There's one way to make new helium, and that's nuclear reactions. The nuclear fusion reactors that're currently still being developed use Hydrogen and fuse it to make helium, like the sun does.
Basically, it makes hydrogen feckin warm and puts it under pressure like it's in the core of the sun, and then the hydrogen atoms combine into helium atoms and release even more heat.
The extra heat gets the classic "use it to boil water" like we've been doing since steam engines and the helium can be used for other stuff

It's funny as hell but I can't help but realize I'm the outsider because I DO get excited with the variations of things... It makes me dive into them deeper.
You know you're getting old when you notice your legs seem to be getting shorter, but the floor is getting further away, every time you bend over to pick something up...
and you realize that getting back up is no longer the graceful sweeep it once was, it's more of a slow motion unbending...

It's actually relatively easy to manufacture helium. All you need is two kinds of hydrogen ions - one that has two neutrons in it, one that has 3 - & smash them together into a hadron collider.
You know, like the Sun does naturally.

We're not actually running out of helium. We're just running out of the really, really cheap helium we had for 30 years or so, when the US decided to dump most of their helium reserve into the market.
That's also the real meaning of "the world's helium reserves were halved over the last two decades" (or variations thereof) that you see in a lot of websites. That's true. The key word there being _reserves_ (as in, helium that had been extracted and was in storage). There's still plenty left underground, it just costs some money to get it.

Its today that I found out we are running out of helium and it can't be manufactured. Why the hell are we using that for balloons then?? And why is it so cheap that most common people can afford to put it in a balloon that would most likely fly off within a few hours

We do make helium as a byproduct of processing natural gas. Its just that capturing and purifying it is very costly.
Lots of helium 3 on the moon but that does kind of ruin the joke.

That doesn't really count since the helium is already in there. It isn't created, just purified. Meanwhile, you can create the exact same chemistry of natural gas, all you need is carbon, hydrogen, and some energy. Though it is easier to get bacteria and algae to do it in a bioreactor.

Dara, you're a really funny guy, but you need to re-record that invitation to subscribe. It gives the impression you recorded it between clearing out the chest freezer from all the food that had gone off when the freezer broke down while you were on holiday, and having to change your bedding because while you were out the dog's vomit had burned through the duvet through to the mattress.
