- Reed Sorenson claimed his first Nationwide Series win in nearly four years after prevailing in a very confusing finish in Saturday's Bucyrus 200 at Road America.
The race featured three green-white-checkered attempts for several wrecks in the closing laps. Sorenson's Turner Motorsports teammate, Justin Allgaier, held the lead on the final lap, but after the caution flag waved for an incident involving Aric Almirola, Allgaier ran out of fuel and stalled on the lengthy 4.048-mile road course.
Ron Fellows then passed Sorenson, and it appeared at first that Fellows took the lead. But NASCAR reviewed the finish until several minutes after the conclusion of the race. NASCAR determined Fellows moved ahead of Sorenson when the yellow flag was in sight, and therefore, awarded the victory to Sorenson.
It was Sorenson's fourth career win in the series but his first since July 2007 at Gateway International Raceway.
"I knew it was going to be close on gas for all of us, and I was just able to make it at the end," Sorenson said. "We had a good car all day, but not a winning car, but good enough to make it at the end."
Michael McDowell dominated most of the race and led in the closing laps before an accident involving newcomer Doug Harrington forced the first two-lap overtime attempt.
After the first of the three green-white-checkered restarts, Jacques Villeneuve, driving the No.22 Dodge in place of Brad Keselowski, dove to the inside of the track and made contact with Brian Scott. Villeneuve then bumped into Max Papis and sent Papis into the gravel before he hit the barrier hard.
During the second g-w-c attempt, Allgaier chased down McDowell for the lead. McDowell overshot one of the corners, allowing Allgaier to slip by and take the lead for the first time in the race.
After McDowell ran off course, a three-car wreck involving Steve Wallace, Eric McClure and Alex Kennedy set up the third and final overtime finish.
"I thought we had won it," said Allgaier, who ended up finishing 19th. "When the caution came out, I was pretty sure we had won it, but we ran out of fuel."
Fellows finished second in this race for the second year in a row.
Villeneuve bounced back from a penalty midway through the race to finish third. NASCAR penalized Villeneuve after he changed his lane prior to a restart. He was running second to McDowell at the time.
When the race ended, Papis pulled up next to Villeneuve on pit road to express his displeasure. Papis finished two laps down in 23rd.
The greatest road track in North America and we treat it like a JV Busch series track. The fact that this isn't a marquee track in the Sprint Cup is a joke
Absolutely. The fact that Road America hasn't become a permanent fixture on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule is a joke. In fact, need all 3 of NASCAR's national series (Trucks, Xfinity, and Cup) making an annual trek to Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin - it's an iconic road course that produces some of the best action anywhere in racing.
@@josephconciatori9824 I'd like Xfinity and Cup to go their regular or at least every other year but have trucks go to Canadian Tire.
50x better than a 1.5 mile track
You know what, Villeneuve is like the Ayrton Senna of NASCAR. If Ayrton Senna sucked at driving.

the only thing "bizarre" about this race is that nascar dosen't understand the term "local yellow"
***** well, that's kind of my point. a local yellow would have allowed the race to continue, not this crap.
NASCAR does know what a "local yellow" is, however, after an incident involving one of the safety members, who ended up dying, at Daytona during a non-Nascar sanctioned race NASCAR preferred doing full course cautions rather than "local yellows". It gives the safety workers a safer environment to clean up the track basically.
Good call by NASCAR to give Reed Sorenson the win. The moment the caution comes out the field is frozen and the drivers have to maintain pace speed and Ron didn't; he blew by Reed
As for the finish, Reed was ahead of Ron when the caution came out. Yet Somehow no one told Ron to slow down. He clearly passed him after the caution came out. Had Allgaier not ran out of gas, and maintain race pace, Justin would had won.
Former world champion everyone
Stupid rule from Nascar, Villeneuve moved over by half a car at the start. Villeneuve is a racing legend
Should be more racing like this, Villeneuve made a honest human error. It wasn't intended to put anyone in the wall or off the track, the grey stuff just disappeared under his wheels. Fuck'em V dawgg!
I personally don't understand why people aspire car racing to be so perfect, As if the cars are driven by robots it's monotonous! That was the best racing on 4 wheels I've seen since playing Toca 2 on the playstation 1
Peace
It may be a stupid rule but you still have to follow it even if you are a racing "legend" and racing "legends" don't wreck 2 people on "bone head" moves like he does
+Sergei Soprano I'm not doubting by a racing legend, but legends can make fuckface moves like at 5:00
Sprint cup needs to race at Elkhart. Add Road Atlanta while they're at it.
Laguna seca or Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve
@@russianbubbawallace8681 The owner of Circuit Gilles Villeneuve stopped allowing the Xfinity Series in an attempt to get a Cup race there
@@AlexRuane I think they would sell because a lot of Canadians can't afford to come down and go to a race. A race at the f1 circuit would be amazing
Mid-Ohio & Mosport also
Michael McDowell was Leading had a shot, and he THREW IT ALL AWAY
What a crazy race and finish!
@ballplayer1799 the worst part for him is that he pushed it hard and he really didnt need to.
@SuperColossal33 It's the same penalty they always give, a drive through if its under green. They're not going to give him a different penalty just because it's a long road course and he wasn't going to go a lap down. They were just being consistent.
Why doesnt the cup series go here? or Mid Ohio? or the Canada tracks?
The Sprint Cup Series has a very grid-locked schedule right now. No one is willing to give up any dates, in fact some want more. For instance ISC took Rockingham out for another race at Auto Club. Them SMI bought the track and gave the other date to Texas. The two main companies refuse to give up dates. So it's hard to get any good race tracks on the schedule.
They choose instead to give shitty 1.5 mile ovals up by the 12 pack. Its boring and retarded. But contracts lock them to the schedule. Some teams push for the same tracks every year. Finally did I mention the current tracks have the money to throw at NASCAR to keep them there regardless of much better of a race it would be?
$$$
No garages is one of the main reasons.
It isn't confusing if you are aware of Nascar's rules for when the caution comes out. You don't race back to the line you slow down to a cautious speed and come around to the flag.
In open heel racing, Jacques Villenueve is good. In NASCAR, he's terrible.
not sure why that would matter..
What a stupid penalty to give villeneuve, it didn't affect him at all.
Probably because SMI owns Infineon and not Road America.
Had to come and check this out after @TheIceberg ask on his channel the craziest race moments remembered and this was @naohcoleman5556 choice. I would have to agree. So many lost this race it was hard to keep up with.
wow this is pathetic, cmon guys, play some gran turismo or forza before the race or something jeeze
Reed Sorenson wins... :D
Nascar needs to only use the oval race course once in a while for tradition. Road Courses and several times better. I would create road courses with all sorts of turns and even add hills!!!
Uh... there already are hills. The one at 7:56 is probably as bad as any hill on any other track that isn't named Laguna Seca.
Charlotte Motor Speedway solved the oval course problem.
Villeneuve is a outsider , one thing NASCAR and it's drivers hate , are outsiders ....... BS penalty but it is OK it is for a outsider ....
The rule is you can’t move over and change lanes before the start finish line
why I see race this cars with shit brakes and shit grip is very interesting, of course much more than a oval. I want drivers, driving this car in circuit is a challenge
Damn good racing there at the end! I still wish the cup would race here. The road courses are fun to watch and they should add more.
congrats your wish came true
Damn. McDowell did good
There was a race similar to this where on the final lap two cars were head to head cutting turns and driving super dirty and I can’t find the video
Road America is the best road course nascar uses.. and yet the Sprint Cup still goes to boring infineon
@jrfan07 i misstyped that, i meant vickers just barely squeaked by before the line, it was questionable enough let alone the move didn't affect his position at all, he didn't gain anything by doing it.
I remember watching this race when I was 16 years old - even today, I'd have to say it's one of the strangest finishes I've seen in any NASCAR event.
R.I.P. Jason Leffler.
Ugh stupid autocorrect. What I was saying was if they race here it should be at least 60 laps.
Imagine villenueve getting into a fight with tony Stewart... That would be something I wanna see
You can't go three wide at that part of Road America.
all sorts going on there, real shame for justin
If the NSCS races here, it should be attests
Cup ought to race at Road America.
his closest competition was actually jacques who got shuffled back.
And a penalty
