The Sons of Katie Elder was another great movie with J. Wayne.
I saw it at our local, Drive in In the 1960's or 50's!
That is a good one. My favorite is Rio Bravo.
Thank you for honoring our ancestry, our actors, and our firearms and their inventors. You did a public service on this one.
Thunder, gunfire, Hickok's voice.......those are the sounds of freedom

He's just psychologically getting you prepared by looking at these revolvers . Not to say that I don't like them but he would get more viewers with auto's.. We'll see you in the future.
Your missing the sound of the screaming eagle
I believe that the original movie revolver was not a Colt but a Great Western Arms Company, made in Los Angeles. Colt suspended production of their SAA at the onset of WW 2 and did not resume production at the war's end. During that time western movies were very popular and the prop houses needed a supply of SAA revolvers which were becoming scarce. In 1954 Great Western started making copies of the SAA knowing that there was a demand in the movie industry.
John Wayne appeared on the company’s catalogs through its entire run. He was presented with two sets of engraved revolvers, one of these sets he used later in the 1976 film The Shootist. Audie Murphy and Mel Torme were other endorsers.
Great piece of history and thanks abunch and that was my papa's favorite cowboy actor Audie Murphy he would yell out his name every time we watched a western with him in it !!!
@Monotech2.0 No he was 4F, turned down by each of the services and finally just made war department films. Had sustained a disqualifying injury in a stunt gone bad. He should have at least had an honorary rank or status.
"Mr. McCandles, I thought you were dead!"......Big Jake; "Not hardly!"
Rooster cogburn John Wayne true grit or if you would prefer Jeff Bridges as a rooster cogburn both performances were outstanding...
Both great but the Coen Bros remake with Bridges may be the best movie I ever saw! Amazing.
Jeff bridges? Christ just cried
@@bobcrone6151
Nothing could beat a one-lunged, cancer surviving John Wayne riding that horse and jumping that fence at the end of the original movie. Nothing! Bridges did a great job, and the female lead was excellent in the remake, but nothing could top The Duke clearing that fence at his age.
Well stated sir, two absolutely epic films.
@@brewick2794 exactly. I think that’s why I respect that remake film so much ... it took relevant and fair license with the original, yet did not compromise the legacy and heritage of that genre.
True Grit was John Wayne’s only Academy Award. Great Movie.
The BEST John Wayne Western is "The Searchers," but my favorite is "Rio Bravo."
I read someplace that John Wayne actually knew Wyatt Earp. When John Wayne started making movies in the 1920s an aging Wyatt Earp was a technical director in Hollywood. John Wayne, working on Western movies, knew him quite well.
The earp walk
This is true about Wyatt Earp being an advisor in early hollywood. So very likely he did know him.
John Wayne's Rooster Cogburn was one of his best roles!
Yeah but he hated playing that character
@@gorillaninja78 ok ?
The character of Rooster Cogburn in True Grit was his only best actor performance in his career although i think he deserved more. Great gun by the way. He used this gun in many movies. I always remember that color of the grips. Beautiful
The quite man was a good movie
Gun laws are like telling law abiding drivers that they can't have cars because drunk drivers too have cars.
Driving a car isn’t a constitutional right. Gun laws are like telling certain women they can’t vote because they’re not feminine enough. Or telling people they can’t voice an opinion unless it’s approved by the government.

I bought an old 1947 Iver Johnson 22LR Safety Rifle a while back. It was rusty. Worked it over with real fine steel wool, wiped it down with a dry rag, then used mil spec LSA all over. It gets that treatment every so often. It is a great shooter.
I grow up watching those John Wayne movies. Still watch them in fact just two nights ago I watched the shootist. One day maybe I'll buy that.
I know exactly what you mean....I feel sorry for the youth of today. They've missed out on the best. Including Rooster Cogburn............ it's not okay that people haven't heard of John Wayne........ Also, thank you for bringing back some wonderful memories watching those wonderful movies.

He even talked with Wyatt Earp. Can you imagine how that conversation was? I’d love to have been there.
When was that?! John Wayne must’ve been young if he did talk with him 🤣
@@ItsSamHussey Wyatt Earp was a technical consultant in early Hollywood in his later years. I’m not sure how true it is but I read somewhere that he worked on some of JW’s earlier westerns so it’s likely. That would be quite the conversation to sit in on wouldn’t it?

Hickok seems like the old ex outlaw and gunslinger of an old west town that loves showing off his skill once and a while
Just throwing this out there so you know... I live just south of Tucson and in September there was an announcement on the local news that old Tucson was going to close down indefinitely because of the covid pandemic. Ownership is going to be transferred to the county and they will decide what to do with the town if the covid panic ever subsides.
Very sad for those of us who grew up near it and were able to visit frequently to walk the streets that The Duke strolled down....
Are kidding one of John Wayne’s best characters movies.
Hickok45: I like all of your videos but I LOVE your videos dealing with Single Action revolvers. They are so much fun to shoot and collect I wish every gun owner had at least one of them.
Rumor has it Duke soaked the original grips in tea to age them........
Hickok in case you are wondering the original grips were made of Catalin an old Bakelite type plastic used in the 1930s. Definitely one of my favorite types of grips I own.

I believe some Cimmaron revolvers have a factory 'old age' finish. I've also seen them in mirror blue-black finish, as well as nickel-plated and basic bluing. They also have nice one-piece wood grips, like a colt original.
When we hear "the sound of freedom" where I live, we lock the doors.
The same revolver in all the Cogburn movies. It really got beat up. I like it. Might have escort one home.
I really like the cowboy guns. Super fun to shoot as well. From old cartridges to the new ones, love them all. They work.
Gunsite has a course I will take once they let us out of covid mania for defense with a single action revolver.
I carry a single action at my ranch in 45LC. Powerful or soft, depending upon how you load it. Hits about a 2.5" group at 25 yards, but that is the shooter not the gun. Have taken "opportunity" hogs just walking around in the early morning with it. (Yes, they end up in the deep freeze and get eaten.)
John Wayne played Cole Thornton in "El Dorado"
The hat, shirt, gun belt help you to look mighty fine but the best accessory is the pistol in your hand!

Rooster cogburn is one of the best westerns out there
My father told me that in the very first john wayne movies they used live rounds . When they shot into the canyon and hit the bolder the sound was real.
The story Mike Harvey (CEO of Cimarron firearms)tells the story that the name Rooster came from the man he bought the original Colt from in 1979 at a gun show. Supposedly a Bandito MC member. And the John Wayne Foundation wanted a fee for using the name Rooster. They didnt end up getting it.
Hey Hickok, Mike Harvey told a story about a gun show in Houston Texas where he made a deal on a rifle pistol trade. The pistol was the "Rooster Shooter". When the young man turned to leave Mike noticed Rooster embroidered on his jacket and on the back was the Bandito's badge. The Rooster is an exact copy of that pistol.
