Great video gem! Very informative. I would just like to say my husband was in a wheelchair temporarily after many surgeries & we had to fly twice while he was in a wheelchair. Once to Florida & once to Scotland. For anyone with limited mobility or using a wheelchair please don’t worry or stress about flying. We found those flights some of the easiest we have done & other passengers and airport staff couldn’t have done enough to help us! Book the airport assistance & it will be a breeze ! Happy travels everyone x
Perfect timing! I will be flying 15 hours solo from Kansas to the Netherlands in a few weeks. This video is so helpful, especially the carry on bag tips.
I live in the USA, and I am going to Liverpool in the next several months. I am terrified that my wheelchair is going to get lost during the second leg of my flight in NY. I am also hearing impaired.
I recently went on a plane for the first time with a pair of mobility crutches and I was surprised at how easy it was. I can't believe I was nervous about it! The staff was all very kind about explaining to me where to go and what to do with them and if I needed any extra help.
And pls don’t forget if you’re on a package holiday when you get of the plane instead of a coach to your hotel your holiday company will book you a private taxi to your hotel and back to the airport just tell them to book you one when you book your holiday with them you will need your blue disability badge to show them for this taxi 🚖
I want to go to England again! Waaaay back in 2004, when I was a senior in high school, my school offered a trip to England and Ireland. I had THE BEST time! And I bet it would be just as fun as an adult :)
We spent four days in London :) And four days in Ireland, but we did more traveling there. I would like to go back to England and see more, didn't get to see this "English countryside" I keep hearing about!
I used to have greasy skin on my face but since I started face cleansing with Pampers Baby Wipes the skin on my face is lovely. Pampers can also be used on peristomal skin with no loss of adhesion.
Not specific to wheelchair users, but also including any necessary toiletries in your carry-on if you're checking your luggage is another thing to consider - more than once, my 2nd flight has gotten canceled (but my suitcase went ahead on the next available flight, that, of course, had no seats left) and I was stuck in the layover city overnight with only my backpack, and having the toiletries, as well as a change of clothes, saved my rear. I do it every time I fly, even if I'm only going to be in the air for 3 hours (total - 2 separate flights). It was also nice to have them both times I flew to Europe - I could freshen up and change clothes in the morning on those trans-Atlantic flights.
Great video Gem. I totally agree about fluid reduction as a method to not needing to visit those tiny airplane toilets, they are seriously a nightmare. You had some great tips for what to put into your flight bag and a change of clothes is a must, I always take a pack of baby wipes as well to just clean up sticky hands and faces or as a way to freshen up your face after a sleep or at the end of the flight. I really wish there was some way to stay in your wheelchair when onboard, that way there is non of those silly aisle chairs you get strapped into, no hauling you around like you are a sack of potatoes to get into your plane seat. You know you will be comfortable then really importantly you know your own chair is safe and will turn up at the other end in one piece. There is talk of allowing people to remain in their own chair but obviously there will need to be adaptions to the plane plus safety issues but it would be good.
Yes that would be good. I would do it on short flights, but I don't think I could stay in it long haul, as It doesn't recline. (but i bet you would get more room!!! Ahhhh baby wipes, good call, Im passed the baby wipe stage with my daughter but they are so "handy" ;) xx
Wheelsnoheels - Gem Hubbard I have a powerchair for when I’m out and about and it has a recline and tilt function to it so I would be far more comfortable than in a airplane chair. If I was in my manual chair though I agree I would only be able to manage a short flight.
Good advice video Gem, 1 big tip for everyone wanting there chair to be brought back to the plane door on landing. Always make sure you get the gate security ticket from the departure gate before boarding the plane. Make sure the ticket is put on your wheelchair where viewerable. This should insure you chair is brought to the plane door on landing. If it is not, refuse to get into the airle wheelchair until your chair is brought to the door. This way the plane is being held up they get your chair quicker than if they off load you and your sitting waiting in the gangway entrance to the plane/airport.plus you will be much more comfy in the plane seat than the airle wheelchair. Also anouther tip take any moving aids with you. And take wheelchair cousins footplates etc onto plane with you. Note to you get a free medical bag as wel, I have recently done some info videos on flying to as we had to fly to say goodbye to hubbys dad and the funeral etc. Hope these tips can help others. Hope your doing good to! Hugs, Stacey K @ RawAbilityLife
I have just found out that I am not the only one who takes samples of skin care products and saves them for trips. I always thought that it was weird when I would have the sample packets from stores or magazines.
An extra outfit or two for you is a good idea, because I’ve had my luggage sent to Malan instead of Moline Illinois before lol. Also, if you have a service dog, I’m sure you know to take maybe several servings of food in your carry on with you and any medication and anything else your dog might need if you get stuck somewhere.
fdhicks69 uh no. I pretty much had to spend my whole week long trip talking to the airport to get my luggage back. Finally, they agreed to fed ex (I think that’s what it was) it to me and I got my luggage on the last day I was at my friend’s house. 😱
Ah man, thats horrible, and something that always scares me. My wheelchair got left in Singapore, while I flew on to Sydney!!! After 30 hours of travel I lost it lol. It arrived the next day though. x
Wheelsnoheels - Gem Hubbard That would be a lot worse than losing luggage 😱😱 but at least you got it back quickly. I’ve honestly had a lot of bad experiences flying by myself and one bad Amtrak experience. Then magically, somehow, they know how to do everything properly if I fly with able bodied people. 🤔
They strap you in those aisle chairs so tight that the only thing missing is a big bright sign saying "You shall not escape!" I am travelling to Florida next year, but I really want to visit Mexico :)
Gem, wonderful video. I've traveled a LOT but most of it was pre-disability. Back then I was able to pack up to 3 weeks in my carry on and that was it. I was zippy lol. But nowadays, I have to check items, because I travel with my wheelchair AND my service dog. Thanks so much for the tips. I have written down a bunch of your recommendations! My next trip that I want to go on a holiday to would be New Zealand and Australia.
How long would it take on the plane for you to get there? I know I didn't go to Australia this year (24 plus hours transit) as it was just too much for me. xx
Hey, first you have to find out which type you prefer as there are Pampers that you need to stick/glue together after putting on or are like underpants. Those which are like underpants you can put on just like underpants (might be the best if you train putting on underpants/those pampers in a sitting position before the flight) but it also depends on your strength and hand function. Those glue/stick ones might be easier to put on in a sitting position when you don't have the strength but you have the hand function as you have to somehow reach and grab those sticking parts. If there is no disabled toilette on the flight you don't have the handles to hold yourself up and push yourself up, you may need to use the toilet seat to do so. If you're unable to do this but you have to fly alone you may consider ultra absorbent Pampers as you will only have to change them right before boarding and right after getting out of the plane. (In this case make sure that you will cover your genital with something to prevent it from getting a draught/draft from the airplane air-conditioning because this might get you some infections or other problems down there because everything will be wet in your Pampers.) If you can catheter as well then you could consider getting a bladder catheter that you can insert and remove on your own. That's how they handle it who are in my care. (:
I would advise those who need catheter/bowel related products and medication is to take all that supply in hand luggage incase your suitcase goes missing, unfortunately for some like myself this will mean no room for little luxury’s but the essential things for living is with you.
I want have traveled only as far as New York, but I'd like to go to Canada, San Diego, Asia. My bladder isn't the best and I have a little hole it in that makes it hard to hold in liquids. I have to wear incontinent pads but sometimes its not enough because I also tend to urinate in them a lot when i'm nervous or excited so I soil myself too quickly. I try to limit my liquid intake and I do get changed before and after a flight but I've never gone longer than seven hours on a plain so I don't know how I'd fair with anything longer, I figure that not direct flights like stop overs would work the best for my bladder, but the whole thing just makes me so anxious.
Thank for sharing. Have you ever considered a cruise? I know someone who can't fly due to not being able to use the bathroom, so they cruise everywhere. The boats are really accessible too so I hear. x
I'd love to but sadly both my best friend and my boyfriend get violently sea sick :( If I went with anyone else I would go for a cruise but usually its them I go with so boats are out
Oh I'm hearing you. I actually feel sick in my wheelchair if I'm being pushed and look down at my phone. Im terrible. Although the Studeron I mention in the video is really good. xx
thats me in a car, and i'm terrible with my phone XD I get busy hands so they need to be doing something. more often then not its my phone. but I don't get sea sick which is odd. I'll have to tell my friends about that stuff though!
So I'm gonna be on the plane for 24 hours... I can't walk so how would I manage with using the toilet? I go to the toilet like 20 times a day.... I have bladder problems.
You have to use a plane? I figured you would have something more exotic available what with being magical. :) I'm not much of a traveller. But before I die I want to stand on Hadrian's Wall.
Great tips! The flying with medications is very important.here is the name of one for Europe that I used for my Germany trip last year. reise_scheng_formular.pdf. keep everything in the drugstore bottles for the flights AND remember that some OTC meds in the USA might be illegal or controlled by Rx in the country you are going to. Google is your friend.

I know it is kinda off topic but do anybody know a good site to stream newly released series online ?

Wheelie26, we must get Sir James Dyson to design a airplane that will allow wheelchair users to stay in their chairs.
