@Peter from NZ I've seen other blind reactions like this and they usually just assume that most of the songs are unimportant and huge wastes of time. Hence, they don't get much of a story out of it.

@Peter from NZ You're right. I showed this episode to a friend who'd never seen the show. She had fun and wanted to see more from the beginning, but didn't follow much of this story and forgot much of it. After watching the series, getting fully invested, and realizing this episode was starting, she was SO excited. And crying her eyes out/clapping with glee by the end.

@Peter from NZ Personally I think one of the best episodes would be something that shows the chemistry of the characters and cast. Because that is what hooks to this show. OMWF is IMO the best episode but mostly because it's the culmination point of so much buildup. It's hard to feel anything when you don't know anything. But chemistry between characters is something already one episode would show.
Perhaps something like Doppelgangland would be the best episode for 1st viewing. There may be better ones. I personally love Spike so much that perhaps some episode with him, but doppel is pretty great at showing chemistry, and how the show manages to switch between emotion to emotion so effortlessly.

    - As others have said, not the best episode to watch for someone who hasn't watched the show, but it's definitely one of the best for fans and you seem to have enjoyed it! You've actually picked up on quite a lot for someone who watched with no context.
    - The ticket lady is indeed an Easter egg, but more for fans. This is Marti Noxon, a head writer on the show and the executive producer of this season. The mustard man is another head writer, David Fury.
    - Willow and Tara are a lesbian couple. In her song, Tara sings about being under her spell, and the irony of it is that she actually is under her spell: Willow's been addicted to magic, the way people are addicted to drugs, and they've had a fight about it last episode. Willow has cast a spell to make her forget their fight, by that abusing magic and violating her girlfriend. So when taking that into account, despite it being a very Disney princess like song, it's dark.
    - Spike is a metaphor for identity crisis. He doesn't fit in any of the worlds, not the human and not the vampire. Because even tough he's soulless, he's in love with the vampire slayer and can feel things like empathy and remorse. At the beginning of the season he even babysits her little sister (Dawn. Yes, she's supposed to be annoying. You've seen Michelle Trachtenberg on things like Gossip Girl and Ice Princess) and he was close with her mother before she passed. He sings to Buffy to leave him alone because she has depression and is using him for comfort.
    - Giles, who's like a father figure to Buffy, sings about leaving because he wants her to be independent and not rely so much on him. Tara sings about leaving Willow because she found out Willow cast a spell on her. Last season Tara's mind has been violated by the season's main villain, and if that's not enough her family used to gaslight her, and now Willow's basically doing the same.
    - Dawn dances but doesn't sing because Michelle requested that. Her and Alyson Hannigan (Willow) were afraid to sing. SMG (Buffy) wasn't going to sing herself, but then realized it was important. So yeah, they all really sing.
    - Anthony (Giles) and James (Spike) are the only two with musical background. James has a band named Ghost of the Robot.
    - I don't know if you've picked up on that, but when Buffy is dancing crazy by the end of the episode, this is her attempting to commit suicide. This episode is fun and all, but it's also been known as "Depression, the musical."
    - The red demon, who's known by fans as "Sweet" is played by Broadway actor Hinton Battle.
    - If you're curious, there's a behind the scene for this episode. It doesn't cover the fridge question, but other things lol

Definitely genius storytelling. In the show she's depressed, so of course her music number is struggling making a coherent song. All the weird, off beat change ups show this perfectly.

Thanks for watching, a few notes.
Tara and Giles had recorded music before and Spike was in a band, so their voices are their own, and that's why everyone else sang in a flat C. The cast had a choreographer and a vocal coach, but i think only for a week. To further explain for the flat Cs and the jerky dance moves. I think they were generally pretty good, but I'm sure I'm biased for knowing and loving the show.
Spike was already in love with Buffy and she repeatedly said she didn't care, but that kiss at the end was their first.
Tara sang the whole song in a positive way towards Willow, obviously, then found the herb Willow had used to erase her memory and redid the verse towards the end in a very sad way (i mention because you seemed annoyed by the repetition).
Buffy died sacrificing herself at the end of the previous season and Willow the very good witch resurrected her early in the current season, that last part obviously mentioned.
This is the only musical episode they ever did and the first show to do one, if that matters. HUSH is a much better episode, on the off chance you want to do another. I agree it sucks that this is such a white cast in southern California, but the show is fantastic for acting and writing and such. If nothing else, thanks for checking it out.

Both ‘The Bitter Suite’ and ‘Once More, With Feeling’ are really unprecedented for their time in TV. Even though Xena’s musical episode came first in 1998, both Buffy and Xena take the credit for musical episodes becoming pop culture in TV. But they also did the unthinkable by cleverly, not only coincide with the plot, but further it along in that they both have the characters spill secrets and make confessions which aid to evolve respective character arcs and tell a story that has them begin again in new and interesting ways.
In ‘Once More, With Feeling’ Buffy confesses she was pulled out of heaven by her friends. Forcing the Scooby Gang, Willow in particular, to process this information and grapple with the seriousness of it. In ‘The Bitter Suite’ Xena confesses that she killed Ming Tien. Forcing Xena to beg for forgiveness from Gabrielle so she can pass through the waterfall. Thereby reconciling and reuniting them, making their relationship stronger so they can battle the real enemy.
All of this is done in song. Cheesy? Sure. But clever at the same time. The creators knew that talking about these subjects and themes would be heavy on the audience watching and listening, so addressing them in music was a way of making what was heavy subject material much lighter. And at the same time, they also knew that music is meant for honest expression. So really, how else would or could it work? They ultimately made the right decision. As cheesy or silly as it may look on the surface, they achieved what few have… Going deeper without drowning. This is why these two musical episodes remain staples in TV history. It is not just because they’re musicals. It’s because they’re musicals with depth. They could have just been some silly entertainment for the cast to have fun with and show off their talent and nothing more. Instead they were much, much, much more than that. They were artistic genius. They were performance art. And you will find it difficult to truly understand either of these shows without them.
As my soul brother Sweet put it: “Now, we’re partying. That’s what it’s all about.”

Even before knowing much about music, I ADORED how the second note in “heaaaaaven” fell sharp, because it was supposed to be discordant and not fitting. Everyone thought they saved buffy from hell and that she was depressed because she was recovering from the trauma of it, when in reality she was depressed because she had paradise and it was taken from her by the people she loves the most. That sharp, painful, discordant note doesn’t just show buffy being upset at being taken from heaven, it represents the song going WRONG and not how we (or her friends) would expect because of the twist. Perfect way to convey a twist through song, especially one so dark!

For people who are wondering about great episodes AND want to see tones of what the show is like without getting too bogged down by huge plot (although the first two episodes do just fine, but have the problem most pilots do of having the show still finding itself), I would have suggested _Prophecy Girl._ No where near the best in most people's favorite's lists (including mine; it is considered a great episode by many, though), but does everything else I mentioned, well.

TV guides don't allow you to go back to the first episode of a show on demand. You had to wait for reruns if any. Most people back then actually missed the first season of Buffy since viewership grew after it. This is also the reason why people didn't mind clip show episodes.

Too bad you were too busy making up your own lyrics to listen to the lyrics the characters were singing because they were this episode's dialogue and the things revealed through their songs completely changed the direction of the entire show. This was the show that launched all the musical television shows that became a staple of your generation's childhood.

@@notthemovie You really should watch the entire series. This episode was a lot of fun but it is ridiculously cheesy and doesn't give you a real idea of what the show is like. I really think you would love it. This was the first TV show to do a musical episode so I think she was concentrating on all the singing and dancing instead of her fighting. SMG is a phenomenal athlete and like I said before, she is the one doing the majority of her stunt work. Oh, and that crazy dancing she was doing... believe it or not that is really how people danced back in the 60's. 😂🤣 I think Joss Whedon was going for the old 1960's movie feel like the films with Elvis Presley, Annette Funicello, Gidget, etc... and he nailed it. As much as I love this episode I think it's a terrible one to start with unless you're only interested in musicals.

I remember watching this when it premiered when i was in high school. A few nuggets of information from this old man. Amber (tara) and Anthony (Giles or rather the guy from merlin for you) were the only ones that had real previous singing experiences, the rest of the cast had like 6 weeks or so to get comfortable with the material. Also all the songs were written by show creator Joss Whedon and his then wife using his guitar and a paino. In fact, on the sound strack they have a few of the songs sung by him and his wife.
As for the dub differences and awkward transitions have a bit to do with the fact that this is the only musical of the seven year show (except for one small scene). Modern shows that we are more used to like Glee are built around singing talent as well as a studio production team that spend years perfecting things. This team had only a slightly longer lead time to learn their songs and get the hang of things like lip syncing.
