Just started the video but I just wanna say thanks for being so consistent and for all the videos. I know keeping it up might be tiring or draining sometimes but you’ve helped me level up my film making and my business in more ways than you could ever know….okay I’m gonna watch the video now 😅
Nice breakdown of all of your audio gear Blase! I like your organization and I really liked your tip about the dual mic boompole mount, very sweet idea.
Thank you for making this video. First off. Your lighting in this video is so crisp and amazing. Also, I have been looking to invest into audio and this video is super helpful.
I've got much of the same gear. Another few items that might be helpful for you is ground lifters/direct boxes. Depends on if you're regularly tapping into existing systems. Pocket sized recorders are also handy in a pinch, and the newest ones are tiny enough to piggyback on an existing mic if needed.
SuperB video. I am glad I found your channel a few days ago (Nanlite FS-300B search brought it up), since I am binge-watching it. I just started all this videography madness a few months ago and I have so many questions, but thankfully, you have many answers. Keep the good content coming please.

Got myself some of those tool bags from harbor freight. My favorite place to shop now. I have a dedicated audio bag too, just the VM40 & DJI kits in it though.
Hi, thank you for sharing your knowledge. Could you do a video about setting timecode on Fuji cameras? Something for beginners, where you cover everything from setting it up, to syncing it in a NLE post. I know very little about this topic and I'm probably not the only one.
I’m upping my interior interview audio game by getting a Schoeps super cardiod boom mic. It’s incredible how better it is than the MKE 600. It’s pricey but wow.
For tying xlr's and other things may I recommend T-Fix cablelbinders ? The come in all sorts of sizes and I never go anywhere without them (granted I'm and audio engineer, specialised in FOH work) but still very handy to bind something temporarily! Thanks for the video btw!
You aren’t getting phasing or combed audio problems from booming a shotgun mic indoors? I also used to boom shotgun mics like the MKE 600, DPA 2017 or the MKH 416 indoors, until I got phasing problems with one of my interviews that pretty much ruined the audio. Luckily I had the interviewee lav’d with a Zoom F2BT as a backup, but ever since then I stopped booming shotgun mics indoors if I can help it. I have since been testing my shotgun mics to see if I could reproduce the problem, and I’ve determined that it’s far too easy to screw up the audio with a boomed shotgun indoors, especially in tight, untreated rooms. The problem apparently arises from the sound waves bouncing off the ceiling, floor and walls and hitting the interference tube at slightly different times, creating the combed audio from phase cancelation. Granted, the MKE 600 seems to fair better than the MKH 416, but I’m able to recreate the problem with both mics. For this reason, I bit the bullet and picked up the MKH 50 for booming indoors.
Never had this problem in 25 years , in all sorts of room ,99% of all interior interviews have a boom/ shotgun mic . I wonder if there is something else at play here. Shotgun mic for interior interviews is 100% standard practice for any video work in any country on the planet . It's usually the main and radio mic,s the backup.
I actually have never had that happen. I am always monitoring audio in real time with headphones to make adjustments before its baked into the recording
thanks! i don’t have a breakdown but key light is just bouncing off the white wall to my left. light streak is via a projection attachment and small 60w light. I then have some backlights hung in the corners my studio both pointing at me which is what is giving the hard light on my shoulders / the desk.
depends on the project. if I am using a recorder like the tascam, I am typically recording them separately then syncing in post. i think you can route the output of the tascam direct into camera but I haven't messed with that workflow enough to know the trade off of audio quality. if i am recording say 10 interviews in one day and audio quality into camera is good enough, I'll just run my mic straight in and call it a day to save work in post. Hope that helps!
Resolve lets you select two audio sources on your timeline, right click and then select auto align. From there you select based on waveform and most times it will sync it right up.
Thanks for the detailed breakdown of everything, its really helpful! But I would like to ask, if the VM40 receiver is plugged into Camera(operated by DP), and im the Boom guy who holding the VM40, may I ask how do I monitoring audio in real time with headphone? Do I have to use a long cable headphone and monitoring from the receiver? Or is there any easier way to do it? Because Im standing a quite far distance from the DP, and DP couldn't multitasking to monitoring the audio and record video at the same time. So I tried the Comica APP and monitor it with mobile phone, but I couldn't listen any sound from the mobile phone(even there is a "phone spearker monitoring" option), any advise?
Great question and perhaps the common downside of these budget products - they solve one issue but then create others. You can monitor via the 1/8" output on the mic itself but in my testing seemed much too quiet to be able to hear it properly as there is no independent control of the level coming from that port. I think it's more designed to be used by someone operating a camera and monitoring audio at the same time but with the added benefit of internal recording in the event of interfering / clipping. That is great feedback and think their next model would be wise to include a dedicated headphone out with level control on the mic itself or the ability to send it to two receivers at once
@blasepivovar thank u so much for the feedback, its really bothering me with this issue, but good to know the downside of this, guess i will find some other ways to work around with this. VM40 already considered very good based on this price! And thanks again, I really did learn alot from u 👊
@@sRagnar Got it! I don't make dedicated videos like that but maybe can do a test in the future next time I am using them side by side. Also.
