- In 1947 when the UN General Assembly voted for the partition of the region between Jews and Palestinian Arabs the land was divided on a relatively equal measure.
But after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War only 22 percent of Palestinian land remained. When Israel was founded in 1948 it divided Palestinians between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, creating separate territories with very little freedom of movement between the two.
In the Six-Day War of 1967, Israel occupied both territories, began building settlements and appeared to implement separate policies on each.
"The aim has always been to create different atmospheres and cultures; here and there," says Dr. Nashat al-Aqtash, a political analyst and academic.
The decades of separation have distanced the Palestinian communities living in the two territories who have developed distinct social and cultural identities.
None of the conflicts or peace talks over the decades, including the Oslo Accords of 1993, has succeeded in changing the map or this divide.
Filmmaker Asraf Mashhrawi examines the political, social and economic history of the split, analysing major events such as the Oslo Accords, the Fatah-Hamas conflict, the Israeli blockade of Gaza and the attacks of recent years - with interviews from Israeli experts like Haaretz journalist Amira Hass and lawyer Sari Bashi.

This is truly saddening. There are no winners here. Only lost lives, and broken souls (on both sides). No doubt there another side to this tragic story that is to be said from the perspective of the State of Israel. Having said this, given the horror of holocaust, one would think people of the State of Israel would be the first to empathize with, and reduce human suffering. I guess two forces drive human behavior. Fear and Empathy. Fear drives need for control and aggression. Empathy is the ability to see oneness even in difference, and leads to caring and love. I can only pray to God Almighty that there will be a day when the Israeli and Palestinian siblings are able to leave behind their fears and embrace their higher, more powerful, emotions of empathy, love, and caring.
I actually see Israel as a winner because if they are not stopped now the Palestinians will be expelled to the Sinai - after 70 years of inhumane living conditions - and the world will not even blink BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE ANTI-SEMITIC! - SO WHAT?!?!?!?!

Let's be real, Israel has NEVER wanted a Palestinian State to exist, and without the people, the state can't exist. What you're seeing is colonialism, oppression and suppression of a specific people, an ethnic cleansing, a genocide, Illegal occupation. Must be a struggle for you to not be able to open you're eyes and see it. Two wrongs don't make it right, the Israelis don't have a right to become perpetrators of crimes against humanity! (I say Israelis because it's not just the Israeli gvt but it's also "settlers" doing it).
Maybe another more promising option would have been to end the illegal occupation and the take back the illegal settlements.

General assembly number 181 was clearly rejected by the Arabs. The 1947 petition plan was accepted by the Jews and rejected by the Arabs. After the 1947 petition plan was accepted by the Jews. The Arabs immediately went to war. In 1948 the Arabs joined with their 1:49 from five Arab countries, and attacked Israel, the Arabs were defeated they lost the war. The Arabs after the Oslo accords continually rejected peace offers in 2000, 2001 the Clinton parameters as well as in 2008. The Arabs should know you reap what you sow.

The Israel Absentees’ Property Law of 1950 stated that any Arabs who left their place of residence between Nov ‘47 and Sept ’48, [this does not mean they actually crossed any borders], were declared absentees and their property subject to *appropriation* by the [Israeli] Custodian of Absentees Property.
A detailed account was prepared by Joseph Schechtman... _“The amount of this property,”_ he wrote in 1952, is _“very considerable”: 2,990,000 dunams (739,750 acres) of formerly Arab owned land, including olive and orange groves, vineyards, citrus orchards, and assorted tree gardens, became totally _*_deserted?_* (Note: deserted only because those who attempted to return to their land and homes were killed) _... 2,070,270 dunams were of good quality, 136,530 of medium quality and 751,730 dunams were of poor soil. In addition, 73,000 dwelling rooms in _*_abandoned?_*_ Arab houses and 7,800 shops, workshops and storerooms became ownerless in towns and villages._
*Bank accounts estimated to total up to 5 million Palestinian pounds and left in Arab and non-Arab banks were frozen by the Israel government. All of this Arab absentee property, movable and immovable, was entrusted to an official “custodian".*
Schechtman went on to detail how the property was utilized:
_It is difficult to overestimate the tremendous role this abandoned Arab property has played in the settlement of 100’s of 1000’s of Jewish immigrants who have reached Israel since the proclamation of the state in May 1948. 47 new rural settlements established on the sites of abandoned Arab villages absorbed 25,255 new immigrants...over 1 million dunams leased by the custodian of Jewish settlements and individual farmers for the raising of grain crops._
Large tracts of land belonging to Arab absentees have also been leased to Jewish settlers, old and new, for the raising of vegetables. In the south alone, 15,000 dunams of vineyards and fruit trees have been leased to co-operative settlements; a similar area has been rented...This has saved the Jewish Agency and the government millions of dollars.
Abandoned Arab dwellings in towns have also not remained empty. By the end of July 1948, 170,000 people, notably new immigrants and ex-soldiers, in addition to about 40,000 former tenants...have been housed in premises under the custodian’s control; and 7,000 shops, workshops, and stores were sublet to new arrivals. The existence of these Arab houses - vacant and ready for occupation - has to a large extent, solved the greatest immediate problem which faced the Israeli authorities in the absorption of immigrants.

Israel built the wall around Gaza between 1994-2021. Was it to stop suicide bombers from Hamas in 1993? Didn’t Hamas stop in 2005?
I would point out that when the individual was talking about the map at the time of the partition....the second that the partition went into effect, Israel was attacked on all sides by a combined Arab Army to include the Palestinians. Israel, with little outside assistance won that war and changed the map to what it is today.

Excuse me for being ignorant on this subject. So I may ask stupid questions. So as I see it, Gaza being part of Egypt, and the West Bank being part of Jordan, Israel refuses to link both Gaza and the West Bank because of govt. differences between Egypt/Israel and Jordan/Israel?
If Israel wanted to link Gaza and the West Bank via a tunnel or an airport, does Israel fear of their country being split into two different states, such as Gaza and the West Bank are now?

correction about the claim that there was always a Palestine, there is no recollection in history of a Palestinian state/people/nation, there are recollections of the place and its inhabitants being called Palestinian since the roman days, before the British the region was under ottoman rule with the Israel/Palestine or whatever you wish to call it being a sort of international zone between the Arab nations at the time.
Officially there was never a Palestinian state or a group of people named thusly since the Romans named the inhabitants of the area as such with no distinction between Jews, Macaroons Iranians Egyptians and whatever, this is a sly tactic trying to say that the Palestinian people are a distinct group here when in fact you talk about ambitious Arab groups from the likes of Iran and Jordan mostly with the mission to subjugate the land under Qatars holy doctrine per their religion.

These documentaries never state that the 1948 'arab Israeli war' was started by arabs. From the beginning, they would not accept a Jewish state, tried by violence to eradicate the Jews and lost. They lost that and the six day war; that's why they are in the position they are in. No one came in and simply displaced them, they lost wars...it's happened countless times to countless people in the history of the world. I will never understand why this situation is considered any different.
What astounds me is where is all the Arab oil rich countries accountability in all of this, the least they can do is assimilate their peoples. Let me begin my comment by saying that I am not Jewish, or Arabic. But I am a student of History, so I'm interested in all sides of a story. Now to my comment: I'm 15 minutes into this show and it is so far completely one-sided against Israel. Israel did this, Israel did that, Israel took over this or that. But not once yet has the show mentioned why Isreal did whatever it did. The show so far has not mentioned at all that ALL the Arab nations attacked Israel several times to try to wipe them out, which is how they got some of the territory they occupy. I agree that Isreal is not completely innocent, but I wish if a story is going to be told, tell it all from both sides.
