thanks for the vid. just an FYI for everyone, you don't need no computer to do this. just start the car right up.
That's playing Russian Roulette... it's better to be safe than sorry (priming the fuel system before starting).
@@EXOVCDS I see, what exactly would it take to do that? What would I have to buy to do that?
The easy way (but a bit expensive) buy a scan tool that can activate the fuel pump. The cheap way, look for DIY article on how to activate the fuel pump, to run for a minimum of 30 seconds (the longer the better before starting the engine).
@@EXOVCDS okay, actually I think I own a scan tool that can do that. I'll look into it. Thanks for the info and the video.
Thank you. Way easier than it could have been without this video.
Thank you for watching & taking the time to comment!
nice to see how professional you are. good job pal. +1 subscriber
Thank you and thank you for watching! I'm still learning day by day.
I am a Kia tech, and we have GDI engines, which are similar to TDI. In direct injection engines, you have a standard electric fuel pump, but then a mechanical (cam driven) fuel pump to boost up the pressure. At least for GDI engines. So simply cycling the key will only pressurize up to the mechanical fuel pump itself.
Yes, similar design.
I have three TDI (2011-2015) VW's. I remove fuel, add 1/3 new fuel, insert filter, slowly (!!) add to nearly fill, replace cap. Slight amount of fuel should escape onto the shop rags surrounding filter - just a few drops, but this means no air is present. Never had an issue doing it this way. 2015 is a little different - watch your mechanic do it on someone's car if the dealer will allow, then do it yourself.
Thank you for your input!
Thank you good Sir.
Thank you for watching!
I’m a novice, don’t know a lot about engines, this looked quite easy to do until the message came up about priming and the plugging of the computer.
I own a VW Tiguan 2.0 TDi, 150bhp, 4 Motion, 2008, should I attempt this or get a professional like yourself to do it. Just concerned about the priming and plugging in of the computer.
There are some DIY articles online that apparently say that it can be done without a scan tool. Since I work at a shop / it is my job, I have the tools and use them. When in doubt, let someone else do the repair / replacement. If things go wrong when you do it, you are stuck with the repair costs. If a shop makes a mistake, they are liable.
thank you very helpful. 100%.

Hello, I own a 2015 Jetta TDI DIESEL 2.0L I will be coming up on 20,000 miles and I need to know if there is any easier way to get the air out of the fuel system after the fuel filter has been replaced, I don't want to take my vehicle to the VW dealership to do it because I don't want to pay there high price markup and they are messy with the repairs and leave oil and fuel spilled on and all around the engine compartment, I'm very picky with my vehicle and I keep it clean all the time, I try to keep it as if it just come off the showroom floor!! I would rather change the fuel filter myself but if I have to take it to a diesel mechanic, then I will, please let me know if you can help me out in any way, thanks!!!!
if you are picky about your vehicle, then buy a diagnostic cable and use it to bleed the air out of the system... simply push a button.

Perfect job
Thank you for watching!
Hello and thank you for this tutorial, how long does it take to run the pump with vcds?
The pump is cycled for 30 seconds if I remember correctly... a good "bleeding" of the system takes around 3 minutes. I usually run the pump until I can no longer hear any gurgling (air) in the system.
How to prime a filter if I don’t have that cable for that job. Would be possible to just fill up with diesel fluid or diesel purges stuff?
Thank you for video and +1 subscribers
Filling the filter housing will still have air in the system... that is why the fuel pump needs to be activated, to push the air into the fuel tank. If you don't have a scan tool that can do that, then you need to figure out how to activate the fuel pump to do that. Turning the key on & off might activate the pump, but I don't know how many times you need to do that, to bleed the air out. If you find the fuel pump relay (if there is one), you might be able to bypass the relay to do it. I only use the scan tool, so I don't know any other safe way to do it.
You never can see water in filter house with your eyes.
You have to empty the filter house and dreary it properly before that you put new filter in.
I like how easy it is to replace the filter but it's a shame you can't just fire the engine up (making sure the filter housing full of fuel) and job done like on a B5.5.
There's always pros & cons with next generation vehicles... I don't think there will ever be a car that only has pros & no cons. =(
@@EXOVCDS True. I think they could darn well get close but choose not to.
I know this don't have any thing to do with this video but I like your work and I was wondering if you could tell me this? I have a 05 mk4 golf tdi it has a 5 speed manul trany I want to swap out for a 6 speed manul can it be done ?
Sure... bolts right in. But I'm not sure if the stock shifter / cable setup will work. Probably not. Different clutch slave cylinder setup as well, so you would have to change the fittings from the clutch master to the clutch slave at the transmission. Here's a video of a 6 speed transmission removal on a mk4.

Great video. Isn't this a B7 Passat (2012+) rather than a B6?
I just checked en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Passat You are correct! As a prize, let me know what service manual you need (VW or Audi) and I will hook you up (if I have what you need). Send me a private message via youtube.
Diesel engines are very complicated to work with, just. After replacing the fuel filter you can get a non Start condition.
If you don't prime the fuel system then yes.
a little late comment here but i have vcds but cant really find the correct answer: how many seconds you prime the pump? 3x30 seconds or 3x60 seconds.. ? i have cffb engine passat b7 2014 2.0tdi
I listen to the fuel rushing through the filter housing while the pump is running... I keep running the pump / priming the system until I no longer hear a gurgling sound (air rushing through the lines). It is better / safer to run the pump longer than need be... you can not do any damage by running the pump 3, 6, 12 times... but you can do damage by not running it enough.
Where does the air go when you cycle the pump? Isn't it a closed system?
Gets pushed into the tank via the return hose... is my guess.
Thanks my friend, is this filter, Mann ??
I can't remember... it might have been. Thanks for watching!
Hi Thomas, went to the VW and bought the fuel filter for my VW Sportwagen 2016 TDI using my VIN number to make sure tu buy the right one. Part # 5Q0127177C and it comes with a plastic pipe/straw attached to the filter. Do you have a video showing how to change that kind of filter or whatfor is the plastic pipe/straw? BTW not doing the job yet until I get my VCDS (on its way) Thanks and greetings from Mexico
Hi, I do not yet have a video for one of those filters... it is listed as a "Fuel Water Separator Filter". The top of the filter cover should have a fitting that aligns with the extra fitting on top of the filter. The straw is mounted to the filter and allows for "water removal" from the filter, with the filter cover in place. Since water collects at the bottom of the filter housing (should water be in the system), water will be sucked-up through the straw, when a vacuum source is attached to the "access fitting" on top of the filter housing / cover. I hope that made sense. Replacement is pretty much the same as in this video... you can use a vacuum pump to check for water before you remove the filter cover. When installing the new filter, make sure that the straw is attached correctly (you will see how once the old filter is out of the housing). Run / activate the fuel pump(s) several times, to purge air out of the system.
@@EXOVCDS Thank you very much for your time, prompt response and guidance. I'll let you know how it went. Have a nice weekend.
@@EXOVCDS Finally got my VCDS cable and downloaded service manual from VW web page. Procedure was exactly the same as in the video and your explanation in the previous comment. Three minutes running the fuel pump with VCDS and car fired up immediately without any problem. No issues during the test drive. Once again thank you very much for your guidance!!! Gracias compadre!!!
@@robertopriego3545 thank you for the update!
I have a 2014 jetta tdi, is there any way to replace the fuel filter without the software? Thanks
Read through the comments or google for DIY filter changes. I do this for a living, so I have the equipment... and can not suggest / recommend alternative methods.
Question brother, my wife's 15' Passat TDI (CVCA) will show almost 3/4 tank after filling up and about 40 mi down the road. Car is not throwing any codes. Is this common? All maintenance up to date.
I don't think so... not that I am aware of. What's the overall miles per tank she's getting? I don't know what it should get, but if it's not a reasonable number, check with the dealer about any issues (that they might be aware of).
... and a big like! ;-) Hold on...YT flagged songs??? 2014.... da war die letzte Weltmeisterschaft ;-)) Hehe...
When I removed the fuel filter I eliminate the diesel also and clean the housing filter. After this I used VCDS and I run the pump like 2 times, 5 minutes in total, but when I tried to start the car, it was very hard, it didn't for the first time. On the second time, I left like 6-7 seconds until it starts. Should it be ok?
I always fill the filter housing before I use VCDS to purge the system. When there is too much air in the filter housing, that could cause issues. I don't know if things are ok or will be ok on your engine... time will tell.
Even if I purge this air with VCDS before?
When all the air is out, the engine should start as if nothing was ever done... you must have had some air left in the system. If it starts good now, the next time you change the filter, fill the container as much as you can before you close the lid... then run vcds to make sure all air is out.
@@EXOVCDS not always, as you didn't fill it in this particular case...
I always prime 3 times with vcds engine channel 035 and have no problems with air. And also cleaning the filter house and sucking all diesel out.
Can the fuel pressure not be primed by just cycling to the on position a few times, does that tool lower the pressure output of the pump to reduce "pressure shock" when priming? In your opinion is VW corporate making any progress on improving there reliability with there new releases? Enjoy watching your videos!
I don't know all the specifics for all the different systems... I do know that not all vehicles will cycle the fuel pump "every time" the key is cycled. So relying on turning the key a few times, is not a safe thing to do with these engines (in my opinion). All I can say is, don't fill them up with gasoline or run the system dry... we have not seen any come in for major repairs yet. Thanks for watching & taking the time to comment!
*****
I work at a VW dealership and I have seen a handful come in with gas in diesel conditions. Not pretty and very expensive for the clean diesel engines. I don't know if the high pressure pumps are available to order from the aftermarket but I know VW pumps are order blocked and have to be called in with a VIN. It is quite the procedure but we haven't had one for a while.
So listen to Thomas. Don't let them run dry or with gasoline. It is a 5 digit repair job.
mischief007 Hi, thanks for sharing your dealer experience! We haven't yet had a "gas in diesel" repair yet on the new common rail systems. The service manuals suggest looking for shavings and doing a flush if no shavings are found. Might be cheaper to buy a used car at 5 figures!
I know Thomas. The worst part is VW tracks these misfuels so the car gets a bad rep once it gets reported. Even worse for the customer it is all customer pay but as you said, depending on what the customer did. Filled it but never put the key, just drain the tank, check the lines and replace filter. Anything after that gets expensive quickly. I want to say we've had about 4 since I started working there.
How young people are
I have a problem with the Tiguan
Engine oil is ubiquitous
I do not know what's the reason
Can you tell me the probable causes of engine oil spread?
Thank you
Not much we can do about that. =(
Hi, I suppose RM stands for the return line to the filter. Do you know why isn't it sufficient to have just one return line to the tank? what's the purpose of having another return line to the filter?
Fluid circulating back through the filter helps warm up the fuel.
@@EXOVCDS Thanks a million!
Good time to prime the filter with Diesel Purge, or not on a common rail TDI?
Yes, you can.
Do you know if I’ll have to activate the fuel pump for a 2014 Passat TDI 2.0 when I change the filter?
Yes... it's recommended.
Is it possible to use torque pro elm327 and use vcds to perform the fuel pump task to bleed air out? If yes then I won't have to buy another obd adaptor
bondasfaq I'm not familiar with the torque pro & elm327 combination. I use VCDS & Snap-On scanners. I've heard of people getting by without a scan tool... I wouldn't recommend it, but you can probably find some diy articles online.
Hello I do have octavia 2014 , what can happend if will be filter exchanged and I do not have software to reset init pump? IS necessary with octavia ? thx

how did you bleed the air out manuel :?
Thank you for video. My sister has a Passat 2.0 TDI 81 kW (2008 - 2010 model in UK). I do not have any scan tools to prime the fuel system. When the new fuel filter is inserted into the housing, if I were to pour additional diesel from a container until the level reaches right to the top of the housing before attempting to start the engine, will I eliminate the risk of damaging the fuel pump?
At minimum I would fill the filter housing with as much fuel as possible.... then, cycle the key a few times before starting.
I have a 2011 jetta tdi and will start soon servicing this vehicle myself. 1500 for a scan machine maybe a little too much for my budget. What other tool would you recommend?
OBDEleven... upgraded to Pro.
Google search.
To be clear... I do not have OBDEleven or ever used it, but I hear it does almost everything that VCDS can do. I was at work when I first replied (didn't have time to write much).
thank you for the video.I got vw touran tdi 2004.do I have to activate the fuel pump after this as well?please can someone advise.thank you
If it is PD engine... no, common rail yes.
instablaster.
Activate the fuel pump via basic setting or output test Is the same thing?
They both do the same thing... sort of.
Basic settings will run the pumps longer and in the dropdown menu (when selecting fuel pump electronics), VCDS will say something like (to fill fuel system after injector or other fuel system component replacement)... where as in output tests, it simply runs the pumps for 30 seconds.
@@EXOVCDS which system do you prefer to use? i use OBDeleven is it the same? how long do you run the pump? I replaced the filter and activated the pump from the besic settings. when I turned the car back on it turned badly for a while ... then it stabilized. do you think I did damage
OBDEleven can do the same as VCDS... I'm always worried about trapped air, so I run the pumps 6 to 10 times. During the first activation, you can hear gurgling at the pump by the coolant reservoir and feel roughness when holding / touching fuel lines that go into & out of the filter (the roughness, I think, is air rushing through the lines. So basically I activate the pumps until I don't hear / feel the roughness. You can distinctly hear / feel the difference (or it might just be in my head LOL). I don't know if damage was done, time will tell. At your next filter change, check for debris / metal shavings.
@@raffaeleamoroso9274 Did you need the pro upgrade to run both pumps? Did everything turn out okay?
When you say B7 is this the European or the NMS US model? I have a 2012 Passat TDI in the US. which should be a variant of the B7 Europe version. What was the mileage before you changed out the Fuel Filter?
I'm in Canada... North American market vehicle. Don't recall the mileage... would have to check. I think 20k miles is the suggested interval for fuel filter replacement. The Passat looked like the one in this wiki.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Passat
So I labeled the video B7.
***** Thanks, the NMS is for the NA market which a lot of people are confused. Both the B7 and NMS do look similar but are two different platforms. Although the NMS it is nicked name the B7 on some forums.

If you have electric steering, it doesn't use hydraulic fluid.

I'm curious, is there no way to energize the two pumps without the scanner/software, or directly powering each pump locally (other videos suggest disconnecting each pump and powering them externally)?
On all of the the vehicles I've worked on, it was possible to remove the pump relay(s) and jump across the contacts - isn't this possible on the TDI(s)?
I would think so, but I have never tried it that way (on older models yes, I have activated the fuel pump by removing the relay and bridging the slots or by manually applying power at the pump connector). Using a scan tool is the easy way on newer models... if I have the tool to do it the easy way, I'm gonna do it the easy way.
If you know where the pumps or the relays are, you can activate them directly at those locations and see if that will work. If someone has already posted success on a DIY write-up, then it must work.
Thomas EXOVCDS
With the VCDS enthusiast package at $200, I don't mind jumping across a relay socket to change my fuel filter.
I'm sure the other ways to cycle the pumps Will work - it just seems taking the back seat out and connecting the pump to another power source makes powering up the pump more work than it needs to be - even without VCDS.
Thanks for the reply! ✌
Thomas EXOVCDS
a little more reseach explains why the relay socket procedure isn't addressed, the relays are above the ecm up under the dashboard.
removing the back seat is easier, lol!!
VCDS is a bit pricy, but well worth the money if one has a VAG Vehicle that they want to maintain / look after... and I totally get that not everyone will spend the money on something if it is not used on a regular basis.
Thanks for the info!
when u take off the fuel filter, then u need to eliminate the diesel in the fuel filter housing
You can empty it out if you want to... make sure to prime the system after the new filter is installed.
@@EXOVCDS Is there a way to prime without a scan tool? Will turning the ignition to on without starting it prime the pump?
@@greganson3627 On some TDI & Gasoline vehicles... simply unlocking the car and opening the driver door will cycle the fuel pump. Turning the key to ON "should" cycle the pump, but it might not cycle it a second time when turning the key to OFF and back to ON again. A wiring diagram will tell you where the fuel pump relay is, which you can then remove, to trigger the pump with a jumper wire. I guess there are many ways to go about it... I use a scan tool because it's the easiest & quickest (for me).
Is hard to search at that page...what is price for cable? And full version of sw is then available even it cost 1000 usd +?

Zx10r Power It is best to use the software to bleed any air out of the fuel system. Some DIY posts (google to find them) say that it can be done without the software / fuel pump activation... I do not want to try that though.
how to bleed the air out manuel :?
Fill the filter housing as much as possible. Tighten the cover into place. Cycle the ignition key on / off several times. Wait 1 minute between each on/off cycle. You should hear the electric fuel pump. You can also lock the car, unlock the car and open the door.. fuel pump should prime. Do any or all that often enough... it might be enough to bleed the air out. Scan tool method is best.
