Great comparison, nice to see the little Lotus sticking it to the big guns. Low power, low weight, enjoy it on road, enjoy it on track, run it for cheap, and it actually fits in your garage!
One of my favourite vids so far. Great to see genuine reactions from each of the cars. I knew the Lotus would give the most grin factor. I absolutely loved owning my 240👍
After watching this several times, it is quite apparent which marque still pulls your heart strings. Time to get back to Lotus. And if you do and buy an S2 Exige of this vintage, I'll share how I set up the Exige you drove so very well at Watkins Glen last season. Great video, James - throughly enjoyed it... Just spectacularly well done... And oh - nice Porsche Club Northeast Region USA Instructor shirt... ;) Just sayin'... ;)
Thanks for the review, really good work - i can agree with your comments. the GT3 isnt as torquey as you think it should be and its long legged but the induction noise is great.
Man I always liked Lotuses. Too bad the only car available here in PR is the Evora(which I also love). I wish I can get a 2zz Elise at some point in my life. Your reaction to that Exige is priceless. I envy your fun.
Excellent video!!! I love all three cars very much but I think we can all agree that the Lotus is the best even with so little power. I wonder what would happen on a larger power band...
Can’t believe how long legged that Porsche gearing is, on the road you’d only use 1st and 2nd gears 🤣....but Just imagine what an Exige Roadster S would have been like round that track...truly glorious fun with the roof down :-) Now, go and get another Lotus for goodness sake you know you want to
Knew you'd jump in Lotus first!! So would I after Ive had a 2010 Exige S Performance 240 and then a V6 3.5 thereafter, kinda think 2010 was the better one, not overall but for fun and noise
@Jeb Swarf The 111R engine (or Exige S2 NA, I have one) is good but the stock gearing is catastrophic. Supercharging helps to hide that by adding mid range torque but it adds weight an removes the fun of the NA engine. You need at least a shorter final ratio to wake up the car. The best modification is shorter final gear + modified 3 and 4th ratios.
@Jeb Swarf I installed 4.8 ratio in my C64 in place of the way too long 4.5 stock. So problem solved :-) According to Wiki, C64 stock final drive and gearing is the same for all cars it was installed in. Including the Corolla TS. The resultant gearing is shorter because tyre radius is smaller in the Corolla TS (195/55 16) than in the Lotus (225/45 17).
Great video. I know it's not the point of the video, but it would be very interesting see how much of a time difference these cars have around that track, to just you know put things into perspective.
Neil Murphy I never had a series 1 car myself, but from what I heard the K-series engines in those had a habit of blowing head gaskets quite often. The Toyota engined cars are better for reliability I think.
Jay... I would never presume to tell you what to do but... RUclips is choc full of BMW content and nowhere near enough Lotus content... and you do Lotus content really well... so if, I may, please could you get another Lotus... PS, I run a BMW and I still would rather see a Lotus on here... or at east something as rare... love the channel either way mate..
The steering feel thing with the gt3 is odd comment. I beleive it though. Lotus are very purpose built cars. So my thinking is why even then bother with an all in one like m3? idealy you want something light and small for good price like the lotus. And a daily that can go anywhere and fits your family/friends. So a lotus and defender would be a perfect combo.
@@JayEmmOnCars true very lil space to put stuff. Great videos btw man. Youre really honest about every car. That gt3 steering for example would NEVER EVERRR be said by a mainstream journalist. Proper shit my man. Hopefully your channel explodes.
To Lotus willyriders .... I love lotus too , but putting a charged M3 and GT3 on a such a small track that suits Exige is never going to be a fair comparison . Do same test at Silverstone and we'll talks later.
Cletus, if this is intended to be a satirical pastiche of the usual US semi-hysterical review, then it is brilliant. However, if you're being serious, it's terrible.🤔🤔🤔
Feel free to explain how I am wrong, but I have the dyno graphs of my car before and after, and I've driven enough of them, it seems to do just that to me
JayEmm on Cars Yea you’re not alone, supercharging has long been referred to in that way, centrifugals shouldn’t be included especially for high revving Motors as it’s just a turbo that’s compromised to make for easier install/packaging. If it enhanced the natural character the dyno chart would look more or less identical, the shape of the curve unchanged, just higher numbers, like a proper e92 with a proper supercharger results in. Power delivery and character is unchanged, you just get more power at lower revs/less throttle. The centrifugal completely alters the torque curve and makes it look like the power curve, it looks like you’d expect a single turbocharged e92 tunes for up top power to look because that’s what it is in effect. I have no issue if people want to take a historic motor that’s loved for its high power flat torque curve and make it behave like something else. I don’t understand it but hey, what I don’t get is how completely altering the nature of the engine and it’s behavior is somehow enhancing its natural character. I know it seems pedantic but yea
This is nothing like a turbocharged car. The torque is obviously lacking low down and it is not suffering lag. It is obviously acting just as a supercharger does but adding a bit everywhere but mainly at the top end, the opposite of a turbo.
Great comparison, nice to see the little Lotus sticking it to the big guns. Low power, low weight, enjoy it on road, enjoy it on track, run it for cheap, and it actually fits in your garage!
Great to have you back in a Lotus, more please
Cool to see you back in a lotus James, you realise that these are your soul mate cars don't you???you look and sound at home... Time for another????
i realize I'm kinda randomly asking but do anybody know of a good website to watch newly released series online?
Rewatching (listening to) this a few weeks later -- still so good. Cheers James
Great review, proud to be an S2 Exige owner.. ❤️
Can you daily one? I think this'll be the decider between if I get one or an elise sport 220
Brad_0 Get an Exige if you can.
They are rarer and more purposeful looking.

What a wonderful video. I am getting a 2008 Solar Yellow Exige next week. This really has me stoked.

What a fun video, looked a glorious day to be on track and yes I think we all agree you need a new Lotus to play with:)
Great Video! Very honest, and great impressions on the differences between the three cars. I guess in an ideal world you'd have all three flavours!
Great review. I own a 2008 Lotus Elise SC and a 2007 Porsche GT3. Best of both worlds.
S2 Exige is such a good value for the amount of fun it brings.
Your best video to date JM. Great to see you enjoying a track day so much. Cool cars. Very different but am fun and fast.

the top 3 cars that i want to have in my garage...how has it taken so long to see this video!
Great video Jay. Well balanced comparison.
You know the Lotus is the best in driver experience. Now go buy another one!!
Thanks for this, James! I think I enjoyed the Lotus the most. Funny how an Exige and your modified M3 are about the same price..
Welcome Home JayEmm!

Just watched the video again!
That Lotus ❤️🤪
You sound a bit like Alan Partridge in places.
I don't know how people put up with brakes squeaking like that. I would have to get them out and grease the pad backs etc up.

Not many better cars for the track than Exige S if any.
Nothing out there drives as good as an Elige on a track. Nothing! Thanks for sharing.

You preferred the sound of the 2ZZ to the V6? That's a bit disappointing, I've never driven an S3 and was hoping it sounded better than me old S2.
@Jeb Swarf The 111R engine (or Exige S2 NA, I have one) is good but the stock gearing is catastrophic. I love the lotus i love that supercharger and the glorious sound from that Toyota 1.8L engine is that still as reliable whit that supercharger
The engines are built by Yamaha and are absolutely bulletproof really... I had a cup 240 and it made peak power at 8250rpm! Revs for days

I’m buying another Lotus this year end of story.
What exhaust on the exige s. Mine failed static at snetterton last Monday evening at 105db stage 2 lotus silencer.
Any comments on 997 GT3 vs 996 GT3? Steering better in 996?
Been too long since I drove a 996 GT3 to be honest about jt
After the M3 Exhaust Noise was played my wife complained about being too loud :-D - You have no idea how that thing sounds to my speakers :-))))
Which track is that?

sick video

Get another lotus dude, it’s the one that made you come alive...plus if you get one I can have a proper go
Can anything beat a Porsche GT car??? Is it possible? I don’t think so
fellow looks like Stig's American cousin.
Lotus no doubt for that track, the GT3 could also be used, but the M3 is just to big and heavy for such track without long straights.
....LOTUS for the WIN.........
Sell the BMW, buy the Lotus and borrow the GT3 once in a while.
that mezger engine tho...

Nobody is saying that the Lotus would win in a race. Comments are on experience and fun, rather than.. your car is faster than mine.
Saw the m3 on ebay. A lot of car for the money. Good luck selling
