Exactly, some reactors even laugh when they see that boy being beaten and urinated on his head, and that made me sick and immediately closed the video. Furthermore, when he mocked the girl on the tram, his laughter actually revealed confusion and sadness, and that requires strong empathy to feel. No matter how many times, I watch it, the story of the boy and the girl & especially the end scene always gets me. Without saying a word, she was such an effective actress. (Including her younger self (whoever actually played her ))
Each time I see this, I say to myself, "Please don't get old. Don't let this be the day, where I am so used to the film that I don't laugh or cry as much and therefore enjoy it slightly less." I even tempt fate by seeing it quite a few times per year. I think it's about to edge out Galaxy Quest as my most watched film. That's quite a feat, since I used to be quite a Star Wars nut.

Fun fact: The landlord and landlady, were the martial art big brother and sister (classmate) of Jacky Chen in real life during their teenage years. The landlady, Yuen Qiu, was in the James Bond movie The Man With The Golden Gun. She was one of the school girls who save Bond when escaping from the Karate school. Her husband the landlord was played by Yuen Wah, who was Bruce Lee's stunt double in Enter The Dragon. When you see Bruce doing the acrobatic tumbling and back flip, that was actually Yuen Wah.

The scene with the landlady in the car doing the hand gestures to the boss of the gang was from a Bruce Lee movie. I can't remember which one, but definitely remember the scene. It's cool that you had fun with Kung Fu Hustle. Somehow, it's a very polarizing film. You caught the cartoon/looney tunes vibe and if you watched those as a kid, you'd kind of get this movie. Shaolin Soccer from Stephen Chow (main lead from this movie..who started off as a stuntman, the landlady line about him towards the end of this movie was an inside joke) was also good.

Kung Fu Hustle is my 3rd favorite movie of all-time... So many great hidden Easter Eggs and Subtle References right from Jump. The opening credits has the Butterfly which is a reference to the main character played by Stephen Chow of his metamorphosis. The 3 Masters, the 1st time you see the Coolie, he kicks the sack of grain onto his shoulders foreshadowing his kicking ability. The first shot of Donut he's rolling out Congee with his staffs all around his shop. When Tailor is introduced, his Rings are shown prominently in his boutique. When the Landlord 1st appears, he drinks Fluid and slinks around the neighborhood relaxed. His power is Fluidity and Flexibility, like water. The Landlady 1st appears and she's screaming which foreshadows her abilities, and lastly the Beast, when he's sitting on the toilet, all around his room are Frogs... This movie is brilliant. Stephen Chow has made other movies, none as good as this or Shaolin Soccer. Kung Fu Hustle is his Magnum Opus

Tell you more, Yuen Qui(landlady) this was her first film in 20 years. She wasn't even going to take this role, she was bringing a protege to audition and Stephen Chow begged her. She attended the Peking Opera House which is essentially a school that teaches theater, acting, gymnastics, martial arts, etcetera. She attended with many legends including Jackie Chan & Yuen Wah(her husband in the film)
Danny Chan(Sum/Axe gang leader) has an uncanny resemblance to Bruce Lee. So much so he parodied him in Steven Chow's Shaolin Soccer. He would go on to portray Bruce Lee in Ip Man 3 & 4 as well as The legend of Bruce Lee.
When the landlady said Sing would probably be good as a Stuntman. She was talking about her husband in the film, who is predominantly a stuntman.
Stephen Chow would create one more movie called CJ7 which was really good, in 2008. Then he retired from acting focusing on writing and directing

There are several arrangements here on YT and the song(particularly the violin solo) is generally so chaotic but oh so fun. I hope some of ya take the chance to watch it, really makes you appreciate those that dedicate their time to their particular craft.

One of my favorite movies. Always happy to see someone else enjoy it for the first time.
The crushed soccer ball bit at the beginning is a reference to Chow's prior film "Shaolin Soccer." People had been clamoring for a sequel, but Chow didn't want to make one. Hence, "No more soccer!" If you enjoyed this one, I'd definitely recommend putting Shaolin Soccer on the to-watch list eventually.

Another kung-fu classic that switched back and forth between goofball comedy and touching drama--albeit neither as _intensely_ goofball nor heartwrenching--was _Last Hero in China_ AKA _Claws of Steel,_ starring Jet Li in his prime. It's a riot.

About 40 years ago in many impoverished countries in East Asia there was tremendous economic development. And then these countries have gradually become strong and balanced with economic power with Europe and North America. Cinema and movies at this time were also symbols of that miraculous economic development.

I knew I'd like this reaction video when you deliberately chose to watch it in the original Cantonese! My hunch was confirmed in the opening scene when you caught the Matrix reference without realizing it was an actual reference LOL I'm always so happy when I see someone discover this masterpiece because it's literally the all-stars of kung-fu cinema history gathered together into one film. It's fascinating to read about the epic ton of movie and cultural references packed in here - from China AND Hollywood!

But im so glad you had so much fun with this movie! Please watch Shaolin Soccer! It stars and directed by the same actor in this movie and i think its funnier and more romantic!
