This is great to watch as I too free up in Aldershot in the 70s and 80s, and after many years away am now living here again!! Today I'm taking the kids to the lido where I spent my summer days..we were so lucky to have a huge outdoor swimming pool around the corner from where we lived in Gloucester Rd!

Thank you Syrierie, I would like to visit Aldershot again some day. I have very fond summer memories of the Lido. Thank you for the comment.

Hi Syrieirie. Just saw this post. I lived in Holly Road and moved to Morland Road when i was four. Spent many hours at the Bathing Pool as we called it. A season ticket was 10 shillings. I used to catch the number 42 bus to the National Schools. Then went to Manor Park. Left in 1963. Got married and left for Australia in 1974 living in Perth. Often wondered about friends and people i knew. Regards to you.

I am just about to watch your video. I have uploaded a few videos of Aldershot. Edgar Jerome, a men's clothing shop, just celebrated 99 years of trading. He has a lovely and unique museum on the top floor.
I am just working on a video that I filmed this morning in Aldershot.

That’s great, got my uniform in Jerome’s and stay press trousers.

Gosh that brings back memories! Grew up here in the sixties, seventies and eighties, moved out in the 1990's, met my husband working at the AEB in Station Road .... mum and dad were married at St Michael's Church (we lived just alone the road ) family in the crematorium. I went to St Michael's (both schools). My granddad had the drugstore at the top of the town near the West End Centre (school as it was then I think)... lovely video, thank you!

Wow thanks Elaine. I remember the drug store, what a small world. I went to the West End Centre in the evenings to a youth theater workshop, loved it so much. Thanks for commenting.

My home town! I lived in Aldershot for many, many years. My last visit was April 22 as I still have family in Aldershot, I have to say tge town centre, like many, is not in good shape sadly. Most odlf the army are no longer in Aldershot with a plethora of new homes along Queens Avenue and area. Thanks for the video!

This is just a lovely video. It has been ages since I have been on a train.
It is very, very frustrating when people are so suspicious about filming. Many years ago, I was just filming a sunset at a railway station. I was informed that I was not allowed to do this. I complied, but had this happened now, I would have said something. Many people choose to make adverse inferences as a consequence of people filming. Look at how many people have created videos about aldershot alone. Filming is indeed not a crime, but it creates suspicion.
Was this filmed when YT would only allow you to upload ten minutes at a time?
I plan to upload an Aldershot video soon. I am just going to watch Part 2 now.
***I really, really hope that you don't take down this video. You have clearly put lots of effort into it.***

Hi Gary. You’re welcome. BTW, the club is called Aldershot Town, not Aldershot FC - the latter club went bust in 1992.

Small world Danny. The more Adershot changes, the more it stays the same yes? Thanks for watching.

Aldershot Town did not compete in Isthmian League Division 3 for 16 years! They were in that division for one year, in division 2 of that league for one year, in division 1 of that league for 4 years and the premier division of that league for five years. They were then in various guises of the Conference for 5 years before gaining promotion to (not back to) the Football League in 2008.

Dave thanks for the great facts behind Aldershot FC. As you can tell, I lived there long ago, but never really followed the team.. When I was back, their re-entry into the premier league was the big news. Went to a few games. My parents shop window was smashed by fans after one game. Aldershot... such fond memories.

Thanks for a great vid. I went to Heron Wood 1971-1975. I would really call it a school? More of a youth detention centre, a holding pen. Somewhere to store all the scummy working class boys before they went of to fill the factories, sweep the streets etc. when I think back to the appalling lack of education it really was scandalous.

    • @GaryStockton
      @GaryStockton  2 года назад

One of my biggest regrets in life was the lack of education gained at Heron Wood. The teachers were too focused on whacking us with T-squares or the cane. I got the cane once for missing homework. I remember being knocked to the ground out of my chair by the English teacher. I remember the music teacher "Woolway" being locked in the supply cupboard and wetting himself, total chaos. At PT over at indoor Lido, I remember smashing my front teeth on the bottom of the pool, badly chipping them and the teacher "Daggett" not doing anything and being in total agony the rest of the day. It was the worst school in the U.K. I wonder sometimes how my life might have turned out if the education had been half decent. I have done alright for myself @Simonet1309 but Heron Wood was as terrible for me as I suspect it was for you.
