I have been waiting for a video on probiotics and MS, soon after being diagnosed with MS 12 years ago I developed IBS, one of the things my gastroenterologist recommended was taking a probiotic, in addition to taking a DMT I started taking a probiotic, since that time I have been relapse free and always wondered if there might be some connection between the two. Thank you for this mornings video.
I think you are very brave fighting MS. Bravo! More I learn about all we can do against it, more I feal weak and extausted To try new things, which does not stop MS. Courage To you all
Bravo! 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 It's so refreshing to hear a neurologist pushing something besides polypharmacy! 😝 The morning regimen that my naturopath has me on is water (I add a coffee ☕🤫), probiotic and after 10-15 minutes, a fruit, preferably a pear. 🍐 Her goal: 2 bowel movements a day - in order to clear my head! And you know what? She's ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! 💩💭👌Best regards from Jerusalem! 🙌
Interesting talk. There is little doubt that diet and lifestyle has a profound impact on the microbiome which in turns has associations with various immune mediated diseases.
Glad you are getting into this topic. The MS specialist at the Alberta university is researching this and has proof of a connection between bad gut bacteria and MS. So based on Dr Davis making fermented foods now. And will try lions mane mushroom next week. Since I don't get access to DMT's yet and now also lose arm function even more, hope for positive effects. Since Beth said I can not keep you as a doctor in my health team without a trip to your clinic, am left on my own. But I really hope this will help a lot of people.❣Also you might be interested in the German research of adding 'propionic salt' added to DMT's as treatment (also brain -microbiome connection) 🙋
Very interesting talk! Would love to hear more about this as I think a LOT of current research is looking at this. 70% of our immune system is in/from out gut apparently, seems to me to be quite a big chunk of the MS story. One of my trains of thought was that there may be a chain reaction in people susceptible to MS / a series of unfortunate events. 1) Gut dysbiosis due to poor diet/ high sugar/ high processed foods/ medicines (like antibiotics+ibuprofen) 2) Gut dysbiosis leading to a leaky gut. 3) Leaky gut causing molecules like casein to bleed into the blood stream. 4) These then cross-react with our immune systems and train the body to target myelin in our CNS. Very interesting paper you might be interested in: Antibody cross-reactivity between casein and myelin-associated glycoprotein results in central nervous system demyelination. Thanks for covering this - perhaps it is a combination of factors I for one was 1) under a lot of stress due to job in defense in the EU 2) was eating poorly 3) was taking ibuprofen (which damages the gut I now found out) 4) was sleeping poorly 5) was infected with COVID19 (and likely EBV) 5 weeks prior to my first flare. Feels like the planets aligned to hammer the chisel on my genetic code which caused it to crack - Was diagnosed officially 6 months ago. Definitely think the gut has a large role to play in the story of MS development, I saw one FMT study that showed improvement in EDSS score after transplant! Our gut flora is like a forest, mine was half burnt to the ground... only so far before ecosystem collapse happens as there are so many interdependencies between gut species apparently...
Very interesting. Sounds simplistic but we really are what we eat. I'm 100% convinced that those with a predisposition to autoimmune issues are at the mercy of their diet. More specifically at the mercy of the quality of the food they eat. Modern agricultural practices (glyphosates, genetic modification etc) and what farmers feed the protein we eat and the antiobiotics they are given are not tolerated by a measurable portion of the population. I've figured out I'm one of them. I'm currently following the Wahls protocol and it's early but the effects have been positive so far. Trying hard not to take a DMT to be honest.
Thank you for the valuable information! I can definitely say that since I adopted an antinflammatory diet my ms symptoms have almost disappeared and I have stopped taking medications for pain!
Great video! MS soldier here. My nutritionist said higher levels of zonulin enzyme means the gut lining is more permeable. So leaky gut, which allows harmful bacteria to leak into the bloodstream and then subsequently the brain. Great to get a fecal analysis and learn exactly what’s going on in the gut microbiome and then know exactly how to supplement. I learned from the analysis that I wasn’t digesting fats (so not absorbing fat soluble vit A, D, E, K1, K2). Yikes! So now on bile salts, helping greatly. And also awful looking bacteria profile, so taking probiotics. True lifesavers. Thank you for this video!
Thank you Dr Boster. I really enjoyed this video. I do agree with your assessment and the way our gut influences MS. I have had MS for over 25 yrs. Been in and out of a wheelchair. But back in 2010 I started working out and changed my way of eating. I lost over 100 lbs and walking unaided. I have since regained some but am going to try the intermittent. 😊
Thank you Dr Aaron, actually covering this as part of my neuroscience major, very interesting and potentially impactful topic (especially the transplants you alluded to at the end of the vid - hopefully a study comparing clinical outcomes comes out soon). All the best this year from Canada 🇨🇦, thank you for providing young people like me an approachable and fun medium to learn! 👍🏼
Thank you for creating this channel 🙏 It has helped me through my diagnosis very much. In one year I have lost over 60 lbs in one year after a smarter diet change. Thank you again so much for your amazing hard work on your channel
Brilliant video Dr. B! I have been looking into this a lot lately too. I am excited about it too! I am eating a whole food plant based diet and feel the large diversity of fiber I am eating is definitely a bonus that is helping my gut. I am 15+ years into my MS journey and do believe that in addition to my DMT that my diet and lifestyle choices are helping me to live well with it. Thank you for this video.
Really interesting. I take a probiotic recommended by the NHS (I'm in the UK) and it certainly helps me. My transit time, while still slow due I think to my immobile nature, is improved and added bonus, wind rarely smells. I used to sit on the loo for ages to go and now it's usually reasonable. Mi notice when I don't take them for a few days. I also double them up at least if I need antibiotics and that makes a difference to how badly the antibiotics affect my bowel movements. I'd be interested to learn more when more research is published.
Great video, working on microbiome has greatly improved my MS. Dealing with severe PRMS since 2004, I spent five years in a wheelchair and lost much hand use. I am 7 years into a combination of wahls protocol, fermented foods, intermittent fasting, stress management and other elements that changed everything. I have been out of wheelchair 4 years and counting. I am willing and able to eat weird and it is working. It's a puzzle and I am trying to figure out what is possible. Love your channel and approach. I recently moved to Ohio and may be able to get to Columbus
I appreciate the great info! I started intermittent fasting about 3 years ago on the 8/16 schedule and it's definitely improved my gut and energy level. That was before my diagnosis as well. I added a probiotic shortly after my diagnosis about a year and half ago. I generally eat a healthy diet, but when I don't I no longer have gut issues and have been relapse free since my diagnosis. However, my DMT is probably a big part of that as well. Thanks again Dr. B!
Great video dr B! I've been hearing for quite a while that all autoimmune diseases are caused by gut problems (leaky guts). I will definitely try to eat more sauerkraut and take supplements. In my country, you cannot imagine winter dinners without sauerkraut :-) Also, I've been on the Wahls diet for 40 days now and I plan to continue at least another 6 months.
Another great video. I find a direct link between gut health and the effects on MS. Once I took action I felt so much better and haven’t turned back since. Thank you
Thank you Dr Boster - absolutely fascinating and so brilliantly explained! I wonder if all autoimmune diseases have dysbiosis in common? Certainly an exciting area of research! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hello, Dr. Aaron. so, when it comes about yogurt, kefir, so on, your general recommendation would be that they're ok, without nuances - or that a slight prudence might be beneficial? there are several opinions that dairy foods are a no-no in relation with this particular autoimmune disease. thank you.
Hey Dr. B, how about a video on the neurological sequelae of Long COVID-19. My clinicians want to put all my different symptoms under MS and they’re ignoring the Autonomic Dysfunction that I’m suffering. The peripheral nervous system is under attack too.
Great info! I have been working on my gut for a year. This is not a one size fits all solution! My gut inflammation is SIGNIFICANTLY reduced. Highly recommend
Thank you Dr B!!! My son is following lectin free diet with probiotics, fermented foods, and based between OMS and MS Best Bet diet. Can’t wait for your future videos about microbiome manipulation 😃
Fascinating stuff! Thank you for this video! I’m trying to put it all together. Have had dysbiosis for years with elevated Intestinal Alk Phos which is improving with whole food plant based diet, homemade kimchi and higher quality probiotics. Planning to discuss this important topic with my MS Self help group. 🙏🏻
Thank you for this video! I've always been interested in the topic of the MS/gut connection. Looking forward to any future update videos you do on this topic, too!
Thanks for covering this. The leaky gut concept is something I read about in the past and it peaked my interest. Just as a recommendation from someone who has tried a variety: I take a probiotic supplement called ‘Seed’. It’s a pro and pre biotic in one. High quality and transparent with their ingredients.
Hi Dr Boster !! I have been doing intermittent fasting (16h) since my diagnosis, but now I have to switch from Copaxone to Tecfidera and I was wondering if I could continue fasting, having the first meal at noon with the medication and the last meal at dinner. Do you think it is feasible to continue fasting in this way? Thanks for all your videos!!
Note that if you use the DMT Zeposia (Ozanimod), then eating fermented foods is not recommended due to its interaction with Tyramine, which is also found in fermented foods.
I've been eating a whole food plant based diet since last March. All or this gut microbiome makes my head spin!! From your prebiotic description I think with all of the fruits/vegetables/whole grains/legumes (no meat, dairy, oil) -- not sure if I'm getting enough probiotics. If I take a supplement - is it possible to get too much?
Wonderful explanation of what & why& how the micro biome works. They’re finding SO much about our MB/ gut health ( seems like it could affect numerous things in our body) Thank you for continuing to keep us updated/ educated and in the best health we can be. ❤ #WehaveMS #sharingiscaring
I've been trying to find research on different bacteria that I can make at home but then I read something that said those on Kesimpta or immune modifying medication shouldn't take live bacteria. Confused.
Could the overuse of ABX be a cause? I contracted Lyme disease and was treated with a lot of ABX. I now suffer from MS. Could the destruction of my stomach be a cause?
I can't give you medical advice. I recommend you talk with your clinician about this. I hope my video has provided you with educational information that help you have an engaged conversation.
@@AaronBosterMD thank you for getting back. I will ask my clinician who I’m seeing in 2 weeks. I so appreciate your posts/ sessions and the expert advice given by you.
Thank you for this great information, Dr Aaron. I have had MS since 2005 and have had mild symptoms, so I haven’t been on any medication. My MS became more prevalent in the last couple of years since C*vd hit, as stress, fast food and alcohol consumption increased. And all of a sudden, I had major stomach issues and after lengthy tests and many doctors, was diagnosed with irritable bowel. Shortly after that I developed foot drop which I am working on fixing with exercise. I really believe there is a connection between the gut and MS. I have started on fermented probiotics provided by my herbalist, and I have started to see a real difference in my gut health. I have started to eat more and more good food that I couldn’t eat before. Fruits, Vegetables and many other foods were my enemies as I could not digest them, and my stomach would ache after eating them and even worse constipation was a real issue. My gut health has improved drastically with these probiotics, exercise and really watching my diet and I have also added kimchi to my diet. Very interested in hearing more about postbiotics and butyrate. I really believe that if I fix my gut, I will be able to fight my MS drug-free. Excellent video!
Dr. Boster would still want to see you on an effective DMT - not for now but for the sake of the Georgia down the line. See his videos on being 5 for 5, and on the importance of taking a DMT. Love from Jerusalem. 🤗 ❤
That is interesting. Improving your gut might help a lot, I think. But dont only rely on that, MS is well known for behaving strangely, so maybe you will need to start using some drugs for it. But I definitely wish you “calm ms” for as long as possible! That being said, I am gonna go take my shot now…
Wow such interesting information. I wonder when we see pre and probiotics in your new venture….😊
