  • Al-Nakba - Episode 4
"The Nakba did not begin in 1948. Its origins lie over two centuries ago…."
So begins this four-part series on the 'nakba', meaning the 'catastrophe', about the history of the Palestinian exodus that led to the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948, and the establishment of the state of Israel.
This sweeping history starts back in 1799 with Napoleon's attempted advance into Palestine to check British expansion and his appeal to the Jews of the world to reclaim their land in league with France.
The narrative moves through the 19th century and into the 20th century with the British Mandate in Palestine and comes right up to date in the 21st century and the ongoing 'nakba' on the ground.
Arab, Israeli and Western intellectuals, historians and eye-witnesses provide the central narrative which is accompanied by archive material and documents, many only recently released for the first time.
In early 1948, Jewish paramilitary forces began to seize more land in Palestine. By the end of July, more than 400,000 Palestinians had been forced to flee their homes, and their plight as refugees had just begun.
In May of that year, Swedish diplomat Count Folke Bernadotte had been appointed as the UN Mediator in Palestine. His mission was to seek a peaceful settlement.
The Count surveyed devastated Palestinian villages and visited refugee camps in both Palestine and Jordan. The scale of the humanitarian disaster became apparent, as he witnessed cramp living conditions, long queues for basic food and scarce medical aid.
Count Bernadotte was no stranger to human disaster; with the Red Cross he had rescued over 30,000 prisoners of war from Nazi concentration camps. Now he advocated the Palestinian's right to return to their homes.
In a report dated 16 September 1948, he wrote:
"It would be an offence against the principles of elementary justice if these innocent victims were denied the right to return to their homes, while Jewish immigrants flow into Palestine, and, indeed, at least offer the threat of permanent replacement of the Arab refugees who have been rooted in the land for centuries."
The Count's first proposal argued for fixed boundaries through negotiation, an economic union between both states, and the return of Palestinian refugees - the proposal was turned down.
On 17 September, the day following his UN report, Count Bernadotte's motorcade was ambushed in Jerusalem. He was shot at point blank range by members of the Jewish Stern gang.

I have studied the tragedy of Palestine for many decades. This outstanding documentary summarises it in an extraordinarily informative and moving way. I was surprised to see historical footage and hear new information I had not come across before. "Al-Nakba: the Palestinian catastrophe" in 4 episodes has set a benchmark that will not be easily matched. This is essential viewing.

The BBC has made a couple of short documentaries. There is one about how Irgun strategies and tactics inspired "terrorist" groups around the world, from Algeria to Malaya. I can't find it at the moment. There is a radio program available "A Date with Bevin" about the new state's international terrorist activities. I am careful about my vocabulary because of the proven possibility of this platform to censor alternative opinions.

I doubt the Western World cares, sorry to say. I mean the masses, not the individuals. After all, that same "civilized world" created the US, Canada (the country where I reside) and Australia very much in a similar manner. In India they were not much more different (although they didn't manage to depopulate the region), In South Africa and other African regions, they implemented Apartheid the same year they established Israel as settler colonial entity, and the same year the UN ironically declared human rights, 5 years after the Holocaust took into effect in Europe against indigenous people by Germany and its collaborators . In Latin America they destroyed the indigenous population, and until today indigenous populations (or what is left of them) are still treated with indignity. In Indonesia and Malaysia similar atrocities happened. I do not have any hope in the collective "civilized" west conscious. It is harsh, but it is a reality.

In the UK where I am from, we were never taught about our Colonial past. Sometimes it feels as if life on earth started only after WW2 when we emerged as the 'good guys'. There is never the mention of problems we created and stored which continue to cause untold misery in different parts of the world. I only learned about the Palestine issue in its earnest when I moved to the Middle East in year 2004 and had the chance to travel to different parts of it, including Palestine. As one of the historians said, genocide is not complete without removing the traces of the people from history- as if they did not exist. Precisely the reason why we are never taught about these issues and there is never a mention on mainstream media. I hope this documentary will not be removed from YT. It is an eye opener.

My life stories with Israeli apartheid:
Since the Nakba in 1948, my Palestinian family has been displaced by Israeli forces from Jericho, their birth place, to three different refugee camps in the West Bank until they settled in one camp near Bethlehem, where they started their fourth new life after all of their assets they had in Jericho like houses, farms , shops, and lands were confiscated by the Israelis and simply given away to Israeli settlers who immigrated to Palestine from Eastern Europe.
After that my dad worked almost all of his life for Israeli building companies in the occupied West Bank to secure basic needs for his children. My mum and despite her mental illness caused by the displacement trauma, had somehow and miraculously managed to keep us all alive , and together.
However the saddest aspect of this brutal Israeli occupation was not the loss of our land in Jericho itself, but the overall poor living conditions we experienced under the apartheid military control where the Israeli soldiers can shoot and kill innocent Palestinians without being prosecuted. Of course, lack of basic human rights has been the main highlight of the Israeli occupiers who did not give neither my mum nor dad any health care, social care, life or health insurance , compensation for displacement , care home or even basic retirement salary as they later became frail and ill. My parents were lucky to bring up a family in such inhumane circumstances and for me they were my biggest heroes and without whom the story of my life would not be possible to tell.
The story of my family is just one of millions of similar stories in Palestine and I’m sure there are more horrific stories to be told, but there are also many that can never be heard as their heroes are no longer with us.

People from both sides of the conflict, historians offered their testimonies and facts. This lends great credence to the documentary. This documentary has been very hard to watch. I'm really glad that it exists even though it has been down-trended to a digital backwater by YT's algorithms and I hope that as people slowly but surely come across it, it will help to educate many about this terrible injustice. I'm Jewish and was brought up believing all of the lies about the 'noble' Israeli army, there being no such thing as a 'Palestinian' people and that the 'Arabs' left because their leaders told them to. The latter being the most egregious lie of all because so many of the 750,000 refugees were forced out at gunpoint having heard about the many massacres that were taking place and listened to what we now know to have been Israeli 'black ops' radio broadcasts in Arabic telling them to run for their lives. I hope that in my lifetime, I get to see this crime against humanity redressed and atoned for as it should rightly be.

I really liked this documentary but it made me even sadder about the situation in Palestine. I am afraid that a new forced transfer of the Palestinians is unfolding before our eyes . Yesterday on al Jazeera an Israeli politician whose name I don't recall was asked a question which he could not answer and I really loved the question because I was asking myself the same thing " why are you forcing them to move south?" He said that Egypt was obliged to open its borders and in order for the Palestinians to receive health care and food , and then the question I wanted to hear came "why Egypt ? Why not Israel ? Moving to the north would be easier and safer for them ? " of course there was no answer , and unfortunately I do not think that the answer is because they are afraid that Hamas members will be hidden among the innocent Palestinians , but because they just want them to leave Gaza strip forever ... This Hamas awful attack was what Israel needed to make its "problem" disappear .... It makes me think that it is possible that the Israeli army did nothing to prevent it on purpose given the fact that Egypt had already warned them ... I am so sorry for all these innocent people on both sides !

I can understand now why Israeli politicians always want to talk about the more then 2000 years old ancient history to defend their right for their own state (which I fully support, but not like this). It's so much more romantic, and a nice mix reminding of what they told me in Sunday School as a boy. It's clear it was a nice fairy tale and many lies. With an ugly recent history like documented here I can really see that. The other part of the story they told in Sunday school was that Israel in 1948 was basically empty, nearly a desert, and that the immigrating new settlers turned it in short time all into a blossoming landscape. The problem with that story is that they had to first empty it from the existing population, and then take over all the orchards and fields, and restore some of it to restart farming and growing crops, fruits, and vegetables. Of course it's not as simple as that, but the main point is clear: This was completely a conquest and ethnic cleansing, and it's still going on. That's not a pretty picture, especially now, after the horrific terror attacks by Hamas on Israel Oct 7 or 8, 2023 with more than 1200 Israelis killed. Israel's response is underway, and it will this time be much worse than "mowing the lawn". It will possibly become a 2nd Al-Nakba when they destroy Gaza, which is well underway. But it may well be the end of Israel unless they finally get a grip and get rid of the supremacist Bibi and his genocidal minister of defense, who still sees Palestinians as subhuman.

Very much like our own U.S. history of manifest destiny--"Those natives aren't putting their land to any use, so we should rightly take it and make farms and cities of it and move the natives off it." Those who win a war get to tell their side as the approved history and erase the history of those who lost. No wonder our country supports Israel--we have done the same thing in the past.

On 12 May 1949, the parties including for the first time Palestinian representatives signed the Lausanne Protocol. Annexed to the protocol was a copy of the partition map ofResolution 181 . The UNCCP's third progress reports states that while the map was to form the basis for discussion, adjustments of its boundaries could be proposed. Accordingly, Israel signed the protocol but did not commit itself to acceptance of the lines drawn on the map. The Palestinians accepted the resolution and its partition map. Israels Zionazis well we see the what they did.
The Zionazis loved the idea of partition so much that they murdered Count Bernadotte the UN mediator and carried on with their brutal ethnic cleansing. The zionazis later even elected one of the murderers Yitshak Shamir as Prime Minister.

They rejected the UN's 1947 two state solution, UN efforts to move toward statehood in '56 and rejected Israeli's offer to return all captured lands in the '67 six-day war in return for a peace agreement. Finally, rejected every US president since Carter has offered a plan leading to statehood which has been rejected by the leadership. I watched this excellent series today. It is just so tragic. I'm an American Jew who desperately wants a peaceful existence for my people. Both cultures have legitimate historical claims to the area; they really do. But in Eretz Israel/Palestine, it seems, the two goals--"existence" and "peace"--are incompatible. Between the current trend in global politics toward ethno/religious nationalism, the successful resurgence of the Israeli right, and the support of Trump and evangelical American Christians--who want an Israeli ethno-state so that the Rapture happens and all the Israelis go to hell--I fear that this ends with the concern expressed at the end: "Palestine is lost."
The two state solution and an internationally administered Jerusalem was really the best idea all along. :-(

The end of the military occupation and subsequent end to oppression of Palestinians would be a start toward long term peace, yes they would need to make some changes very gradually and others very quickly and yes there would be difficulties initially, but that should not be used as a reason not to make a start and they would eventually be worth it. Continued building of settlements is not a sign of wanting peace.

The two-state solution implies the forced expulsion of Arabs from areas designated for Jews. Likewise, it would imply the opposite in Arab dominant areas. The ideal solution would have been a unitary state, but that wasn’t in Great Britain’s interest (I.e., Israel is a buffer state to for its regional interest in the Suez Canal. Furthermore,The two state solution was never accepted by one of the parties-the Arabs. As such, it never was a “solution,” as much as a colonial ambition.

I keep trying to understand how they could do this to these people. Why are jews more important? Kick one out let one in? I can't understand.

This documentary was hard to watch. I feel so many emotions. I never fully understood in depth what happened in the past and how this conflict came about. It is exceedingly insane how such crimes can be committed. Why and how could something so incredibly evil happen. This is truly the worst thing to happen to the human race, to this world.
