The Titan is the best of both..tames the harshness of the Nazgul..tightens the low end of the Pegasus..sounds a bit more refined overall than the SDs..
Great video. The tone was really clear, and I liked how you kept the big headings in the upper right corner so it was easy to click back and forth between the different thumbnails when you wanted to hear a particular pickup. I'm a Pegasus guy myself: clarity and attack win out over compression any day for me.
fantastic comparison video! I've actually been dying for someone to compare these 3 pickups, my dream come true, lol! I have a set of Dimarzio Titans and plan on outfitting another of my guitars with a Pegasus/Sentient. Having played these pickups yourself, how did you like the Pegasus, pros/cons?
Thanks Dude! Can't name any major cons about the Pegasus. I really like the amount of clarity you get when playing disorted wide chords or fast riffs. Especially compared to the Nazgul which produces a lot high fizz. With the Pegasus I found it much easier to keep my riffs tight an not muddy. Still it's able to deliver very aggressive tones. I think it's a perfekt pickup for all kinds of modern/melodic/progressive metal. Still gotta say that I liked the tone of the Titan most. It has that kind of "bite" that I really enjoy. But I think that's just a question of taste.
thanks for the feedback! yeah, the Titan is a cool pickup for sure and I've enjoyed my Titan set quite a bit in my LTD. I think what I'm interested in for the Pegasus is a modern tight, clear, but also more 'musical/dynamic' sound. I feel like the Titan has the first two qualities but I think the Pegasus seems to be able to provide a more 'pleasant/dynamic' sound so I'm willing to give it a try in my Ibanez sometime soon.
Hey! How are the titans for versatilty? I want pick ups that cn do more than shread and djent. Its my only guitar (nyato body + maple neck + Jotoba fretboard). I want good cleans as well. With these high output PUs, I'm worried of them sounding muddy. What can you tell me from your experience? Thanks
@@rohanjangam511 The titans are very versatile. Paired in a body with those woods it should do great as nyatoh is extremely similiar to mahogany- the other two woods mentioned also pair well with it. The titans are not considered high out-put, they're more medium to a medium-high output pickup. They have great clarity and personally some of my favourite split-coil sounds. Something to note is they are a pickup you have to set at a good height for them to sound right. A few who've installed them noted they didnt like the sound until they raised the height enough and then they sounded amazing.
my take: the nazgul has good low end and mids but always feels too compressed and a little dark, the pegasus is less compressed but muddy in context and a little too loose on the low end for this style, while the titans has both the right amount of compression, high end and balanced mids. i'd go with the titan for a pickup with this style
These are the exact same pickups I was deciding between! I'm going for the Pegasus; I'm a sucker for high end and love the note clarity it packs as well. Good shit man thanks alot!
As an owner of a 7 string pegasus set it pains me to say it, but the Titan sounds really good lol. Just dont know if it's good enough to make me wana switch teams
i like the Pegasus best personally but it was very close between that and the titan. the nazgul, while still good sounding, is a little to in your face for my liking.
I also love the Pegasus/Sentinents the most for the clarity, and they also seems to be capable of heavy styles If I am not mistaken. Would be interesting to compare them with Hot rodded SD's.
Personally the Titans don't have the clarity or string separation the others do. They sound good, but it seemed like there was a loss in 'liveliness' I suppose? Thought I would try a few videos to get different perspectives, on, on, onto the next one!
I agree, which is strange to me coming from Dimarzio, I thought they usually have clarity and separation in exchange for being more compressed sounding at time to my ears.
Oh nice, I have the same guitar in 8 string. Banshee's are pretty sweet. I'd love to get one in 6 to complement it. They discontinued these ones a couple years ago, wonder what they go for these days.
Am I the only one that thinks the Pegasus is the easily their favorite of these? And I didn't even think it was going to be. I was walking into this thinking it was gonna be the Titan lol
I've tried all three myself and the Pegasus is definitely still my favorite. I'd even say it's my favorite pickup so far. The clarity of the chords under high gain says it all.
I've owned all three pickups twice. Got rid of the nazgul twice. Loved the pegasus but was ok with getting rid of them twice. Lol I still have both sets of titans. Can't bring myself to let them go.
which would be best for this music that you are palying, and then also I like to play Deathcore/Metalcore, etc. I also like cleans and stuff but I care more for distortion and clarity and tightness. I was looking for the Titan but I also really like the Pegasus sound! SO I am between the Pegasus and Titan.
The Pegasus wins big. Clearer and more musical than the others. All three are pretty nice, although I expected to like the Titan more. There's a little too much extra nastiness on the notes.
Pegasus just has that warm overtone and brightness for low tunings and high. Naz just makes me hear the cannibal sound and who wants to copy someone else’s recipe.
This seems like splitting hairs listening to this tone. The chugging at the end probably showed the differences most clearly - the titan and the pegasus seem to have more pronounced low end compared to the nazgul. Some cleans would have been good.
The Titans are amazing from what I have heard of them. Periphery is an awesome band and have an awesome sound. I was looking at the Evolution series and the JS series DiMarzio pickups but seriously thinking about getting the Titans instead. I am going to put them in an Ibanez RG470 which has V7-S7-V8 pickups. The bridge pickup is just to thin sounding. I want more roundness to the notes when using the neck pickup. I also have a baritone Ibanez with active pickups that I would like to switch out at some point. I think the Titans would be a good choice.
Hey, its me again. Do you remember if the Pegasus was as tight as the Titan? I currently have a set of Titans but I feel their top-end is a little chopped for the particular guitar. Pegasus in this video seems a little brighter but I'm not sure... Titan is tighter & more focused?
I found the Pegasus to have a slightly tighter overall tone (esp. low-end) than the Titan. But I'm not sure if the Pegasus will deliver the top-end that you're missing with the Titan. It's tighter but I enjoyed the Titans tone a bit more for it was 'crispier' which is why I kept it in this guitar. I think it's also a question of your guitar which pickups sound best/most suited for your style.
Honestly, I don't remember the settings, since it was 4 years ago. I remember using an Ibanez TS-9 (Drive at 0, Level at full, Tone in the middle) in front of the amp.
I dont think the amp is the only thing to consider. By telling you he uses a TS9 with gain at 0, i think you can gain aggressiveness by raising a bit the gain on your boost and pulling it down on the amp. The amount of gain comming out will be even tighter if you do it right
Since nothing will sound as detailed as in-person/real-life, would you know if the Titan will be too bright in a Strat in E-Standard? I want to keep my traditional tones in the middle & neck position but if I have to, I'll go to D-standard.
I never tried the Titan in a Strat but I used it for some recordings in a Fender Jazzmaster with Drop Db tuning (Db Ab Db Gb Bb Eb) and the result was very solid. I think you can also use a higher tuning without getting a too bright tone. It produces a killer sound that doesnt depend on the pitch. Still I feel like the true benefits of the Titan dont become obvious until you use some lower tuning with distortion where other pickups often have the problem of getting too muddy.
Hey man, thanks for the video, nice job! I have a question, which one of these pick up produce the most modern and djenty tone in combination with a Mahogany body?!
Thanks dude! I had all of them in my Epiphone Les Paul which has a mahagony body and neck. I don't remember which pickup was the djentiest in the guitar, but I definitely liked the Titan most. Even more than in the Schecter I used in this video. It had a very punchy, aggressive and also very clear tone.
Honestly came back to this video after a couple of years. Assuming nothing has changed in the amp, cab and mic at all, they sound at most 2-3% different
Awesome demo, great playing......Usually I'd say dm is greater than sd.... .but I m really loving the nazgul best here....I have it in a 7 and it's awesome.....I like the Titan, but the price tag is to high for what it does, but if I'm playing a six , I'd be using a super 3, a di activator or a megadrive, and I still don't understand the appeal of the pegusus....though I have yet to play a neck pickup by sd I like, I have the sentient with my nazgul and a black winter on another guitar and they are aweful... seems like the pegusus is better in the neck position as bright as it is .but the di activator and super 2 are the greatest neck pickups ever for me, bright single coil like, high output humbuckers
The pegasus and nazgul are more expensive than the titan though... titan goes for $85 whereas the peg and naz are $99. Plus, the pegasus is a bridge pickup as well it's not voiced for the neck position, its paired with the sentient for the neck. The pegasus is just the alnico version of the nazgul. Nazgul and titan are ceramic. But of course those prices i stated are for the 6 string versions. Not sure about the 7s. I've owned the nazgul and pegasus in 6, and I hated the nazgul for anything lower than drop D tuning. It had a nasal honk that I just couldn't unhear once I noticed it, no matter which guitars i threw it in. I got rid of it. I absolutely loved the pegasus. The most balanced pickup I've ever played in terms of clarity, and string separation. Left it in a guitar i traded off and I've missed it every day since. I recommend giving the peg a try. Only if you run a high gain amp or have a tube screamer type of in front of your tube amp though since it's a tad lower output.
@@bradhargis2261 wow ur right, I bought the naz/sent set and it came out cheaper....but ya now that u say that, I'm noticing sd pups are generally more expensive than dm.....as for pegusus not being good in the neck, I have seen tone zones, full shreds, and x2ns in the neck position and work well, so the pegusus should work there, in theory
Hmm ... Since the Pegasus is only built for the bridge position, you could do Pegasus bridge and Titan neck. I never tried the Titan in the neck but in the bridge I liked it way more than the Pegasus. You could definitely try to use a Pegasus in the neck, even though it is not build for that. It will have a higher output than normal but I think it has a lot of the qualities you would expect from a good neck pickup (dynamic and articulate).
@@JV8901 Jesus.... I don’t see the debate here. Means it’s more suited for modern pop (metal) stuff, as opposed to old school, lesser known, harsher metal genres
Titan gets my vote. I like its tightness and clarity. and i know for a fact many will not choose the Titan because it is a dimarzio! IF you would have just posted the sounds without naming what was what i think many would have voted differently.
There are people who don't like DiMarzio!? Maybe they just don't like the players who tend to use them (their music) not them as people of course. i.e. Petrucci satch vai gilbert etc.
Very few pickups are actually handwound, 95% are wound by machine/winder There are a couple of winders that will wind a p'u completely by hand, I have a pure handwound by ZHANGBUCKER and to be honest it is not a day/night difference compared to a machine wound one.
My experience with pickups is similar. It doesn't matter how they are wound as long as they sound good. Suhr is an excellent excample of this; they make machine wound pickups, yet they are preferred by many. Handwound or not, I'm yet to find pickups that have bested my stock Caparison pickups. :-)
I love this comment section. Titans sound the clearest... Five comments later, Titans have the least clarity 🤣🤣🤣 I guess the takeaway is buy whatever you're going to buy, because you're going to EQ it to your liking anyway!
Sick Riffs! I know Im late but your demo has, by far, the best comparison. My opinions have been vindicated on these three. The Nazgul is a bit harsh but that isnt a bad thing, i can see it working in a few realms of extreme metal. The Pegasus is well rounded pickup and does well enough to cover a lot of fusion metal genres with its mids raised. However, the Titan, I feel, covers everything a tad bit better, with its tight bass and overall string response. I wish I had three guitars to permanently install these pickups in.
Thanks! I really appreciate that. Your description pretty much matches my experiences with them. The Titan was also my favourite. Actually, it's still my favourite pickup of all.
Dimarzio for the win. All sound great in their own way, but DiMarzio has always done a great job of being a bit more clear and silencing unwanted noises.
If i'm going for a metal rhythm similar to sylosis in standard tuning, which of these three pickups would be best? or if you have another option you think would be better.
Out of those three I would recommend the Titan or maybe the Nazgul. The Nazgul sounds very aggressive when playing heavy rhythms but you may find it too fizzy in the high end. You still could give it a try if you've got a warm sounding guitar like a Les Paul. In my opinion the Titan has just the perfekt amount of both clarity and agressiveness but also produces a very modern 'Djenty' sound that you may not like if you strive for a more thrash metal sound. The Pegasus may just not sound heavy enough but on the other side delivers the clearest tone. Another pickup that I also really like would be the DiMarzio D Activator which was made to sound like an active pickup. And since Josh from Sylosis is using active EMGs (57/66 set) this should definitely take you in the right direction. If you are going for a more classic thrash tone (e.g. Megadeth) you could also try the Seymour Duncan JB or Distortion (more aggressive).
Very helpful comment. The easiest way to describe my style is sylosis mixed with erra. I'm mainly a rhythm player like josh with heavy thrash influence and speed chugging but I throw in a lot of string skipping/sliding like erra. I play mainly sylosis style but I love to play djent as well.
I think in that case the Titan should really be a good solution for you. I would recommend it almost for every modern metal guitarist. My only concern was its modern sound but since you also mentioned Erra this should not be a problem for you.
If you think about the Nazgul, get an EMG 81, it does everything what that does only better and sounds better if you like that sound. Else I agree with the D-Activator and JB. A TB-6 is also a nice choice.
Haha do you hold your pick like Misha used to or am I just too sleepy right now? Great comparsion video btw. I cannot wait for my JBM27 with DiMarzio 'Tightens' to arrive soon
Thanks! Yeah, the JBM27 is surely an awesome guitar. I hold my pick with my middle finger and thumb instead of index finger and thumb. I don't know how Misha used to hold it, would be funny if he did it the same way :D
Low = pegasus Mid = titan High = nazgul For everyone that haven't watch lord of the rings movies yet, they will never understand how great the NAZGUL is 🤘🏼
It is really interesting and awesome that man become more and more like whom he admires or like, his sound exactly reminds me of that of periphery. Great video dude!
@The Gatekeeper For some reason I cannot answer your comment directly. I think you won't go wrong with any of them. They are both designed for wide clean tones as well as heavy but tight aggressive tones (I think one guitarist in the Band Thy Art Is Murder is using the Pegasus). There may only be subjective arguments for/against the Pegasus/Titan. The Titan has just a kind of "bite" in its sound that I personally like a little more, especially when playing wide but distorted chords (e.g. beginning of "Mile Zero" by Periphery: ruclips.net/video/dz3E_JNW4oU/видео.html ). Still I have the impression that the Pegasus has a minimally more neutral basic sound and its tone is maybe a little easier to adjust for your personal needs.
i would be more interested in the pegasus but the titan seems to yes, have that extra bite to it, like the nazgul, but im kinda eh about the nazgul :/ because i have tried it and was again, eh about it.
For me I'd get nazguls for low tuning aggressive riffs, they sound beasty. probably on a 7 string 26.5+ scale length. Like drop A# and lower. If I had to get it on a 6 string guitar... It'd have to be on a shorter scale length to compensate for the brightness, so maybe a 24 - 24.75 scale length in high tunings, Drop D - Drop B. As shorter scale length naturally adds a more warmer tone with good string tension. Pegasus I think also works well for that sort of range too... 7 string, low tunings. But it also is alot nicer for big chords and it's a little more smoother, less harsher, and the notes are much more bigger when they all ring out... so I think for chords, lead, and also for both Low and High Tunings it would be very well rounded. I'd probably get Pegasus on a 6 string 25.5 in any tuning or a 7 string. It's very well rounded Titans... I have no idea, they might be slightly better then Pegasus for chords, but in the riffs it sounds a little to dark for my liking
the pegasus sounds better , but having this pick up , it sound more alive due to the lack of gain , the pegasus does not have balls for metal , I don't want a pick up I have to throw so much gain at it to sound metal
initially i got the nazgul for gain/overdrive tones, but the cleans sound great as well, i combine with the stock gibson neck pickup and man, i gotta say. Love the tone
I gotta go with the Titan on this one as well....the opening sounded ASS with the Nazgul only a tad bit better with the Pegasus.....would have liked to hear cleaner playing but it is what it is....STILL a Seymour Duncan supporter...
For me... Palm muted chugs: Titan>Nazgul>Pegasus Single notes: Pegasus>Nazgul>Titan Chords: Nazgul>Titan>Pegasus Personally, I like the Nazgul the most.
A pickup demo video obviously only shows a part of its sound. A big part is how the pickup sounds and feels when you're playing it by yourself which obviously can't be shown in a video. Also it's not about making the pickups sound as different a possible but about demonstrating them in the same preconditions to point out the (small) differences.
If only Seymour Duncan made the Pegasus slanted for multiscale 7 strings.. Then I definitely would have the Pegasus sentient set in my Jackson multiscale 7
Three great pickups, for me personally, Pegasus for all around metal pickup, Nazgul for just straight up snarl and nastiness. The titan seems somewhere between the two and it sounds really good, but i don't think i'd pick it over either of the SD
I seriously want to smash the Pegasus with a hammer, its too "Bright" for my ears. Everything you let ring/chording sounded better on the Nazgul, the Titan is just too tight for me, Jake Bowmen isn't going to like me saying this but the Titan is a Fear Factory pickup if I ever heard one lol...
The Titan is the best of both..tames the harshness of the Nazgul..tightens the low end of the Pegasus..sounds a bit more refined overall than the SDs..
I agree.
WhiteFeather same here
I heard they're modeled after the bkp aftermath, I had the aftermath and it sounds similar to your description. I actually didn't like the pegasus.
And sounds like a sterile active EMG
You’re hearing with your eyes and not your ears so to speak.
Pegasus sounds great to me, has enough going on to do more than just metal.

Awesome video man! I like how you used all the different types of playing to really get a feel for the pickups! :D
Thanks man! :)
looks like I've settled on the Nazgul/Sentient set for my RG. thanks for the well done vid. :)
Let’s be honest, they all sound good
dimarzio titan wins to me, very clear pickup on cleans and distortion, great video man

I have an LTD F-50 and I'm looking for a new pickup. Does anybody have experience with the Pegasus or Nazgul in Basswood guitars?
I have a Nazgul, it's not fun to play. I replaced it with a Distortion, which is much more enjoyable. The Nazgul has weak, weak palm mutes.
Great guitar, I have SD JBs in my f50. Amazing for the price
What do you think about a pegasus and titan combo
Titan sounded more defined, tighter, noted popped more, overall better pickup.
Sounds to modern to me
@@idontgivea1769 What does, “too modern” even means?
@@JV8901 Jesus.... I don’t see the debate here. Means it’s more suited for modern pop (metal) stuff, as opposed to old school, lesser known, harsher metal genres
@@idontgivea1769 wasn’t debating, just wanted to know what you meant by that.
Titan gets my vote. I like its tightness and clarity. and i know for a fact many will not choose the Titan because it is a dimarzio!
IF you would have just posted the sounds without naming what was what
i think many would have voted differently.
There are people who don't like DiMarzio!? Maybe they just don't like the players who tend to use them (their music) not them as people of course. i.e. Petrucci satch vai gilbert etc.
People think that they are bad becauce they arent hand wound
Very few pickups are actually handwound,
95% are wound by machine/winder
There are a couple of winders that will wind a p'u completely by hand,
I have a pure handwound by ZHANGBUCKER and to be honest it is not a day/night difference compared to a machine wound one.
My experience with pickups is similar. It doesn't matter how they are wound as long as they sound good. Suhr is an excellent excample of this; they make machine wound pickups, yet they are preferred by many. Handwound or not, I'm yet to find pickups that have bested my stock Caparison pickups. :-)
Do you know who manufactures the Caparison pu's?
I never even knew they had their own pu's,
always thought they used Duncans or EMG.
All sound great in their own way, but DiMarzio has always done a great job of being a bit more clear and silencing unwanted noises.
the pegasus sounds a bit like a tamed BK Coldsweat to me. If you guys want that BK sound, go for the pegasus for sure.
What's a good pickup height for nazgul?
David suzuki play around and find out.
is the first riff from any song or is it an original? it sounds amazing
It's a riff by myself, so thanks man! It belongs to a song that I'm working on for an upcoming band project.
+Pinghost thanks for the reply, it sounds like periphery
Yeah, Periphery are definitely a huge influence for me
Piano like guitar (with real distortion), a Guitar with keyboard clarity (the balance of strings to each other) the "Pegasus"
I play mainly sylosis style but I love to play djent as well.
my only concern is having too much saturation and not enough clarity, but the opposite may be just as bad.
A TB-6 is also a nice choice.
awesome thanks 🙂
is the nazgul a trembucker?
The Nazgul is available as a trembucker. However in this case I used the standard version.
0:01 vs 0:28 vs 0:55
Haha do you hold your pick like Misha used to or am I just too sleepy right now?
Great comparsion video btw. I cannot wait for my JBM27 with DiMarzio 'Tightens' to arrive soon
Thanks!
Yeah, the JBM27 is surely an awesome guitar.
I hold my pick with my middle finger and thumb instead of index finger and thumb. I don't know how Misha used to hold it, would be funny if he did it the same way :D
What guitar are you playing the Titans on ???
It's a Schecter Banshee 6.
Which song is this , it's amazing
Thanks! It's a song I'm working on that I haven't released yet.
Low = pegasus
Mid = titan
High = nazgul
For everyone that haven't watch lord of the rings movies yet, they will never understand how great the NAZGUL is 🤘🏼
🤘
It's very well rounded
Titans... I have no idea, they might be slightly better then Pegasus for chords, but in the riffs it sounds a little to dark for my liking
Dude great demo.
I like the Titan and the Nazgul... not so big on the Pegasus here. Thanks for the demo.
First 2 notes sound like killswitch-My Curse
Are all these passive?
Yes they are.
They all sound killer. But the Naz is the seriel killer.
the pegasus sounds better , but having this pick up , it sound more alive due to the lack of gain , the pegasus does not have balls for metal , I don't want a pick up I have to throw so much gain at it to sound metal
Rad guitar and good play through
titan all day every day
The winner is your taste of sound. For me, Titan sounds pretty well here.
Just ordered my nazgul and sentient. Love the sound for chugging and solos sound nice!
initially i got the nazgul for gain/overdrive tones, but the cleans sound great as well, i combine with the stock gibson neck pickup and man, i gotta say. Love the tone
Surprised so many people prefer the Pegasus. For me it’s just way too “screamy”. There’s this constant high-end hissing going on.
djent,Djentier,DJENTIEST 😵
Hit up the sky & Rakkhi. Mind blowing Initiative...
I gotta go with the Titan on this one as well....the opening sounded ASS with the Nazgul only a tad bit better with the Pegasus.....would have liked to hear cleaner playing but
it is what it is....STILL a Seymour Duncan supporter...
The sound is so harsh it's hard to hear anything.
alder... deine ep ist ja mega nice :x! Hab da auch gesehen, dass du ein Deutscher bist ... Wirklich fett!
Vielen dank! Freut mich, wenns jemandem gefällt :D
All great but Nazgul is the best for me
For me...
Palm muted chugs:
Titan>Nazgul>Pegasus
Single notes:
Pegasus>Nazgul>Titan
Chords:
Nazgul>Titan>Pegasus
Personally, I like the Nazgul the most.
1 Titan
2 Pegasus
3 Nazgul
the Pegasus has way to much going on in harmonic overtones sounds messy
i think i cud get all of those sounds from one set of pups by changing string and or pickup height
0:01, 0:28, 0:56
for your style the pegasus blew the others away. more clarity and fullness. the naz is great for deathmetal and titan for powermetal.
2:35. 4:15
Holy Diver - Bare Knuckle
I prefer the Titan.
I seriously want to smash the Pegasus with a hammer, its too "Bright" for my ears. Everything you let ring/chording sounded better on the Nazgul, the Titan is just too tight for me, Jake Bowmen isn't going to like me saying this but the Titan is a Fear Factory pickup if I ever heard one lol...
for me pegasus and titan are tied for first, with the nazgul being too tight.
Pegasus, easily. The Nazgul is too bright, and the Titan too modern.
Titan all the way
pegasus is morre articulate. but the titan is even more. ahahahah nazgul is too Hot.
Titan wins this for me.
When it comes to Djent I prefer Nazgul no question.
Too much distortion for chords buddy. Dial it back a bit and be surprised.
Hmm..tie between Titan and Nazgul
