I started off my airsoft "career" building up a Vietnam impression, which spiraled waaay out of control. I had tons of fun doing the research and building the kits, but I always struggled at games and OPs, since my Vietnam equipment is all I ever had.
It took me longer than I'm proud to admit to realize that running a historical kit at an everyday pickup game or a modern themed OP meant I was putting myself at a disadvantage for aesthetics. I was slower, heavier, less comfortable, and less effective than almost everyone else - but I wasn't about to sacrifice the authenticity of the impression I'd spent months researching and thousand of dollars building for airsoft's sake.
I ended up separating my historical impressions from airsoft and I've done blank fire reenacting for the past few years. Now that I'm finally getting back into the game, I'm forcing myself to remember how miserable I was before so I don't relapse and start doing an impression as my main and only loadout again.

Dude SAME. I started a US Army Combat Engineer circa ~1989/1990 loadout. It's quite a bit cheaper than a 'nam loadout, but it's just so difficult to get the right gear, especially in a normal size. I swear I've seen a thousand SM/XS PSGT vest for every one L/XL PSGT vest. I just fucking gave up on making it accurate, and stripped it WAY the hell down. And I still move like a tank! I usually swap it out for a Gopnik/Insugent loadout. Adidas top, BDU bottoms, flecktarn chest rig, bundeswehr field cap, AK47. Is it accurate to anything, ever? No. Do I move fast as fuck on the field? Yup! Am I incredibly effective? Well, no, cuz I suck. But if I didn't, I would be!

Some guys probably know this, but, most don't, in countries such as Russia, Belarus and Ukraine that is the only way to play airsoft, 95% of all teams do an impersonation of some unit, e.i. DEA quick response unit, Nicaraguan piranhas, taliban and etc. They take it very seriously, people or teams that don't do impersonation are called "pokemons"))) thats why manufacturer companies like G&G, ICS and Krytak and many others are not popular for having wrong markings on the gun. Oh and one more thing, they call airsoft-strikeball. Little fun fact about airsoft in other countries)))) anywho, love your channel, very positive, tons of interesting content and info. Regards from Turkey via Azerbaijan))))

totiksilkway Do they have people in Russia (mainly people from the caucuses) dress in their traditional costumes (cherkesska, papakha, gaziri etc.) and play like that in a team of some sort? As I’m a circassian from the shapsug tribe (living in America though) and have always been curious about people airsofting like that.

ive heard of guys in the military blaming airsofters and the civilian gun owner community at large for increased demand/back stock on certain items (plate carriers, camo clothes, boots). Ive always thought that was an issue with the manufacturer and not the consumer because they usually have separate sales lines for military/leo and civilian markets. if by chance they manufacturer doesn't then its not our fault or problem.

This was problematic for me when I built a Vietnam War kit for a themed game at my local field. I started the day with belt and suspenders, 3 ammo pouches, 2 canteens, butt pack with spare clothes, E-tool, bandolier, M1 helmet... and slowly shed things from my belt as the day went on. By the end of the day, there was a pile of stuff at our designated FOB that was basically everything I had ditched from my kit, and all I had on my belt was two ammo pouches and the canteens.

I'll never ever go reenactment, cosplay route again, for that exact reason. I want something that can play airsoft well. That's all I need. I don't wanna cosplay some military unit. I once tried doing a early 90s US solider with Alice Belt PASGT armor and helmet. It sucked. I was so uncomfortable. This was before I was in the military myself. After that time, I never wanted to feel those levels of discomfort in a hobby again. Short carbine guns and a light setup are the way to go for me.

About sizes, it seems to be the opposite for surplus stuff. I run a Soviet Afghan war kit, and you can always find Afghankas in sizes like 46-3 or 60-6, but it took me forever to find a 50-4. (The first number is height and the second is waist/chest size.)

I have three primary loadouts. My main rn is US Army circa the late 80s/early 90s. Next is my modern German loadout, and third is my gopnik memelord loadout. I'm also working on a modern Russian loadout, but I can't be bothered to buy the stuff rn lol. I know everyone has a US army loadout, but everyone either has, like, Modern Multicam CoD heroman loudout, a Vietnam kit, or occasionally a WW2 kit. I have NEVER seen an 80s loadout in person, aside from mine, of course. And that really surprises me, because woodland/chocolate chip BDUs are dirt cheap, as is ALICE kit. And I just use an M16A1, with Scarface front end. So l naturally feel like a pretty special snowflake. Too bad it's like wearing an over in the summer lol. Also, I don't wear my US flag patch backwards, like the real Army does. I do plan on going into the Army after I get out of college, but I'm not in there yet, so I'm not doing it. As for the German loadout, I just like being different lol. I've gotten some flack, because I use an AUG, not a G36. Technically, German Spec Ops uses AUG, even though most people don't know that. It's just Flecktarn everything lol. It's all surplus, too. My gopnik loudout is just the woodland pants from my woodland BDUs, a grey sweatshirt, Adidas tracksuit top, balaclava, ushanka, and of course an AK.

Also as someone that was deployed and in the miltray i think it is important to consider that in the military that when it comes to gear we took what was issued if it was required for us to or if my sargent was going to yell at me if i didnt take it and if there was something on the market that worked better then what we issued we would totally use it. I'm just getting into the milsim and if you find something that works and is better then what is issued use it! Like as a wierd example we were issued iso mats i never used it cause i used a sleeping mat i got from a sporting goods place that worked way better then that dumb iso mat.

I do a late 1980s USMC FAST (Hell, you could even call it a DEA or USMS) loadout based off of a photo I caught of FAST in Panama utilizing a Colt SMG.
I have a converted VFC Avalon that I've modified into the aforementioned gun.
And while I'm all for people running how they want to, I find it a little problematic when people run a kit like a special forces loadout and don't take any liberties to make it comfortable for their using.
I mean, as long as you're not slapping on farb to your kit, you shouldn't really have a problem with using period-correct items to make your kit easier to use for you.
It sort of defeats the purpose of doing a Special Forces loadout but not wanting to modify it past what you've seen in pictures, you know, considering they're not exactly photogenic.
tldr- pet peeve: people dont realize that compromise can exist within reason

Regarding impressions kits, more so for modern/current kits, since much of it is up to operator preference to what they use for the gear or is mission dictated, I've wondered why it is not as acceptable in terms of impression kits to stay in the spirit of what they actually do and build a kit that works for you in the same general parameters that the operators have to work in such as camo patterns or a few select pieces of kit.

Wanted to do Marine Force Recon until I realized I just liked desert MARPAT/ green flightsuits with coyote plate carriers looked cool. Wanted to do Spetsnaz until I realized I just like how a GORKA suit looks. Wanted to do MARSOC until I realized I just liked M81 Woodland. The only impression that Ive been consistently working on has been the support class from Battlefield 4 (which a CIRAS with a bunch of M60 pouches is not the most practical thing for field games) and the only other one Im close to finishing is a black hawk down ranger (tho getting an m16a2 will be a pain). The only impression I could see myself doing in the future is a 1980s VBSS Force Recon loadout, surprisingly easy, its just USGI jungle boots, chocolate chip BDUs and a 1970s airforce survival vest, the only expensive part is the airdeck crew helmet.

It doesn’t look like any other headlamp available and I’ve yet to find even a Chinese knockoff of it.

Well, it's about fun and not as much as reenacting, isn't it? As a medieval reenactor I know how things get quite a expensive price for an item you simply NEED to have to be authentic but yet for airsoft I feel it simply is not necessary. Take the gear of most of rebel/insurgent/militia forces as an example. Sustaining yourself while supporting others on the field can really be way easier, simple and probably as effective in much simpler way than carrying whole USMC impersonator gear on your back. Also, we're talking about few days of game at it's maximum, not a whole guns blazing conquest where you actually need shotload of equipment due to manevuers or possible isolation.

I know this is an old video, but one point I think is important that I haven't seen any one say on any other videos. Real people in the actual military can buy and use gear that they have bought on their own. So just because you like a set up that isn't completely made from issues gear, doesn't mean it's now inaccurate, it just means it's inaccurate to the ISSUED gear.

My unit reenacts gulf war and earlier 82nd airborne living history and static displays. We wear patches, especially for the events with big veteran turnouts. We square away perfectly and they always appreciate it and feel honored. Patches really depend on what you're doing. Don't wear them out to McDonalds and don't have a trash uniform, it just looks disrespectful. I was in the military, but not the 82nd, I just represent it in a way that does them justice. Also, I look 20 years too young to have served in the conflicts we reenact (I'm in my 20s)

My thoughts on the patches you were taking about. I'm a veteran from a very proud unit and when it comes to airsoft I don't wear any of my old units patches in my airsoft gear. But I have seen some players wear the unit patch. It's a coin toss I think. If your wearing you problem think the unit is cool and that's why you got it. If a vet ask you why are you wearing that tell him. But if you upset a veteran by wearing it than be respectful and take it off.

Can you make a video about
military/sf veterans playing airsoft? I wonder what they think about it and how they see other players. Greetings from polandball.

I’m former navy, played with several other sailors back in VA, and the field we played on had members from all branches plus the coast guard and LEOs.
We’d steam roll some CoDsofters then 5minutes later get rekt by legit SEALs.
As long as you don’t take the game too seriously most veterans are indifferent, but if you’re rolling a spot on SEAL impression and walking into a quiktrip for a monster they’ll probably make fun of you.

See, I dont do full, exact impression kits. I do loosey goosey impression kits. It looks the part and is as accurate as possible, but only had what I need. Also, I think the impression community is toxic as fuck. If you don't have real stuff, they look down on you. My kit is a mid 80s US Army Infantryman. The ALICE gear apart from the belt is original surplus. The woodland top is Croatian, but it's a direct copy of the US BDUs so I don't care. The pants are civilian. The helmet and cover are repro. I just tell people that I don't want it to be 100% accurate, and it never will be. Because I'm just not enough of a loser to dump 1000+ into it. I do it because it's fun, and it looks cool. Airsoft is basically just a fashion show where we shoot at each other.

  • @johnpjones1775

Maybe this is because I was blue water navy, but basically as long as you’re not claiming to be or have been in unit you, when you never were uniform, patches whatever. It’s a tribute to that unit.
Didn’t earn it, don’t claim it.If you’re doing a real good SEAL load out good for you.
Personally because I had the opportunity to be some of those guys if I wanted I just prefer to go with African bush war merc/PMC style type look...or at least that’s how I fancy it lol

If the current US army and navy went back to the height of the Roman Empire, with enough fuel, rations, and munition to Kee things running for a while, how long do you think it’d take for them to conquer the entire world? How many casualties could we expect?

Patches:........Would it be the same argument if we used US and you use UK insignia. It introduces fresh argument. But, as you say, there are alternatives. Using morale patches and mock military offers more than enough. Having said that I was questioned on my first game by a Royal Marine due to my surplus UBACS with full colours. The clothing comes from the municipal tip, the lads at the barracks next door bin loads every week (location my secret!) Either way the Commando took me under his wing and taught me incredible stuff. (reckon he took pity on the elderly retiree with the lost look!!)

I'm in the same boat Eric. I love looking to shots of active military for inspiration on gear layout and how they run things, but unless the event calls for an impression, I hate having my options limited to such a drastic degree. That and, if I'm going to be buying legit gear, it better double for use with real firearms on my part as well. Though maybe that's just me pinching pennies.

I run a us army impression, is it the most practical? no the helmet weighs a ton along with the armor, which is hot here in florida, but then again if i just cared about effectiveness i would run an aeg with high caps and no chest rig or anything... so i find impressions to be just fun....

Real SF operators use their gear to accommodate what they feel is most convenient. Like number of mag pouches, how many pouches they have. Real SF guys also try to keep their plate carriers as light as possible. As long as someone uses the right camo, and same companies in the the actual SF gear list then you're fine.

    • @elder_brewster
      @elder_brewster 5 лет назад

False. There are always SOPs and teams get issued certain carriers. Lately, it's been the JPC. Yes, how they set it up is on them, but there are SOPs

I mean with the whole patch debate I don't see why you can't wear like a rangers tab with your impression kit as long as your not claiming the ranger title but at the sams time I can understand why a ranger would be pissed to see u wearing a ranger tab it's something they earned and had brothers die for its not unreasonable but I'd say just like if your going to do it make sure it's in like the celebration fashion yk like your celebrating this elite warrior unit and there accomplishments and sacrifice to out nation cuz like if your just wearing a unit patch for ur weekend skirmish I could see why it would piss a veteran off

I like loose impressions. I purposefully don't do exact impressions, because almost every pic of every soldier is of that one particular soldier and his/her needs in that specific operation. I look at the standard issue gear, and wear as much of that as I need for airsoft. For example, I run a US Army Infantry Rifleman Circa 1989/90 impression kit. I have more or less everything, except the PASGT vest. Because that's a shitload of weight and a lot of heat for pretty much no advantage in airsoft. Yeah, I'll pass on that. Call me a poser or whatever. I'll be laughing when you have a heatstroke and I don't lol.
Also, those people who get pissy at you for buying from greyshop are just losers lol.
