To have a fair comparison, you'd have to use the electric properly - in a circular motion. I use my Philips wet - takes a while but no friction against the grain at all after a few passes. It's nice to see people still using the old safety razors. Cheers!
I actually came here for an electric razor review but after watching you I think I'm gonna order one of these vintage style safety razors instead. Thank you, good sir.
After many years of shaving my experience has been that my Norelco provides a closer shave if you take an equal amount of time to shave with both systems. A very light back and forth motion works best. The key is that if you are in a hurry the electric will give a pretty good shave in a much shorter amount of time. But you can't beat a blade for that "Clean Face" feeling!

But it requires no support, no sharpening, no replacements, no preparation, no additional products, and you can do it practically asleep without cutting yourself. It struggles a little around the adam's apple but I can't possibly imagine how anything could be more convenient.
nvshd Hi there it sounds like to me that your shaving heads are not shop anymore and are blunt If you clean them thoroughly or replaced them you would notice the difference in the shaving and performance
I'd also add one complaint: Near the end of my neck area, the grain makes sort of a circle where it grows in every direction. My electric shaver has a big problem dealing with that area. It will always leave 1-2 hairs in that place after many passes.
John Macady you can always get rid of those 2 hairs with a normal blade. The problem is that an electric shaver can't get those two hairs any way or angle you try to shave it. Personally I love the electric shaver, it gets the job done in 3 minutes with no prep and minimal cleanup.

So for my birthday I got a Phillips 1000 eletric shaver and honestly the benefits of this is amazing I don't have to waste money on foam etc. And also it gives me a really close shave when done right so I really prefer the electric shaver

The big thing that people may get on you for barbasol for and even as a beginner to this I can tell from trying gel, shaving foam(cream or whatever you want to call barbasol) and shaving soap is that shaving soaps and creams from a tube will give you a better lubrication and glides on the razor and the barbasol has sulfates in it which can be bad for your skin and the hair underneath. It's not a problem to really use it, but the other stuff does work better.
Kind of a silly comparison. The Norelco/Philips shaver is an Aquatec model, designed for both dry and lather shaving...and it's going to perform best when using a lather. I like Barbasol as well. The stuff came out way back in 1919 and was created with the express purpose of giving people an alternative to brush and lather. I have also tried Taylor of Old Bond Street with a brush but to be honest I can't tell a great difference. The main thing I can tell a big difference in is old fashioned DE razors vs cartridge razors. They just provide a much more comfortable shave, and the blades are way cheaper!
The Norelcos with the HQ8 heads perform much better than the old standard heads, like the shaver used in this video. I don't doubt that a safety razor will outperform an electric -- even with the newer heads. That said, I'm not switching anytime soon. Electrics are very portable, do not require water or soap, decent ones will still shave "good enough," and are far less expensive than safety razors or cartridge razors over time. I tend to get 7-10 years on Norelco rotary shavers, give them a good disassembly and thorough brushing every 3-4 years, blow them out daily, and have never found the need to replace the heads until long after the battery becomes useless or the motor dies, at which point I buy another electric. My first Norelco was a Christmas gift, which lasted me about 9 years before the motor died. My second Norelco lasted about 7 years, and still worked when my GF bought me a new Norelco for Christmas. That one lasted me 11 years, at which point it was lasting maybe 2-3 days on a charge. I bought my most recent Norelco about 5 years ago, for about $60. It's still doing its job. Over the past 30 years, I have had 4 electrics, and paid for 2 of them, a total of less than $100. Add up the prices of the other two, and I estimate perhaps less than $300 spent on shaving, including electricity. Amortized over 30 years, that's less than $10 per year, soup to nuts. After all that, I am still immensely curious about wet shaving. I may try it out at some point, just to see what it's like. Just don't hold your breath, it may still be a while. At a minimum, I probably still have at least 2-3 years left on my current shaver.
Talks to hisself ... humorous ... you are a wonderfully strange and funny man, bro. So tell me, did you have imaginary friends as a kid? Mine was named "Chomby" and that was in the late 50's - long before Pee Wee Harman ripped me off. So I've been shaving with a Gillette Trac II since graduating HS in the mid 70's. I haven't had a safety razor in 50 years. Approaching 70, I'm tired of shaving and often go for days without until the wife complains. The Trac II gets so backed up it I have to clean it with the WaterPik. So I ordered a Norelco 3500 and a Weishi safety razor a couple days ago to knock down the forest before cleaning it up with the Trac II. Sold off all my safety razors about 2 years ago now. Purchased a few straight razors and a hanging strop and haven’t looked back. Straights are really the Rolls Royce of shaving instruments. Now that I’m retired, I can take my time and enjoy the shave.
A wet razor will always give a better shave because the blade is directly on the skin, whereas electric razors have their cutting blade behind a protective shield
@@SinatraLennon I have always understood that the initial cutting blade on an electric razor lifts the hair then as follow up cuts are only milliseconds behind, cut the hair several times again before it retracts below the skin line. It seems you can get a very good close shave with a good electric razor if using the correct technique including the application of a drying powder on skin before use. I'm no authority with electrics though I did own one for a while but went back to wet shaving as I enjoy the 'process' more. One of life's pleasures you might say. Totally enjoyed the video even though I am 6 years late to the party.
I used a Norelco until 2 weeks ago. I already knew before I watched the entire vid that the DE would win. To be fair to Norelco, I had the thing (cheapest corded model) for years and never changed the blade. Philips says you should get a new set yearly but these cost almost as much as the razor. The Norelco never got my neck cleanly and I'd use a disposable razor and Barbasol every once in a while to clean it up.
Is it just me or this satisfying to watch. Lol as a guy who can't grow facial hair I'll never understand how it feels to use either of those on my face
Shaved with a safety razor for the first time just moments ago! My dad has been using the Wilkinson Sword classic for years so I used that as he helped me since it was my first time. And even though i know it is just a beginner's safety razor I feel great now. No cuts too. Never going back to the cartridges! Thank you for the great content sir, great work!
I love my Braun 8595 shaver. I also love wet shaving. And the fact is that I've been combining them for more than 20 years! I do the first pass with the electric shaver and the second one with the razor. That way I minimize skin irritation. I'm not saying it'll work for everyone; just for me.
yes i too think a blade is better BUT watch out for chemicals in the foams/gels i recommend organic natural soap liquid like dr.broners soaps or something else in that direction ...
"In the instructions it recommends shaving your face for several days so that your skin gets used to it." This is why I can't switch - I don't have several days to spend shaving.
great vid. For newbies, there are some starter kits that come with de razor and most of the basics needs depends. in my case in Canada on Amazon the kits wore about 31 to 65$ during prime days that just passed. I also added a few extras that may be missing in the kit, that's just me. the total was about 90 $ Canadian for what I wanted and not make too much of a mess for my first time using it, can't wait
Hi from Russia! I bought the electric shave from AliExpress. You should to wet your skin before shaving, then wipe dry and shave, pull the skin. It will be a smooth shave. Also you can use the foam. I bought the electric shave, because the gillette razors are very expensive and you have to change it very often.
Thank you for your videos! I am a 14 yo who just started shaving and i am super into this! your videos are fascinating and i am learning things my father didn't tell me. I am currently using a Gillette ProGlide but after seeing a couple of your videos i might get a DE razor.
I hope that, if you do try out a safety razor, you like it as much as I do. It really does make shaving more enjoyable! Good luck and let me know how you get along.
Suprisingly i stayed till the video ended haha. Thank you for sharing sir, great video! You should do more topics on how to be a man kinda video, if you could share so much on shaving i wonder what else you would share on other stuff, i would stay and learn :D
Often wondered what it would look like if Jonathan Ross and Nicholas Cage accidentally got stuck in that machine from the film 'The Fly' now I know. Great bid btw
How those work is by inserting into the middle causing a blade to spin around the areas and cut the hairs. You can sort of cut yourself with electric depending on your skin but it is more sores from irritation / dry skin.
I use the Nerlco for my pubic area because I like to keep that area shaven but not completely gone. This helps to avoid ingrown hairs and that awkward uncomfortable regrowth period where it itches as the hairs grow back. This isn't the product for you if you're looking for that smooth freshly wax feel or completely hairless look, but if you prefer to keep it neat and very lowly trimmed then this works great and it's quick.
I grew up in a house of women and while I’ve seen electric razors, I do not comprehend how they work. I have a Master of Science degree and I *do not comprehend how this basic shit works.* I stare at my husbands and all I see is that it vibrates and hair gets all up in the nice, clean sink XD Edit: Finally found a video (Shavershop AU’s Choosing an Electric Razor) that explains it perfectly.
Just used the Braun 3040 foil razor and shaves pretty damn close. I am impressed. I am not going to say better than wet shaving but for me it is the only option as said here before little nicks are hazardous for me and after last one I had to have an operation, yes really, so wet shaving is no longer an option for me if I hope to stay out of hospital and you can do a lot worse than the Braun. I know this may fall on deaf ears but I am saying it anyway. I never realised how dangerous wet shaving could be for some people. I took it for granted as I am sure many do but became very serious for me so if anyone is in the same situation as me then this is an option for you.
I had the same electric razor. Still have it to this day. It was a gift from my father when I graduated in 2013. You can actually take the blades out and clean it. Well, the entire head comes off of the electric razor and is to be replaced within 2 months. I still have the original head it came with in 2013. Oops! Lol
Ok I know this video is old, but I just saw it for the first time so it’s new to me lol. Watching you use that electric razor made my face hurt. I’m so glad I found DE shaving. I would never go back.
Never heard of a safety razor until I stumbled upon your videos and now just ordered one on eBay for $19 with a walnut handle and am ordering a bunch of feather blades for it also ! Thanks for the info so cool
My dad has used an electric my entire life. I bought one about a decade ago and tried to get into using it and it just lights my face on fire. It's been years since I've tried it. I think I'll go put it on the charger now and give it a try this weekend.
@@SinatraLennon, I'm already on it, my man. Been using a safety razor for years. Oddly enough, just now switching to non-canned shave soaps, which is how I found your videos! Thanks for the great content!
My Philips Norelco 6500 Electric Razor gets me a lotta stubble on my face like in the video. It also causes lots of irritation, so I want to switch to a safety razor to see if I can get rid of irritation on my face and neck.
I have 5 different electric shavers including a Babyliss FX3 and Andis Pro Foil shaver. All shave me quite well but none compares to my Bass double edge safety razor.
You must always shave against the grain with a electric shaver. And this guy doesn't do this. So it's no wonder that the result became so poor. I can tell you that a Norelco/Philips series 9000 shaver or a Braun series 7 or series 9 shaver is more smooth than a DE shaver. Except for the neck area. Believe me on that.
When they say to use it a few times for face to get used to it they are referring to the fact that you shave in the opposite direction as you would with a manual razor. It simply suggests to use it a few times to allow skin to adjust to the new pattern in shaving
Agreed, when I used a Norelco it took a lot more passes in all different directions and a lot more soreness and redness until I felt satisfied that I had caught everything, and then I didn't feel like shaving again for several days. For the most part my safety razor feels way better and way faster, and my face recovers quickly enough to be ready to shave again the next day. However, there was one electric razor I did like, that was made by Panasonic and was a wet/dry model so you could actually use it on your wet face which made it easier. But who knows when I'll be able to afford one of those again, or if I'll even bother by then, when double edge blades are so cheap.
For people with Razor bumps and ingrown hairs the best is a beard trimmer! However if you want a close shave , I use an electric shaver to get my longer hairs down to a stubble first! Then I lather with Nivea or Aveeno shave gel. You can use a brush with soap, but I use gel for a faster shave! I use a De Razor against the grain . I can do this because I used an electric shaver first. Your Neck is usually the most prone to irritation, so I shave with that first and then shave the rest. Always use a fresh sharp blade!
Hello this was a really nice video thank you for your thoughts. I am going to permanently shift to shaving with double edge safety razors. They’re the best , quick , effective, environment friendly, also low on my budgets considering how expensive the other alternatives can get with time. Take care hope you’re well , :)
Hey I have that electric shaver! It’s very popular, and definitely a daily shaver that only works on stubble and causes major razor burn on your neck. I think I need to replace the rotary blades.
Hi! As some commenters I look at the video is not fresh but actual! So my subject review: I had 3rd electric shaver vs 1 piece of Gilette Fusion Power 5 safety bladed battery powered manual blade.I hate now the 3 headed electric shavers-not cut so precise, wear fast, the replacement heads expencive.. and the most important: more time for me than the manual blade. The gilette beats high the electric ones, and makes perfect smooth skin (cca 1/3 or max 1/2 time of electric procedure) I will not buy electric again.

A wet razor will always give a better shave because the blade is directly on the skin, whereas electric razors have their cutting blade behind a protective shield
Correct!
This man still gives heart and comment even after 5 years !
It’s the least I can do! Thanks for the comment.
Maybe you can pretend by shaving without the blade in!
I'm really surprised that I enjoyed watching a man shaving. hmm.

did you heard about ASMR channels ??
try searching ASMR on RUclips
I think you'll enjoy what you will find
cmmm
one of the best youtube channels. I'm 20 years old and looking to go into safety razor shaving and I'm so glad i found this !
That’s great! What kind of razor are you looking to buy?
Shaved with a safety razor for the first time just moments ago! My dad has been using the Wilkinson Sword classic for years so I used that as he helped me since it was my first time. And even though i know it is just a beginner's safety razor I feel great now. No cuts too. Never going back to the cartridges! Thank you for the great content sir, great work!
Any recommendations for a first DE razor at a reasonable price are more than welcome!
Electric shavers are good in an emergency situation...
Just don't drive and shave..
robert hingston not gonna lie, I’m guilty of this
Mr Bean is the master of the old drive & shave.
I love my Braun 8595 shaver. I also love wet shaving. And the fact is that I've been combining them for more than 20 years! I do the first pass with the electric shaver and the second one with the razor. That way I minimize skin irritation. I'm not saying it'll work for everyone; just for me.
i was strangely comfortable watching this
yes i too think a blade is better BUT watch out for chemicals in the foams/gels i recommend organic natural soap liquid like dr.broners soaps or something else in that direction ...
FF to 2:47 for relevant content :)
You could do that...But why would you?

This man has such strong chaotic good energy
Chaotic, huh? I’ll take that a as a good thing! Cheers.
The convenience of electric shavers. They don’t even require you to be in the bathroom to use them!
Buy a safety razor and it’s way cheaper and gives you a better shave!
2:30 starts here.. exactly
Thanks to this guy i user safety razors now. I used electric razors and i didnt know there was a difference. I get a way better shave now. Thank you!
Glad to help!
Often wondered what it would look like if Jonathan Ross and Nicholas Cage accidentally got stuck in that machine from the film 'The Fly' now I know. Great bid btw
This might be my favorite comment ever.
How those work is by inserting into the middle causing a blade to spin around the areas and cut the hairs. You can sort of cut yourself with electric depending on your skin but it is more sores from irritation / dry skin.
saul does this in his free time😭
And it’s all legal!
This guy is my second dad ;-)
I really needed this lol I really couldn’t see how the electric could shave thank you!! Will get a razor instead for him!
He’ll love you even more for it! Good choice.
I grew up in a house of women and while I’ve seen electric razors, I do not comprehend how they work. I have a Master of Science degree and I *do not comprehend how this basic shit works.* I stare at my husbands and all I see is that it vibrates and hair gets all up in the nice, clean sink XD
Edit: Finally found a video (Shavershop AU’s Choosing an Electric Razor) that explains it perfectly.
Your voice reminds me of Walter White from Breaking Bad and Mike Row from Dirty Jobs lol
I had the same electric razor. Still have it to this day. It was a gift from my father when I graduated in 2013. You can actually take the blades out and clean it. Well, the entire head comes off of the electric razor and is to be replaced within 2 months. I still have the original head it came with in 2013. Oops! Lol
I still use mine when I’m too lazy to shave with a razor or if I don’t have time to shave. Not too bad, but not my preferred method.
"What mystery lyes within? Ah HA! Still a mystery...anyways" lol
Louie Gee lies*. Fucking dumbass.
Awesome video friend. The reason is cos Razor takes of the top layer skin where as electric doesn't.
Almost 600k views 0.0 Da*n son!!! Nice work.
Crazy, right?! I never had any idea that it would be watched this much.
This dude is great! Nothing beats an actual razor 🪒
Thanks!
this guy when he speaks seems like Tom Hanks from Cast Away. Great video though!
Ok I know this video is old, but I just saw it for the first time so it’s new to me lol. Watching you use that electric razor made my face hurt. I’m so glad I found DE shaving. I would never go back.
I recommend safety razor.
Never heard of a safety razor until I stumbled upon your videos and now just ordered one on eBay for $19 with a walnut handle and am ordering a bunch of feather blades for it also ! Thanks for the info so cool
That’s cool! Let me know how it goes.
Great vid!
My dad has used an electric my entire life. I bought one about a decade ago and tried to get into using it and it just lights my face on fire. It's been years since I've tried it. I think I'll go put it on the charger now and give it a try this weekend.
After you try the electric, buy a safety razor!
@@SinatraLennon, I'm already on it, my man. Been using a safety razor for years. Oddly enough, just now switching to non-canned shave soaps, which is how I found your videos! Thanks for the great content!
wrong manner of use with the rotary shaver..circular motion
Says the Asian female shut up
I guess you've just become my hero of the day. Shaving with an electric razor takes lots of self-denial.
Why do people use the safety razors to shave? Why doesn't everybody use the electric one?
Nice, isn't there a silent elective shaver?
Ahhh ok
leaves red marks on my face
My Philips Norelco 6500 Electric Razor gets me a lotta stubble on my face like in the video. It also causes lots of irritation, so I want to switch to a safety razor to see if I can get rid of irritation on my face and neck.
...i was searching razer as in the mouse brand
Fatboy wins!
ShaveNontheDarkside be nice
Humorous and actually pretty interesting video, thanks man for the info 5 years after upload
You’re welcome, and thanks!
I think that with that type of razor it is most appropriate to make circular motions in order to get a better shave.
I like the comparison you made, thank you, saved me some money avoiding me to purchase the electric razor for my boyfriend :-)
Wow. Thank you!! I found this video very interesting. I’m a teenager about to shave for the first time and this video really helped!
That’s great! Good luck with your shave. It’s not so scary once you do it for a while.
Good luck in your new shaving journey!
Hey I have that electric shaver! It’s very popular, and definitely a daily shaver that only works on stubble and causes major razor burn on your neck. I think I need to replace the rotary blades.
There are tricks to sharpen the blades.
Electric rotary razor is good enough for me most of the time, but nothing beats the closeness of a safety razor shave.
I actually bought a double edge razor after seeing your videos. hope to continue in future.
Let me know how it works for you! Good luck.
I think you might just be the most chill guy on the internet.
Good ol faithful. 60 years still going strong. Love the videos man.
