    I will admit that this was the most comprehensive drumming overview. You covered all genres and their greatest contributors. WOW. Great episode. Perhaps I can add one to this fabulous list. NRBQ had a drummer by the name of Tom Ardolino who had a beautiful percussive style and brought it to the varied set list that NRBQ played. The same set you could hear Bye Ya. And Rocket in my pocket.

The table was right in front of where Chet sat in the chair and pointed his horn down between his legs and his playing just sucked me in. Great video, Ken. And lots of great calls. I do have to disagree with your claims about Charlie though; not least because Honky Tonk Women was a good 2 years before Sticky Fingers. You mentioned most of my faves, including Copeland who I thought was the most exciting drummer on the planet in the early 80's.
    Any thoughts on Joe Morello, Ken?
    Despite the resurgence of jazz on vinyl, Brubecks music seems to get barely any attention in the VC (apart from the occasional mention of "Time Out".) If anything Paul Desmond has more cache these days, because of his CTI records.

    • @kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455
      @kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455  2 месяца назад +1

      Call Desmond was brilliant. I believe he actually wrote take five. The compared to the other music being made at the time Brubeck to me was rather sterile. Joe Morello was a good drummer, but again sort of pale compared to the other greats of the era. Who wouldn’t?

    Check out the great interviews with the wonderful Mel Lewis by Loren Schoenberg on youtube. Mel said Roy Haynes was playing at time like Elvin in the 1940s. Way over the barline, primarily when Mel saw him live. Mel said the recordings generally were much more conservative on recordings vs live. Roy Haynes would also fill in with Coltrane if Elvin was out. Roy fit perfectly on Trane's live at Newport '63.

    Nice analysis, Ken. You missed Paul Motian's favourite drummer ruclips.net/video/dPfTjgc0wN4/видео.html . I could not really following the first 7 or 8 minutes about rock drummers as I did not know most of them apart from one or two. When It comes to Led Zeppelin, I am in the 'Willie Dixon camp'. My view is that as well as for plagiarism he should have also sued them for murdering so many old blues songs. I agree generally with your choices. One of my favourite current drummers is Herlin Riley of New Orleans whose technique goes right back to Baby Dodds and the dawn of jazz, but he could fit in with Ahmad Jamal, Wynton Marsalis, Bill Frisell and, recently, Emmet Cohen. Another great New Orleans drummer was Leo Morris aka Idris Muhammad who could play jazz and a number of other genres. Keep up the great work. You are one of the best informed jazz commentators on RUclips.
