- Sailing vessel Tapatya. After the excitement of the Olympic flame passing right by Tapatya, we set off to sail to Brest bay, rounding the strongly tidal cape at Barfleur, crossing the infamous Race of Alderney and rounding Ushant.
This is the story of SV Tapatya, a self-built, Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of our adventures as I live aboard, sail and strive to find out just what such a self-built, low-budget vessel is capable of.

Thank you :-)

That brioche looked delicious... and the jam equally so, and certainly symbolic, given its provenance. Thank you, Tony and Hazel, for another absorbing and entertaining episode. And congratulations on a passage well made. Now you're in Biscay! Looking forward to your next video. All my best - Chris.
Thank you Chris. It was, and we are! 😃😃😃
That jump into the water at the end of the journey looked rather chilly. Must have been very bracing. Glad to see you completing another leg of the journey to Spain. You both look very happy to be out on the water. Best wishes for a comfortable next leg of the journey.
Thanks Matt. Yes, we’re getting nearer, just the small challenge of Biscay now 🫣😎
Good test for boat and crew went very well. Gonya Tony and Hazel. Go well ok
Thanks Rob 😃😃
Nice one Tony you are both very happy nice a Olympic dave looked cold
Thank you Kevin. Yes, we haven’t quite reached the warmer water yet 🥶
You definitely are finding out how that beast sails and it appears to be safe and dry.
Cheers Tony.
Thanks Tom. Yes, she’s going well so far 😃😃
Glad you showed us where the goat/sheep noise was coming from. I thought it might be the rigging. Glad all is well.
Thanks Dennis 😃
Love watching your laid back style.
Nice to be spending quality family time together.
Thanks Jim. Yes, family time is great 😃
Hi Tony, and Hazel. Great shot of Tapatya sailing taken from another boat (1.44). First such shot of her sailing taken from another boat, etc., if I recall correctly. Great stuff
It is, Edward. Thank you 😃
LoveIt
Thank you Peter 😃😃
Man, I'm kinda jealous but happy for you! ✝️🙏❤️🇺🇸🇬🇧⛵️👣☘️😊
Thank you Melinda. All the best!
Hi Tony , like the new “sail by” in your intro 😀
Thanks Chris 😃😃
Nice one.. how"s that windvane working out..?
Yeah I'm waiting for that too.
Thanks R.E. The windvane should theoretically work; I just don’t feel we’ve had sustained suitable conditions for it yet. I certainly still need to mess with it to get the ideal setup. We’ll get there 🤔👍
Enjoyed that and liked the sail by in the intro. Pleasing to see you get the payback for all those years invested and sailing South with your daughter this year is another bonus. I have read the other comments so I will not ask about the windvane.😉⛵️👍
Thanks Norman.
I’m fairly sure I’ll get it working one day. I need a bit of time to experiment with it… Priorities 🤔
Nice nice nice
Thanks 😃😃
4-5 day sail testing boat and crew. Passed with flying colors.
All the best, Roland 😃
Very enjoyable thank you. That yawl at 10:15 looked wonderful. Really clear images on my big screen ... are you using a gopro for filming? I noticed you didn't use the windvane. Is it not working how you'd like it to work?
Thank you. Yes, I film mainly on GoPros. They’re very good, mainly 👍
No, the windvane isn’t working yet.
good episode, however, the question is why is the wind vane not in operation plenty of condition to try it. Also the E auto pilot seems to have to work hard, is the response time correctly set ? ( may have not the correct word for it but you know what I mean). Fair winds next legs.
Thanks Dennis
I feel absolutely no sense of urgency to get the windvane working. I’ll get to it when I feel like it. The tiller pilot is working splendidly 👍😃
tony how is the wind vein working out have not scene working these past videos
It’s not working as yet, Donald. I’ll mess with it at some stage 🤔
