    Just to add to the video..You want to make sure that the metal wire from the frame of the back seat doesn't touch the battery terminals. By the metal touching, it causes an electrical short and it would start a fire. Some batteries sell a plastic separator to prevent something like that from happening. You can also make your own by laying a piece of a rubber mat on top of the terminals.

      I can vouch for that. Back in the early 80's my '59 started to smoke with a big fat ass sitting back there. Horse hair stinks when it's smoldering.

    I have a 66 that was converted to a 55 oval years ago, when I bought the car the 3 fold ragtop was in really bad shape. I sent it to Grumpies out in California, and they made it brand new, they put Teflon squares in place of the compacted leather so that after a few slides it opens and closes with very little effort. Thanks for the videos, you do very nice work.

    Watching this video made me want to take my beetle for a drive right now! To bad it`s standing in the garage without fenders, apron and the engine out. It`s a fun car to wrench on, but so much more enjoyable to drive.

    Little scary driving these cars in 2019 traffic, last time I drove my 69 was 1988, roads were little safer then, today...downright dangerous, stay on the back roads if possible, imo. Thanks for the ride, your a brave man.

    Hi Chris .... great videos !! Question on the rag tops. at 16:40 You mentioned that a bi-fold and tri-fold are different when opening and closing - that the bi-fold is better because of mechanics involved in the top's rollers. Could the "rollers" or mechanics be swapped so that we could have a tri-fold rag top with the rollers of the bi-fold for better operation ??

      Tough one. I am sure there is a way to make it, but I have never seen it.

    I love these videos. I've had a 59 beetle with the 36 horse engine for almost 20 years it had been restored shortly before I bought it. The man who kept it going for me is a retired mechanic who worked at a vw dealership in the 60s and 70s but had back surgery and is no longer able to work on it for me. I have 2 problems 1it is leaking oil right at the pulley. 2 if I I don't start it or drive it for a few days the battery is completely dead. It still has the 6 volt system. not too long replaced the battery. Any thoughts

    • @classicvwbugs
      @classicvwbugs  5 лет назад

      Hey my friend, yeah usually if you have oil coming from the pulley, it's a good indicator that the bearings are shot. Do you have any end play? Also, check my video out to see if you have a draw in the electric system for your battery draining.

    • @thomasgary1219
      @thomasgary1219 5 лет назад +1

      Chris Vallone Thanks for the advice I really appreciate it. As fate would have it the mechanic I mentioned called me today and said he feels up to doing some work, I told him what was going with the oil leaking and he said he's gotta 40 horse on a stand ready to go in the car while he rebuilds the 36.Anyways thanks Chris.

    me again, very pleasant relaxing video. My current 69 stnd has the factory air conditioning part number VW240 2w40mph) Back in the60/70s midwest, not sure of my bug's HP - I had a hill that I would go down at 70mph plus just to ensure 30-35 mph at the top. Big rig truckers were not as nice or forgiving as they are now. Lastly regarding your rag top - aren't you fearful of ripping it off at high speeds >>85mph? Does the wind on the rag top create a neg pressure causing flight? Nice enjoyable video

    I am curious as to how enjoyable a ragtop is. I had a Cavalier with a sunroof and it was not enjoyable. It just left direct heat from the sun in. Minimal airflow. A ragtop looks a bit larger then a sunroof so maybe there is more airflow. I have been in convertibles and if you are in the front seat they are great, but if you are in the back seat it is terrible. Same with a ragtop?
