When I was a kid I had a book called 'Pirates, Ships and Sailors'. A really cool collection of stories that appealed to girls as well as boys. My favorite was about a little girl- a beach visitor- who watched this grumpy-looking taciturn shop owner build model ships over the course of the summer. And on the day she had to return to the city, she watched the sails and masts go up in a bottle- just like the one that had mesmerized her in the shop's window all summer. And then he gave the bottle to her.
He's a "purist" Even cutting the glass takes some skill. But yeah, it looks soooo much better and is rewarding to put in into that tiny opening. Nice job Jim & Mo Rocca!!!
+imaginepeace63 You should have a peek at the episode of the Woodwright's Shop where this same gentleman walks you through the process of building a ship in a bottle step-by-step in more detail than this short segment. It's here on RUclips if you're interested, as are plenty more videos on how to put ships in bottles. This particular video was the one that got me started on "hittin' the bottle", saw it one Sunday morning and said "Well how hard can it be? I can do that." Yeah, famous last words, but a couple weeks and a few choice cuss-words later, I had my first ship finished, and now I've got the next one underway in the shop with more to follow right behind it. The irony: I'm a teetotaler, don't drink liquor at all, so I have scrounge my bottles out of the recycling bin or coax my friends who do drink to have a few more for old times' sake. There are glass soda bottles out there, so I usually drink those if I'm really short on bottles.
The reporter reminds me of an American John Oliver (what John would be like without the British self-loathing and self-deprecating humor)and the other guy is like the personification of every cool shop teacher who passionately CARED about his craft and wanted you to learn and enjoy it too. ^_^
OK, now do it WITHOUT hinges on the masts. I always was of the opinion hinges looked bad. Very bad. So, I figured out a really easy way to do without......no, I won't tell, you figure it out yourself! Once your unhinged, you'll never go back!
3:52 that handshake was so genuine, I wish the world had more kind souls like these
