Just because FIDE agreed does not mean it is not match fixing- it can be the case where the players proposed the idea of joint winner but internally they(Magnus and Ian) could have discussed about match fixing even before the match started and an idea to show it up as a gesture of sportsmanship in the name of joint winners.

FIDE should learn from this. Make the rules clear. And if players don't agree then they are free to not join any FIDE event. There are other players who deserve the prize money. It's not like FIDE should beg players like Carlsen, Nepo, and Nakamura. This is an opportunity to discover new talents. Even if they are not around fans will still watch the event. And the previous candidates and WCC is proof of that

What Magnus said after game number seven was not good enough to suggest Match fixing. Both of them having played seven games between them as well as earlier matches must have been very tired at the end of the day and probably it must have been stated as a hypothetical possibility and exposing the provisions without application of mind.
More over expecting the finalists to play indefinite number of tie breaker games is very cruel and not befitting to the world championship.

Wow, match fixing is the stupidest thing I’ve heard in this case. I thought chess was a game of intelligent people. In Chess, the draw is an option and there were no rules to stop a draw from being an option so the match ended in a draw! It’s simple!

    • @ameybugde5080

      No it's not.
In any other sport it's specially called match fixing.
Chess having option to draw. It has option to draw on board where game can't go any further.
The choice of draw can't be allowed to have even before the game is being played.
There should be strict action against magnus.
Can't have him just breaking all the rules, if he doesn't like it he should not play.

    • @sophieedel6324
      @sophieedel6324 5 дней назад

In other sports draws are only "an option" in quarter finals for example, because they can no longer influence the course of the championship. If you allow draws to happen everywhere, you allow multiple players to collude, they can for example manipulate the matches in such a way that player A will never face off with player B. Draws are just a really bad idea in general, they leave a competition open to collusion.

Also that conversation was after the game no. 7 which was ended in a draw and after that no game happened. So how did they fix the match ? People are going mindless just to hate someone ! There could have been a rule determining the number of games they have to play for example 10 and then after that , it goes to armageddon ! They have been playing for 6 hours and also it's new years eve, everybody has to go home (even the spectators) and celebrate with the family. I understand there can't be two blitz world champion but for now it is the reality ! Magnus asked Nepo he said "YES" to share the prize , then they asked Chief Arbiter and then asked to Fide's President/Vice president before coming to a conclusion. Learn a lesson and the make the rules clear the next time about what happens if they get to certain number of draws ..

Asking why the women's finalists played their games is not logically relevant. You would only have a point if they WEREN'T allowed a joint championship after asking.
In the video idk if magnus says "we can" or "we should". Either way there is room to intrepret. Was he trying to matchfix or just simply stating the obvious flaw of having no proper tie-break?
In chess it's very easy to draw at the highest lvls. A perfect example can be seen in this tournament itself. In the Open section when there were multiple players all on 8 points and right after, the vast majority effortlessly made draws in just a few moves, in multiple games.
Regardless, Magnus should not have made that comment. Imo he should also have played more rounds before suggesting the sharing title.

In the last round of the swiss portion of the blitz tournament all 4 top boards made a quick draw (3 of them by playing Berlin), with Hans playing one of those draws, for strategic reasons. Players thought that a draw gives them better chance to advance to knockout rather than trying to win and thus opening oneself to the possibility of a loss. Was this wrong?

Did you see the matches on the first day of blitz. Once many players were in the top eight after 11 rounds, everyone was playing for a draw except those who were not in the top 8. What is a tie breaker? Can't they draw. Everyone will play only defense in the situations. so, unless rules change, and the rules are enforced and you don't punish irrelevant infarctions of rules like jeans etc. by disqualifying a player for an entire round, FIDE's events will always be shrouded in controversy.

Carlsen replied saying he doesn't fix draws and both players deserve the Blitz Title - which indirectly shows his state of mind - which I was critical the other day. The man is going through a confused state of mind ... He seems to think he has achieved everything ... nothing left to achieve - but he has not achieved peace of mind or stability of mind. AS 90 year old Clint Eastwood said :" Luxury is being able to play with your grandchildren. Luxury is gaving your paraents alive.. Luxury is what money cannot buy!"

WOW FIFA just adopted new rules for the World Cup finals. If a match ends in a tie and the PKs go to 3-3, the coaches can agree to stop the match and declare both teams as Champions!!! . . . After all both teams are playing high quality futbol and both teams deserve to win.

RUclips and social media making it out to be more of a controversy than it is. Firstly it’s blitz, not classical or even rapid. A joint-winner won’t throw the earth out of its axis. Secondly, if two GMs want they can theoretically draw every game unto eternity in every format. This flaw is inherent to chess. Only possible way to break a tie when two players are colluding is through armageddon which didn’t exist until few years ago. Now imagine two players colluding in the classical championship and a world champion gets decided by armageddon. If you don’t have a problem with a classical champion being decided by such a ridiculous method, you should not have a problem with a joint winner in blitz. Nothing to see here.

Players intentionally draw matches all the time, often in quite an obvious way! I’m not happy that FIDE agreed to let them share the title, but that was FIDE’s decision.

i think since magnus beat fide on the jean thing that he would take it a step farther; by changing the rules right after being allowed to play in jeans, magnus was giving fide the last middle finger, and saying dont mess with me im the great magnus; plus he ian is his friend and magnus wanted him to finally get a gold trophy! so as in chess, magnus made a calculated move and killed two birds with one stone!! they both got paid, they both are blitz world champions; fide didnt spend extra money because title and prize are shared; only real losers are the fans who expected a gud long chess battle!

    Let us get this clear.
Carlsen says it was a bd joke.
Besides, when he spoke that to Ian did the latter too agreed? Not at all. Then, how can one player’s statement ( not action ) alone can make it a match fixing?
Both Neimann whose ego was badly bruised by the loss he suffered at the hands of Carlsen, crying hoarse that ethics committee must look into it AND the Sports Today reporting this must introspect, please. 🙏

Threatening to match fix is not match fixing. Joking about match fixing is not match fixing. FIDE should be clear on its rules and next time don’t allow split championships. In olympics however they do allow two gold medals if tied. So there’s that.

Magnus makes rules and decisions as he goes on. When Magnus is proposing a short draws, it is match fixing. It is not a joke to propose to fix the outcome of future games. Now, we have to suspect all those games he lost to junior players.

Whenever magnus does something wrong, it was a joke. He decides they fought really well and both were deserved winners. He is just a player in the game no matter how good he is at it. A player who plays the game can say but should not decide they are the worthy winners. Should not be given a chance to mock the sports governing body unless they made mistake. Appropriate punishments should be given.
