That came out awesome Bruce! Finding the right foam is SO important. PE, XLPE, EVA, EPS.... There's a lot of ways to go, but most of the time one type will emerge as the right one for the job.
Wow, that is really beautiful design and such a great video as always, Bruce! All the subtle details you put into your pieces make such a difference! Oh and I like your tip about getting glue everywhere...apparently! 😂
Bruce, I love the zebra wood. It's so different from any other type of wood. I watch you, Drew and Mark making stuff from walnut, maple and such and I get so jealous. Here in the UK we don't have much hardwood to choose from and so what we do have is really expensive. You guys are so blessed. Keep up the food work. Merry Christmas 🎄
That box came out great! Normally I'm committed to the We built a Thing podcast but I'll definitely check them out. That odies oil looks interesting. Normally I just use Danish oil but I'll have to pick up a jar of that and check it out. Awesome job as always Bruce!
Thank you so much! Oh, don't get me wrong, I still want you committed to the We Built A Thing Podcast! ;) Yeah, give Odie's Oil a try...I think you'll like it. It really brings darker woods to life!
Nice project Bruce Your intro is nice, you’re speaking to the camera and the presence is good Have you ever experimented with giving a few shots of the finished product during the intro? I’d keep everything the same, maybe try it on some footage and see if you think it works. For example when you speak of the podcast a few pics could also work - basically I’m talking about b-roll Thanks for sharing
Great build, it turned out really nice! One suggestion when cutting the lid off is to insert shims the thickness of your blade kerf and use tape to keep the lid from moving or flexing. I like to use the brown binding tape from StewMac because it doesn't lift the grain when you take it off.
Beautiful build Bruce. On the foam you may have wanted to go even finer on your slots for the flies. There is a product out there called "Nubby Tac" that is used in some of the commercially available fly boxes. Another option is "Ripple Foam". That being said the DIY aspect of cutting your own means so much more.
Matt is a great guy and I don’t think he gets as much of the love as Destin does on that podcast. Glad you are recognizing him. I really enjoy his 10 minute bible hour podcast. Even though we are of different denominations of Christianity, I find his perspectives help me better understand my own beliefs.
Awesome idea with the foam from HF and the logo looked real nice on the acrylic. Could you also have used tape on the acrylic or something else tape like? I know that you are not supposed to engrave on shinny things and that is what the tape is for, Right? No lathe but I was thinking about the small LASER like YCMT has, small but cute.
Thanks! I'm glad that foam turned out well. Yeah, you can use tape to mask for laser engraving. If you notice when I get the piece out of the laser, I peel some masking off. This is just pre-masked material. It has tape on both sides.
Yes, mine is a CO2 laser. I don't really know for a diode. I know some people engrave with those on clear glass by painting on some tempra paint (black), and then wiping off the paint after. You might try that and see if it works.
Only things I would have done would differently is cut the lines in the foam going the other way and cut the foam a little shallower. Sometimes flies are taller than you think and could use a little more height to not flatten them out.
I don't understand the slits in foam if you use strips then you take every second one out. the other way is you put solid piece in so the hooks stick in it is how i do it.
What a disappointment. I clicked on this video to see a "wooden fly". Unsubscribe! JK, you did an amazing job Bruce, and a great recommendation on NDQ. I've been listening since their first episode and I always learn something.
digging that logo on the clear. everything came out really nice!👍🏻
Thanks so much, Seth! I love how an engraving looks in the clear acrylic!
Awesome video again Bruce! I really wanna learn to fly fish!
Thank you! I want to learn also...never tried it.
Bruce A. Ulrich we just bought a canoe so I think next spring I’ll give it a try!
Amazing attention to detail! Very nice job.
Thanks so much, Robert! I surprised myself. ;)
Man, that turned out awesome, Bruce! Love that acrylic engraving, the zebrawood, the splines, all of it! Turned out so nice, great job my friend!
Thanks, Drew! I’m really glad I went with the other foam!
Looks great. I have some zebra wood, I think I might have to copy you for an earring box for my wife.
Thank you! Yeah, go for it! That would make a beautiful little earring box!
That came out great. Unexpected use of a foam tile, thats a neat idea I'm going to have to file away.
Hey thanks! It worked great, kind of to my surprise. I’m definitely going to keep it in mind for future projects. Thanks for watching!
Looks great! I know he’ll love it!
Thank you very much!
awesome video! That 3D logo thingamajig is super cool!
Thank you! I really like how engraved acrylic looks!
Awesome job Bruce! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks so much, Fred!

Thanks so much, Greg! I’m soooooo glad I didn’t stick with the first foam.
Great job. I suggest using thick craft foam from Micheals in the future. It is less dense and easier to slip flies in.
Good call on that
That zebrawood looks great accented with the maple, I think that was clever using the Eva foam for the flys
Thank you very much! I love those two woods together. They might be my new favorite
Awesome work Bruce! You always deserve a hundred thumbs up 👍
Wow! Thank you very much!
That is a great little box. I love the contrasting splines!
Thank you! I think I like maple with zebra wood more than with walnut now.
Great Job Bruce! It Came Out Really Beautiful Bud👍
Thanks, Steve! Really appreciate that!
Amazing work Bruce! I love the touch on the splines
Thank you, Bao! I really think the very blonde splines add a lot to this design!
Wow, that is really beautiful design and such a great video as always, Bruce! All the subtle details you put into your pieces make such a difference! Oh and I like your tip about getting glue everywhere...apparently! 😂
Ha ha. Yeah, I can make a glue mess. That’s for sure! Thanks for watching, Ethan!
Very nice job. When cutting the slots into the foam I would've used a thin heated knife - the slots would be thinner with a more professional finish
That would have worked well I bet. Great idea!
Such a beautiful build. The wood combo is perfect!
Appreciate that, Jeremy! I don’t even fly fish and I want to keep it!
A really great box man. I really enjoyed following along!
Appreciate it, Mike! It was a lot of fun to create...well, except for the hinges. I hated those tiny things! ha ha

Thanks so much, Max! I really appreciate the kind words and for you following along. Merry Christmas to you also!
great work Bruce! Very crisp video too! 😊
Thank you very much! I worked a ton on this edit. Ha ha
I think splines are probably one of my favorite accent pieces on a box, so simple yet they add so much.
I agree with you! I really like what they bring.

Such a great project. It turned out so well. Also, if someone hasn't already commented on it. Your video quality is impressive.
Well, thank you, Shane! I really appreciate that!
Nice project Bruce

Thank you! Yeah, I’ve done that in some other videos. I just happened to not do it for this one. Thanks for checking it out!
Bruce built a box. It looks good and holds flys. AND THEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVED!!!
Ha ha. YES! And now I’m singing the Destin & Matt version in my head!

Good options if I build another one soon. Thanks for watching!
Awesome! I once found fly box foam, It was sort of wavy.
I for the life of me don't remember where or what it was called.
Thank you very much! I couldn’t really find any either
Matt is a great guy and I don’t think he gets as much of the love as Destin does on that podcast. Glad you are recognizing him. I really enjoy his 10 minute bible hour podcast. He is very thoughtful in everything he says and does. I appreciate his perspective.
Wow real nice makes mine look like crap. Hmmm maybe I should make one
Yes! Go for it!

Extra, thanks Bruce.
Thanks for watching!
Your Glowforge would make short work of cutting and scoring the EVA foam from HF.
nice box, now turn yourself a zebra wood plate for some of the fish your owed :)
Good call! It would be a complete set!
Could you have used the thickness sander for the lid and box bottom after separating them? Thanks just a thought.
Yeah, possibly so. I was being very cautious not to scratch the acrylic in the lid.
Awesome video and box! When you started drilling the holes in the box I thought to myself, now why is he putting brass there?? Lol
Thanks, Graydon! ha ha. I've got you conditioned to me putting brass rod into stuff now. Too funny!
Is it a co2 laser you engraved with ?
I have a xTool
s1 40W. Any ideas how I could engrave clear acrylic with diode laser ?
Yes, mine is a CO2 laser. I don't really know for a diode. I know some people engrave with those on clear glass by painting on some tempra paint (black), and then wiping off the paint after. You might try that and see if it works.

Those are good suggestions. Thanks! I'll be sure to do some of those when I make another one.
Does the cva glue affect the finishing process at all?
It possibly would, but I sanded it all off.

Oh, I thought this said "How to make a "Wooden Box Fly"... Was very disappointed that no boxes were thrown in the making of this video.
Sorry to disappoint! Maybe I should have had Fisher's Shop launch it with his trebuchet.
Not everyone has all this equipment in their shed !
Never said they did
