I've also noticed people tend to take to or accept Buddhism or Hinduism but as soon as you mention anything African based they look at you sideways or have no clue what you're talking about. The lack of information is astounding.
very true
I already bought the book but whenever I go into a "mystic shop" I always ask if they have it so i know where they stand on african spiritualism. I'm not black - but as someone whose people experienced genocide on American soil, I feel a kinship with black people. To have your own cultural narrative, language and tradition ripped away from you is painful. I always talk to the owners of these stores about Jambalaya and Teish because people need to be learning these ways from black/indigenous elders instead of being taught by white people years later when it becomes trendy. I don't know how many "shamans" I've met who "teach" for hundreds to thousands of dollars that most Natives cannot possibly afford.
Moana Das Moana Das I agree. As a Native American woman with Black/Latino/Native American children I find it so important to ensure that my children are aware of ALL of the history and heritage that went into the culmination of their beautiful DNA. It’s something that is so important to both my husband and I. What we have found, is that in our openness about our beliefs and practices, it has dispelled the fear that once lived strongly within both of our families, and we were able to see clearly the roots of many of the traditions that we thought were just normal “family quirks”. But actually had roots in the many practices from our various cultures.
Sadly, you are correct about the lack of information about the Yoruba, Voudon, Hoodoo, Haitian Vodo, Santeria, and other various indigenous ancestral spiritual practices. And if you inquire about books or other tools and resources, they look at you as if you have nefarious plans. It’s frustrating, and it’s a shame.
As for the “Shamans”....*siiiiighhhh*😒
I have a very hard time with this one. The Apache in me gets stirred up and I have to step back and breathe. What people fail to realize, is that the abilities it takes to be a Medicine Woman or Medicine Man, are noticed by the tribe elders when the potential MW/MM are a young child. It’s a lifelong journey and training to become a Medicine Woman/Man. There is so much work one has to do on oneself while mastering healing and channeling, etc.., that many don’t make it. They go mad, or in some cases die. Many choose not to go through the training because of the intensity.
So, when a kind, well intended white person says they are a “Shaman”, I have to use my psychic vision to LOOK at them to see if they are truly coming from a place of pure of heart, or are they seeking to profit off of my ancestors, before my anger rises. Because, they truly don’t know what it takes to be a true “Shaman”. I have to believe, or I would just lose it, that they are ignorant of the truly treacherous path to becoming a real Shaman or Medicine Woman/Man, or else they wouldn’t call themselves that. They haven’t earned it. Taking a 12 week course, or even a 2 year course, could never qualify anyone to be responsible for guiding anyone’s soul across chaotic and sometimes dangerous realms of reality, dimensions and consciousness.
I can’t imagine any Native paying a white person any amount of money for ANY teaching about our own spirituality. It gets passed down from our elders as a birthright. If it doesn’t, by way of assimilation, we still are smart enough to know that we need to look to our own people for that sacred knowledge.
Alafia: thank you for this beautiful review. There's now an updated version of the book, an eBook, and an audiobook. We will meet one day soon.
Those turquoise strands look AMAZING on you. Thank you for making a video on this book ! I really loved your testimony about the early magical experiences of women universally; all over the world.
As well for myself, this book came right at a time when I was questioning so much. To this day, I have purchased online classes on Balade Black. And Yeye Teish has really changed my perspective and it would be an under statement to say this book changed my life. She through Yemaya, have really adjusted my view of the world, of Spirit, and my life. I too come from a Jehovah's Witness background (Just heard you say that) wow. Thank you for sharing your love of this beautiful book. It was the beginning of an amazing spiritual path and understanding for me. I love hearing that it is helping others in the same way who also have a similar background as I do. Coming from a Jehovah's Witness background, you know, I'm sure how your family and those in "The Truth" really embed the Bible and Jehovah into your thinking as "truth". Yeye has helped me step away from that... she's helped me analyze where that thinking came from (my father and his mother my grandmother) to view them now... and reflect that that wasn't a path I chose for myself but one that my parents had bestowed onto me.
I love your excellent review of Mama Teish's book Jambalaya! Yes, it is definitely a book you would use as a reference in your spiritual journey. It is a shame and sad That when it comes to anything African based especially religion people are so misinformed. The gross lack of knowledge about the history of the world especially about Africa and Africans has landed us in a state of gross ignorance about ourselves and our origins as a whole. Most people don't know that Eastern philosophy was brought to Asia by early Africans. As a matter of fact, some Asians know that Africans play a great part in their early history. Look at a typical Buddha statue, he has kinky hair and African features and is believed that he was actually from an eastern part of Africa, and Europeans got their religions from the east, so who is the Mother of all religions? why are the basics of religion all over the world the same? Your message is clear and to the point, thank you.
Yes, its very disheartening but as individuals its up to us to show that what we are made up of is love and light! Thanks for stopping by!
what you said about Africans influencing other cultures resonates with me, as i had my own thoughts and wonders about it. especially since the first humans were discovered to be from africa. i'm still trying to find books to read about this, do you have any recommendations?
I just purchased this book and I wanted to find a review just to see what people thought about it and how it has helped them and their spirituality, and this review was everything I needed. Thank you so much Goddess, beautiful words 💕
You have no idea how this book has impacted me. It really has changed my perspective and I hope it has done the same for you!
Hi there, I grew up J.W. as well. I just pulled Jambalya out of my closet last night. I have been wanting to get initiated for a while. I still have some fears due to religious upbringing, but your video has helped with inspiration today. Muchas Gracias!
I suggest you get over your fears (programming) first before you even think about initiation into anything. You can't progress with the religious motif and idea that there is something outside of you that is going to help you tap into a power you already possess. Initiation is just another form or ideal where you think there is something outside of you that will make you more powerful, i.e Baptism. In most of our minds when we release ourselves from the religious binds we grew up with, we get into this "new spiritual consciousness" but still attribute the old chains and ways of thinking of religion to this new concept., whether it be JW, Christianity or any religious concept we have come to know as a collective, we still attribute "religious" concepts to this new way of thinking. Fear itself is that stepping stone into the unknown and a clear sign that we are still in deep mind control, especially when we don't take the measures to find the answers within ourselves. You have to really overhaul your way of thinking and reevaluate your approach to your spirituality because having fear and bringing in those old programs won't cut it for you, initiated or not. You can initiate into hundreds of concepts and not a thing will change until you change your mindset and religion and the structure of religion as we have been taught has no place in your new found realization. Thank you for stopping by!

I'm reading this book right now! This book has open the door for me to read more about African religion/spirituality. I wanted to get in tune with myself. Learn what my purpose here. And the more and more I learn is to being happy is to be me. I'm also happy to see that I'm not the only one who pick this book to read.
I just finish reading this book. Such a great book!
It really is! Have you tried any of the rituals she recommends?
Thank you Jessica for sharing. Nice video. The minute someone says witch, witchcraft, spirituality people freak out. You are right, no one can save you but yourself. You must do the things to keep your mind and body healthy without leaving it up to one super human being or one spirit/ruler. I need to say that I am not putting anyone down for their beliefs. Now I am wanting to read this book!
Just bought this! Can't wait to read 😀
You're really going to enjoy it, my favorite for rituals!
Love this book, reading it now ♥️
I found this book in the library 20 yrs ago. I think we can all relate to how she tells and shows through ritual instructions. It set me on my path. Beautiful book and Author. Excellent review.
That's something to appreciate, after so many years she still resonates in this generation.
Sister your vibration is realy joyful, 🙏
I was raised Jehovah's Witness as well grateful to be free 2day
thank you for your review made me order the book and i started reading it right away!! i love it and cant wait to get to the end of the book!! thank you so much
One of my favorites and must have! Glad you enjoyed.
My Daughter and I practice a lot of these things already. I believe wholeheartedly that one of these rituals helped me in a financial situation. I was shocked and that is my only explanation was the ritual the night before. I had so much confidence that day and I believe that came across to those around me. It was almost as if they were in agreement with me on every single point without question. To those that pray to God may relate to that I guess.
Thanks for this message

Just bought the book!
So glad you picked it up! You're going to enjoy it! Luisha is amazing and a wealth of knowledge.
I relate so much to what your saying in this video. There are so many females around me at the moment but not many who share that feeling of knowing something to be true when it comes to things like this. I put all of this down for while because I felt like I don't know what I'm doing but it's my anchor and I can always feel this part of me being pulled back to it. Help me. I really don't know where to start and I need someone who knows and has experience to give me some sort of guidance. I feel like I need a detox and a new routine. What do I do?
LOVE your necklace!! & ur makeup so pretty =]
I read hoodoo texts on my channel, you may enjoy them. I really appreciate your channel! subbed.
this book applies to Men as well right?
Hi Juan, No this book applies to all. The rituals are to be used by anyone. The story line is based on woman's experience, but worth the read by any man.
