Pegasus sounds a little less overdriven and compressed, it lets strings to breath more and it kinda works for that chordy stuff. But on palm-muted single note riffs it's Nazgul for sure. I'll still go for Pegasus since it seems more versatile, esp. for crunchy/clean stuff.
That was rad as hell. Personally, I use the Pegasus as it's the only thing that makes sense for me as a guitar player. You see, because I'm in an MLP themed metal band. We literally have a horse on vocals, it's pretty fucking sweet. So far we've only played a couple shows at my uncle's ranch, but we'll be big news soon. You can count on that.
Sulfur Polaris Fox You ever watch MLP? Those horses are great singers. Celestia totally should have replaced Anette Olzon as Nightwish's lead vocalist.
I can only speak for the Pegasus, as I have been playing it for 3 years. It is not a forgiving pickup. As in you really have to be accurate. That being said, it is a great pickup. I personally like that it is tight, but you still get the juiciness from the Alnico 5 and it cuts really well. It is slightly scooped (and I mean slightly) and that really helps let the bass guitar in your mix cut through and keeps everything tidy in the mid range. It is also pretty responsive to volume knob changes which is really important to me. And it has a unique growl to it to. Super versatile pickup. This comparison really lets the Pegasus shine in it's natural state. The Nazgul seems rad too, but I have never really been a fan of ceramic pickups, though I understand their place.
Amazing comparison and song bro! Both pickups sounds great. Nazgûl for brootal riffs and chugs and Pegasus for perfect chord and single note separation.
I feel the Nazgul had more hair on the low end while the Pegasus kept it trim. For the midrange the Pegasus gave me 2 scoops, where the Nazgul only gave me one. The bottom end of the top end ended up topping the bottom of the Pegasus but I gotta say the Nazgul topped the bottom end better without bottoming out the top of the top end. I think if you're considering buying either one of these you're going to need money.
They both sound really similar tbh. It was actually kinda hard to tell the difference, but I think that the Pegasus has slightly more clarity than the Nagul. I like to shred kinda often so the Pegasus is perfect for me
I use the Nazgûl in my 30' Baritone and the Pegasus for my 27' 7 string. Both work really well, the Pegasus has a rather unique growl and grit to it, as well as being really tight on the low end. Both have there uses, the Nazgûl wins in terms of raw power and well sick name. Aewsome riffs and cheers.
I put a Pegasus Sentient set in my 6 string baritone and really like how it sounds. I'm debating if I want to try the Nazgul in an 8 string for djenty stuff or go to Pegasus again. In your experience with both which would you reccomend?
Dude sick video man, thanks for the comparison. Based on the website I was about to get the pegasus but after this video, I now rock the Nazgul/sentient set. Couldn't be happier. This is coming from a diehard BKP and Dimarzio fan boy (rocked em for 22 years). Couldn't be happier having these as my first Seymour duncan set.
That demo had some quality heavy in it. Picked up a Pegasus and was curious to see what it's tonal properties were before I put it in. I think I'll be pleased.
I think it's funny how some people on here (mainly one) complain about the gain being too high and a lack of dynamics. lol That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I don't know about anyone else but after hearing and playing high gain music for over 13 years it would be absolutely redundant to monitor the tonal differences in two medium-high to high gain pickups in a non high gain situation. These were both designed by Keith Merrow for high gain playing and even he favors the high gain setup in his own demos of it. Plus, playing doesn't need to have noticeable dynamics to be good or skillful ot to have "good tone". People like John Petrucci and many others compress their signal to the point of obsession or don't vary their picking a lot because dynamics can take away from your tone as much as add to it. Having peaks and drops all the time in a song isn't necessary to hold an audience. Some people like and want less dynamic picking and playing style. Some people (ignorant people) call someone like this guy's tone/playing having a "lack of dynamics", some people see it as having "consistency". Just figured I'd throw that out there. To be honest almost all medium to high gain pickups sound almost the same at lower gain. You can only really hear how they really differentiate in tone when the gain is piled on. That's when you can tell whether they turn to crap or really shine through the mix. Like a set of binoculars. Some produce images clearer at closer distances and some produce images clearly regardless of how magnified it is. But you can never tell where the clarity stops until you've tested the limits of it's maximum output. +Pete Graves you are a pimp. ;) Keep the metal alive and only listen to the people that support you. I got your back any day. We have similar playing styles. ;)
Well, the same (mainly one) seems to believe that we should all change genre so we can use more dynamics, lol. I agree that Rachmaninov has more dynamics and I love listening to him but that hasn't decreased my love for metal for 40 years now. I am not really sure what the person is doing in a Nazgul/Pegaus demo anyway. To think that these high output pickups for 7- and even 8-string instruments are simple to do and all the same is rather silly. A lot of pickups would turn to mud and not provide equal output across the strings besides the huge tonal difference. Thanks a lot PeteyG for a great song, awesome playing and nice demo that helped me settle for the Nazgul because I think extra tonal separation of the Pegasus makes it sound too dry. Cheers!
Just wanna put it out there that note definition and clarity isn't always the best way to go... my mates are all into prog metal and they like really clear pickups... shit that makes every note in a chord stand out, but I am a more deathcore and death metal player so I like high output pickups that really saturate a chord... Makes chords sound like one big note with harmonic overtones, rather than a thin collections of notes where none dominate. idk just my two cents
It does depend on what you play. Back when I was more of a thrash player I loved my EMGs that saturated every note and made everything sound big and glued together. But now I play a more progressive style and use more complex chords, and having a pickup like that makes it just sound confusing, so a pickup that's nice and clear helps there.
No lie, man, not only was that some sick playing, but I was going back and forth between which of these go get for my S, and you sold me completely on the Pegasus. Cheers, man.
Hard decision! The Nazgul obviously has more "power" and the Pegasus is more tight. I personally thought the Pegasus went better in mix but solo'd was just so weak and thin. I'm trying to find a nice bridge pup that has a lot to do with how you play. Some songs I composed need tight single not lines on my 8 string and others use palm mutter chugs. I am so conflicted :(
I been a Black Winter devotee for six years. I love it but couldn’t find it in 7 on Amazon. So I got a Nazgul 7 for my new kit. It’s gonna be my only 7, so I hope it can hang and bang with a Black Winter. Otherwise, it will go.
I have the Nazgul in my 7 right now but I'm probably going to be getting a new one soon that has the Pegasus installed. glad to know It won't be a huge difference. I actually think I like the pegasus a little more.
Thank's Guy for your video! Now I can differentiate and choose my new's pick-up (Pegasus). I had trouble finding video which fully expresses the tone of the pegasus compared with Nazgul. Even Ola Englund and Keith Merrow have failed to bring out the tone of the pegasus...
Nice demo Petey. It's really helpful that you included the solo'd guitar clips. I've got something I can base my current tone on to sit better it a mix
super good riffing, I was comparing exactly these for low tuned stuff like this. Reminiscent of John Browne of Monuments at points. super good riffs and tone is nice for both pickups! Do you recall which you preferred?
Nice comparison and great playing. I’m having a hard time deciding which pickups I’ll use in my new guitar... the Pegasus/Sentient set seem like a really nice option to me cause they can handle high gain pretty well while still maintaining string clarity ...
Am I in the minority here, or is it really difficult to find a difference in the sound from the two? Like I never really had a problem finding differences in like, BKP, Lace, EMG, DiMarzio, even other SD shootouts, but these two sound pretty much identical to me.
+Ordacleaphobia It's how he has his sound set up and what he is playing. A little to aggressive on the down tuning and not enough variety in what he is playing. Both are aimed at metal players so if you using mostly power chords and deeper single notes the difference won't be as obvious. The Pegasus is aimed more at Progressive Metal and Modern Metal styles, The Nazgul is aimed at the more aggressive down tuning and D-Jent types. Drop the tuning enough and push the gain and most any modern pickup will sound about the same.
I wanna get a new brigde pickup, but is gettin hard do make a decision , they all sound good , i was checkin the nazgul and the black winter even the sh-8 invader ,now the pegasus? Fuck
That's the first PU comparison i found that's really useful. first i was like "going for the nazgul, just becasue of the name" but i think the pegasus sounds better. ty ^^
Pegasus has a weird unpleasant midrange boost, and a bit lower output. Nazgul is higher output without that midrange. Thats basically the difference between the two in a nutshell lmao

I frikken love them my other guitars sound like turd after playing the SD equippeds... oh and the split wiring on a push pull pot sounds phenomenal! the diversity!
After listening to this play through a few times, I'm beginning to see why Keith Merrow felt it was necessary to come up with his own signature Fishman pickup set. While the Nazgul overall sounds cool and unique in its own right, It leaves a lot to be desired in the way of note definition and chord clarity.
Which one do you prefer sir? I'm having a really hard time deciding between the two!! They will be going into a Swamp Ash guitar if that makes any difference.
Nice axe... Cool demo for people looking for an SD pickup purely for down tuned death metal type stuff... Nobody's looking to use one of these things for cleans. I think the Nazgul sounds marginally better to my ears, for this kind of genre. I like the pegasus a lot but in this demo the single strings stuff and basic power chords sounded a bit phasey and robotic... If that makes sense? Anyway, everything Seymour Duncan does is awesome.
Hey Petey, do you have any experience with these pups in other woods? I could be mistaken, but I believe that Setius are mahogany guitars w/ mahogany/maple necks.. Do you think that this played a significant role in the Nazgul having the bite that the Pegasus seemed to lack? I feel like the Nazgul is better for darker sounding woods, and it's more of a riffer's pickup, as where the Pegasus may be more desirable in a brighter guitar; especially if you play a lot of notes in the higher register.
Hi there! I own the same pickups on my guitar but I hardly manage to achieve that tone. Can you tell me what amp and cab did you use or some settings? Best regards!

Plus I think it's funny how people talk crap about a person's pickup review like they've got some sort of room to talk. When people do a pickup review on their own dime (buy it themselves) and take their personal time to to post a review with their own music, it's them just giving you a chance to see it in progress. Nobody, especially this guy who is a total pimp, owes anyone a tailored review to what "they" (the viewer, idiot or not) think is sufficient for what they want. Then maybe someone will leave snide comments on your "hard earned" pickup reviews and production values. Constructive criticism is one thing, being a straight up dick RUclips troll is another. Came for the pickup demo, stayed for the incredible music!

Basil Stevens Pegasus or Black Winter?!

Basil Stevens Perfect eq but i wonder if it has enough drive (6 string version)

think of it this way. a 7 string is just a 6 string guitar with an extra string.
