What many today may not understand is that the midwest features a high abundance of some of the most fertile soils and favorable growing climates in the world. The “shared misery” is sooo true as someone who lived in Wisconsin for the first 23 years of my life.
A decade-plus later now living in Utah, it’s so much better being somewhere that still gets lots of snow (way more, actually) and has four seasons but way more sunshine and happiness - with the beautiful outdoors. It’s the perpetual grey nothing skies that make me seriously depressed in Wisconsin.
Aside from those that settled down with careers and kids, all my old friends are just “doing alright,” as they say but never great.
The overall gloominess permeates everything and infects everyone’s mood. In short: There’s a reason why alcoholism is preferable to raw doggin’ reality when your old industrial town is bleak and you haven’t seen the sun in a month.

West of the Mississippi and in the middle is the Great Plains, my guy. I assume you are in like Iowa or Missouri? Learned that in elementary school. May have changed (I'm old)
Basic districts of the country were always: Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Great Plains, Rockies/Mountains, Southwest, Northwest, and the 2 freaks (AK & HI)
Of course, you can sub divide those... like Southeast and Gulf coast states or share... like Northwest and Southwest both form the Pacific states (that also brings in the 2 freaks)
But as far as I was taught, and have helped my little ones learn... Midwest is still considered the states East of Mississippi and North of the Ohio rivers, respectively.
Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin are the core states. Some maps may include Pennsylvania or Minnesota.
Basically, I consider what Kyle is describing as the Midwest is often called the "Rust Belt" nowadays.

I keep that hate inside for the winter. In the summer I keep it inside. BUT - when I'm sweating buckets installing ductwork in some 100 year old attic on the hottest day of the year, its not sweat. That is the simmering of the hate. After the summer, I am left with a chuck of %100 pure, concentrated, non-gmo, free-range HATE. That little chunk of hate burns red hot all winter long. Most people I know are fine with their life here and that usually motivates them to be scheduling more events and vacations and they're some of the more better mentally adjusted people I've met. Another trope to explore are the people that are from out of state that move here and then end up miserable/stuck. They're the ones you need to watch out for... The only real drag about living in the Midwest is that its harder to find and meet new or different people here. Or how long it takes to travel to other places.

My philosophy living in the Midwest is that you can easily move, so don’t complain

I had to grow up in WI.
From my experience people are miserable, I’m sure they disagree.
Everyone has depression, everyone drinks. Everyone wants to be like someone else or will do anything to crap on someone else to get a raise or their job.
I came back to CA as soon as I could after I paid for college.
CA is obnoxious but nowhere near as bad as the Midwest. I couldn’t take it, and I only came back to CA because I can’t afford HI. 😂
Because I’m a loser who had to go to school in the Midwest. At least I don’t have depression or drink.

That’s not the Midwest’s fault, you have issues.

CA kinda sucks people wise. Nobody gives a fuck about anyone else, but in a disappointing, indifferent way. Also the Midwest has some of the best state schools in the country, so you’re a loser for lots of other reasons

Life kinda sucks no matter who you are, or where you live. Feels like some stereotyping going on here. I love your humor Kyle, but this is observational subjectivity. Opinions stated as factual. Or maybe just opinions?
