Love The Gladiators sound back then and still today...TIMELESS!! I recently saw Clinton Fearon (the man wearing the grey vest singing in this clip, ex-Gladiator now)live in concert and can say there was the most incredible energy in the club. These men were and still are committed to creating beautiful music for the heart and soul. Jah works!
Hit maker from JAMAICA with a unique sound and versatile, THE GLADIATORS foundation builders of JAMAICAN MUSIC CULTURE around the world, RIP ALBERT GRIFFITHS. THE BLACKSTONES
HERE'S SOME CRUCIAL FOOTAGE OF ONE OF JAMAICA'S GREATEST ROOTS REGGAE BANDS. The Gladiators began recording just as the rock steady era was ending In Jamaica. They had a few singles out in 1968 which I would categorize as rock steady, although by the middle of that year, reggae had taken over and rock steady was yesterday's news. After recording for Studio One, they were signed to Virgin UK and thus reached a larger audience. They released a string of exceptional albums with great songs and great harmony singing. Here they are singing Jah Works from the LP Proverbial Reggae and the single Heresay, both from 1978. The Gladiators consisted of Albert Griffiths, lead singer with Clinton Fearon and Dallimore Sutherland supplying gorgeous harmony. On a personal note, when I first saw this film I thought Albert Griffiths was just about the coolest guy I had ever seen. Says I-man don't deal in no kind, of hearsay (hearsay) Back 'weh wi dat an' come straight, if you a come (If you a come, you a come) Say dem a de ginnal, dem a de big chief (de big chief) But the winning card in dis game, Is I who got it (is I who got it) Remember dis little sayin' that bush have ears Pick sense out of nonsense You'll get the answer (you'll get the answer) Bush don't have ears, my friend, but someone may be in it Hearing, what you have said about your brothers (brothers, brothers) Hearing what you have done in de pas' 'Cause every secret sin must reveal So if you nuh know, what a gwan, woo yea! Keep your mouth shut an' don' say, a word ya (Don't you say a word ya)
I´n´I see the light trough music!! vibration man, rastafari!! selassie son, clinton fearon has an instint to the music man, god bless him. jah live!! what a rilich video, ueaaa, rilich ma bretha
As a first gladiators purchase i would recommend "trenchtown mix up" (hearsay, hello carol, etc) it has all the classics almost, if you can find the "back to roots" record, it exists on CD, you'll find (to my taste) their best work! Regarding the song Viceroys - Yaho if you look enough on ebay you'll come across a fairly cheap press at some point.....
The Gladiators are of course one of the greatest roots reggae harmony groups of all time, but does anyone know what documentary this fantastic extract is taken from?
Jah works, Jah works, Jah works Jah works I'm a man of fire (-ooh -ooh -ooh ) None of my doings shall never go wrong Jah hear I when I cry Jah hear I when I cry 'Cause I'm a great meditator Yes, I'm a great meditator Wicked a roar like a roaming lion (-ooh ooh -ooh ooh) Trying to destroy thy sons and daughters Although I trad thru the valley of Babylon Although I trad thru the valley of those wicked man I will fear no evil for thou art with me from the beginning Till this day on On an' on an' on

This footage direct sound from the console of prince tony sounds better than any reggae later produced . if these were released on 45 12" in the Uk this would have been one of the best produced sound reggae vs dub of its time .even now it is soo much more honest and deep music than the bull crap they play on the radio nowaydas. ps: someone needs to use the master tapes of the gladiators and produce proper dub version of them ...soon place. in these ya Lifetime ! Bless
do you know if that song available on a comp or cd of some kind (so i don't have to pay an arm and a leg on ebay for a single)? also, would you suggest "trench town mix up", "proverbial reggae" or a different release as a first gladiators purchase?
does anyone know the name of the artist and song that starts in randy's at 3:39 and plays for about 10 seconds? it sounds like they're repeating "jah hope, jah hope, jah hope", not sure though.
