwO8L
    3M VHB Tape
    You need a small strip of 3M VHB Tape to stick the IR light to your windshield. VHB tape can be removed cleanly from your windshield.

    eBay 1/2" wide, 9 ft: ebay.to/2y9ms00

      Hi Todd, thanks! The same reasons you trust me is the same reasons I'm reluctant to open an online store. I know some review companies like Labdoor sell directly. I'm not sure if that's the right move for us. Manufacturers can refuse to sell to you if you later give them a bad review. I think it's a conflict of interest.

    You have wonderful reviews!!! I really like everything you have done and must say I'm totally sold on the Viofo A119!!!
    However, I am going to start driving for Uber/Lyft and need to have a good night vision/IR option. I really like your idea about the Transcend 520 with an IR light projector. Though, how many light projectors did you use? Did you place them in different positions in your vehicle? For example, if I purchased the Transcend and installed only the IR projector you listed above would that be sufficient or should four IR projectors be installed (in the four corners of the car)?
    What would be a good option overall for someone who would like night options? Could two Viofo A119s setup (one front and one rear) with another camera for facing passengers be doable or would it be cheaper/more cost effective to just buy a Thinkware F770 at that point? What about installing LED floor lighting to help bring more light into the interior of the car?
    Again, thank you for your AWESOME reviews!!!

    I've watched a few of your reviews. Something I'd like to see is what length the files are? As an example, we use DoD dash cams at work; each file is ~30min in length. Some of our previous dash cams had 15min per file; and we even had one that separated the files every 2min (that one went back right away).
    Anyway, nice reviews.

    Are you able to review on dupes for the Transcend? There are a few out there that I am curious about. I'm a part time rideshare driver and this info would be very valuable to myself and others who need dual lens, dash cams. Thanks!

    I've had the GS65H for around 7 months now. It's perfect for my needs. I wasn't completely happy with a suction cup mount though it was one of the better ones of its type. I purchased a generic G1W adhesive mount for around $3Aud and modified it slightly to fit on to the GS65H (less than 5 minutes work and very solid). Very, very happy with the results. I'm running a Samsung Evo+ 32gb card which is working fine. I had wanted a Vantrue N2 Pro but at well over double the price this little unit is great.

      Test run the other night. Went great. Certainly considering a extra IR light but it does pretty good compared to others I've explored. I have a mini van. I can see to the back seat and driver and passenger seats as well as the captain seat riders. Quality is great too. While I can't playback and see license plates it will still give plenty of identifying info should I get in an accident. Be sure to check out our channel on RUclips. We will likely be posting funny videos from those who use UBER #rideshare in our Photobooth vehicle! You can also check us out on Instagram and Twitter to see some of the funny riders! Thanks for the recommendation! Thumbs up on this stellar video!

      Got my camera today, pretty impressed with it so far. I used "Dash Camera Viewer," and it seems to work well for playing back videos on a computer. However, the GPS data (which is appearing on the playback) is not transferring to the player. According to some FAQ's, it may be because the date and time stamp is not accurate. When I change it on the camera it does not change it changes it on the screen but not on the playback. Any thoughts?

    Hey good to see a new video! 👍
    I was checking your RUclips channel a few times hoping you'd uploaded new reviews, good to see you're back.
    As always, great review!
    Would you recommend one of these or the A119 (v2) or other Viofo dash cam for a normal user (no taxi)
    I don't think I would need the in car view, but want best video quality (day and night) and reliability for a budget price.
    What would you recommend?
    Cheers from the UK
    Rob

    • @Lam
      @Lam  6 лет назад +1

      Hey Rob. If you don't need the inside view you should definitely go for the Viofo A119 V2. Great quality and performance. The Yi dash cam could also be a great choice. Since you live in UK, which notoriously is known for having a cooler climate, having a battery is fine. The Yi dash cam is a great choice and it has WiFi which the A119 doesn't. The Yi dash cam also is cheaper. Video quality is bit lower at 1296p compared to 1440p on the A119, but both are great choices.
      -Rolands

    • @ProjectElara
      @ProjectElara 6 лет назад

      Car Cam Central thank you for your reply!
      At the moment the Yi costs half of what the A119 costs. Still I wouldn't mind the extra £50 (my budget is approx £100) if I would get a much better all-round cam.
      With that in mind, would you still recommend the Yi?

    • @Lam
      @Lam  6 лет назад +1

      Well, the A119 V2 is better. Make sure you go for the V2 version, as it fixes GPS issues the A119 had. Like I said, both cameras are great choices, but if you don't mind spending extra $50 definitely go for the A119V2. Capacitor will always be better than battery and the video quality is better too.

      Hi, what size sd card is best? from 16gb to 64gb, as the camera loop records anyway? thanks

    • @Lam
      @Lam  6 лет назад +1

      32 and 64GB are generally the sweet spot. A 64GB card should last longer before replacing plus you can capture close to an entire night's worth of driving which can be useful to respond to unexpected complaints.
      -Andrew

    • @Lam
      @Lam  6 лет назад

      If you can afford it, 64GB is best as the lifespan is longer. More important is that you choose a SD card with better durability. A 32GB High Endurance card from Sandisk // Transcend is better than a 64GB TLC Card.

    • @Lam
      @Lam  7 лет назад +1

      You're welcome Keaton! I tested it out last night and the IR light was picked up slightly by the rear camera but it would not be effective for actual use. There's an IR-cutoff filter so it can't see as much as it should.

      No tri-channel solutions aside from two separate camera products you would purchase. You would need a splitter and possibly a USB charger + 25' cable depending on the camera you purchase.

    Have a question for the Admin, I currently own a KDlink x1 which is working fine but one issue I have noticed when the weather is cold, the camera does not turn on automatically as soon as power is turned on. As a result I am planning to switch to one where I do not have to deal with this type of situation. Mind you I do leave the camera in the car and I reside in PA. Will any of these camera hold up to the cold weather? Thank you in advance.

    I have a question about the transcend dp520 most specifically about the app for iPhone, i currently use a garmin dash cam 45 but I really want one that records the inside of the vehicle as well and on the garmin virb app for iphone, let's say I drive for an hour but I am only interested in like a minute of footage, the garmin virb app lets me trim the video and just save that minute to my phone, my question is, can you trim video clips as well with the transcend phone app?

    I just purchased Vantrue N2 pro (before seeing this video) and I can say it does have IR and Night time mode for rear passengers and it actually works quite well. I picked it becasue I have no intention of ripping up my luxury car interior to feed the cabling to the back cam or hassle of wiring into fuse box. So far I am quite happy with both front and rear cams.
    I personally never use back cam for monitoring passengers as I don;t taxi/uber , for me it was important to have cam with both back and rear vision due to habit of Australian drivers to rear end you and claim you rolled back.. also the rear cam provides decent coverage on both sides in case someone clips you while changing lane.

    Hi, and thank you for your great reviews, you encouraged me to buy the mini 0906 for my personal car and it’s been great! However, I also happen to be a bus driver and would need a dash cam for work as well. The models you reviewed in this video are very good, but because of local regulations I am not allowed to use personal cameras facing the customers. I’m looking for something with suction-cup mounting, as I switch vehicles daily, and preferably with built-in gps and wifi, but on a budget though. I was thinking of the yi dashcam, but unfortunately it lacks the gps. Other models only have gps with separate antenna, which is a hassle to set up each morning. Do you have any recommendations for me?

    • @Lam
      @Lam  6 лет назад

      Hello, Markus. Since you can't film your passengers I would go with single channel models. In that case - the Viofo A119V2 really is the best you can buyt. Great quality, reliability and pretty reasonable price at $90. If you live and drive somewhere cooler, think about getting the Yi dash cam. Also, great video quality and even WiFi.

      Hey Mugen, I may review the Garmin models depending on their popularity. Just looking at their features and specs they aren't doing anything special right now compared to other cameras. In fact they are stupidly expensive.
      I do understand your concerns which is why I focus on looking at having good retail and warranty support. Sellers like OCD Tronic, BlackBoxMyCar, SpyTec will look after you for the entire year and you won't be shipping overseas.
      Most retailers (unless you're at Costco) limit themselves to 30 days or less.

      Hey Tam, you would buy a separate camera. If you have a rear cigarette adapter you're set and ready to go. If not, you can get a cigarette socket extender and reach the back. Alternatively if you're more DIY you can tap into some of the wiring.

      COOFO DVR-63 is actually the same as the camera reviewed here. We recently posted our premium dual-channel camera review and some time ago we also updated our recommendations for budget dual-channel cameras. The Viofo A129 review will soon be out as well. It looks like it's gonna be our go-to recommendation in that category. As far as taxi cameras go, we will be looking at the new Transcend DrivePro 550 which is a taxi camera and the Vantrue N2 Pro seems like a winner as well. Doesn't exist for $200 unfortunately. You can get a very grainy solution even for one channel and most likely won't have a big enough battery to last all night unless you are OK with permanently damaging your battery. Parked recording requires quite a bit of money to do well.

    • @Lam
      @Lam  7 лет назад

      I think a separate front and rear camera are better for everyday drivers. If you need the rear footage there's no chance you can be blamed for "looking tired" and you won't have to worry about the outside being under/over exposed and not seeing anything. Two lenses like these are better for taxi and ridesharing drivers.

    Always have considered a Transcend, but the 32GB max was the issue as is that night-time quality, as I lose a lot of clips on my cheap present dashcam. Great info as usual, thanks a lot Andrew.

      The conversion is what takes most of the time. I can unload a card at 45 megabytes/second which is way faster than WiFi.

      I couldn't find it either. I looked on the Blackview CN website and eventually I got a link from a user at DashCamTalk: dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/update-firmware-g90c-g90-zx-amb-2328-s7l.19613/#post-259692

      Thanks for that. I would never have found it.
      Have you considered adding a 'Resources' or 'Downloads' section to your website? I'm not saying you should host stuff like this yourself (might have copyright issues) but it probably be useful for a lot of people to have links to places to download software and the latest firmware for the main manufacturers. Some of them (Voifo for example) can be a little obscure and hard to find the newest/beta versions.
      Thanks,

      I would but I also don't want to be maintaining the repository at the moment. if I do offer it in the future I want to make sure I keep on top of things and right now it would put unneeded stress on my systems.
      You're welcome Viney!

    Any thoughts on how this lineup changes with the release of the Vantrue N2 Pro?

    • @Lam
      @Lam  6 лет назад +1

      The Vantrue N2 Pro probably would be in a class with the Transcend DP200. We still haven't done enough tests to confirm that though.

    Do both cameras need to be plugged into a power source at all times?

    • @Lam
      @Lam  6 лет назад

      Both do need to be plugged in, their battery won't last more than 10 minutes.

    Vantrue N2 pro or Transcend 520? which one would be best for taxi?

    • @Lam
      @Lam  5 лет назад +1

      Hard to say Jisan. The Vantrue N2 Pro looks really good. Might be even better than The DP520. We haven't reviewed it though so I can't give you a great opinion. My answer right now would be - either camera is a good choice.

    Is the Dome inwards facing lens more noticeable than the Transcend camera inwards facing lens? It seems like the 4 led of the Dome is more white and noticeable.

      Transcend's IR is way more noticeable than Dome's. Transcend uses infrared emitters that are either dim or at a higher 940nm which are considered invisible.

      During the day, is it the Transcend infrared emitter look more noticeable (like 4 white bulbs) than Dome's?
      During the night, is it the Transcend infrared emitter look more noticeable than Dome's? Does the 4 bulbs emit red light at night?
      Thanks

    I wonder what type of dash cam police use on their cruiser? What brand? What ever they use that's what I want on my vehicle.

      I don't have up to date information on this, but as much as I have read, these are the brands more often used by police:
      Brandon CopSync, DigitalAlly, Panasonic, Pro-Vision, Safety Vision, WatchGuard Video, AngelTrax Mobile Video Surveillance, L-3 Mobile Vision, Motorola

    My personal reviews in a nutshell:
    A119 - Clear motion, but not so clear stills. No noticeable rolling distortion, mic is a little weak, CPL filter (Poliarizer) not built in, nor is GPS. Motion sensor is acceptable 3.5/ 5
    Vantrue X2 - Horrible Motion, ghosting in stills too. Noticeable rolling distortion when vibrations apply. No CPL Filter or option to buy, GPS is optional. Motion Sensor (Parking) is GREAT. 2.5/5
    Opia 2 - Clear motion, clear stills, HORRIBLE DISTORTION, horrible colour saturation. NOT WORTH THE PRICE 2/5
    Overall the A119 is the best dashcam for price and especially quality!

    Can you write to an external harddrive with any of the cameras?

      No. The footage will be written on the SD card that's inserted into the camera.
