Distant Worlds is a vast, pausable real-time 4X space strategy game. Experience the full depth and detail of turn-based strategy, but with the simplicity and ease of real-time, and on the scale of a massively-multiplayer online game.
Vast galaxies are made to order: up to 1400 star systems, with up to 50,000 planets, moons and asteroids. Galaxies are so deep, fun and immersive that you won’t want to finish the game. Build, expand and improve your empire while playing through one of the storylines, with victory conditions or in an open-ended sandbox mode.

Hmm loved the Honorverse books. Unlike most readers I've actually enjoyed the politics he put into it. Space battles are cool, but politics make it feel *real*
Join TRMN at www.trmn.org and explore the politics and universe even more!
yes, Michael, it does
Really derivative.
OH MY GOD!!! i love the entire series and this is going to be awesome!!!
Glad to hear it!
This is a fantastic up to date let's play. Thank you for doing this!
Thank you. All I can say is: it was my pleasure!
Very nice. I've been playing for nearly seven years and I learned something. I did not know you could specify the exact location of a space port by right clicking to construct it. I always use the button.
over the years this game as managed to get at the top of my list,i simply love it....i really love to play sandbox.this game have so much ways of being played...and with retreat eu, and 2 or 3 of the major its just fantastic
Yeah there is a comfortable feeling to sandbox games -- just play at your own pace.
Thank you for remembering our Lord an saviour Larry Monte
It's not a fitting Distant Worlds series without a moment in his honor.
The only reason I'm even here is because you're playing it. :P Nothing against your personal tastes in literature, but the Honorverse has always been a huge point of annoyance for me. But seeing you play Distant Worlds is awesome, so I'm watching :D The guy who writes the book series isn't bad, but by gosh I'm sick of most Sci-Fi writers going the extreme strawman route for justifying their conflicts. -_- That, and he's way too in love with his technology...
Well I don't want to come off as Weber's biggest fan or such, I actually find that his writing gets repetitive and he lacks a versatility or ... what's the word, like ability to write in different manners and different situations. For example. I think he is really poor at the romantic elements he attempts /cringe. Nonetheless, I really like the universe he created as a beautiful canopy for warfare, and the military aspects are fun to run with.
TortugaPower Forgive me, sir! I meant no such thing! :D I got from you a clear admiration from his works and accomplishments along with an agreeable (not that being agreeable matters a tad) set of critical feelings both positive and negative towards his works. I took no offense to your standpoint, and was merely conversing in a friendly sense, though lord knows it might have been hard to read such from my statements :P In all honesty, Weber's greatest crime in my eyes was the insistence on Dreadnoughts being greater than Battleships. I am the son of a navy man and a lover of all things naval combat; such a position is pure heresy to me, though I understand the simple reality. That is to say, Dreadnought is a far more intimidating name than Battleship :P Still, in addition to the other weaknesses of Weber's writing (late storyline romance is particularly atrocious), this critical blunder had me seething XD Remember, if you ever doubt my tone, assume it is meant in harmless jest.
Haha, HOW DARE YOU QUESTION ME, PLEB! /sarcasm If you think dreadnoughts trumping battleships is worse than recycling a plot narrative multiple times, we'll have to agree to disagree ;)
I actually enjoy the ship classification system, although this stems from my love of Babylon 5 (which had the same ranking of space ships I believe, dreadnought > battleship).
History wise, the dreadnought was a clunky out of date battleship, but in space the battleship is a clunky not as powerful dreadnought
wow how many months do we need to learn to play this, so many tabs and options
I've crushing my head against the wall with Aurora 4x (and I managed to learn a lot) and now I come here because I love space strategy games.
People have really been asking for an Aurora 4X series, so I think one of those my be forthcoming sometime "soon"
TortugaPower I'll be watching it if you play it. These games can be fun to watch others play.
Ooohhh a playthrough! Looking forward to this!
If this one moves too slow for you (it was a bit slow), Larry Monte has some great LPs on his channel too!
Scattered, no real playlist, and modded.
And here I thought I was the only person who enjoys playing games vanilla.
There's a whole World of Warcraft movement that says otherwise. But I prefer vanilla. And if I use mods, it's Total Conversion, Stellaris New Horizons, for example.
Nice video. Plus, it puts together my favorite sci-fi unvierse with one of my favorite 4x games, so perfect. By the way, the colors of Manticore's flag are red and green :)
Ah, that explains the bright red on their coat of arms! Well, at least I got it half right ;)
I think the Star Kingdom of Manticore is the most powerful star nation in the Honorverse.
Oh yeah. Tortuga taking off the tutorial gloves. Some AI will be quivering in their little booties right about now. Looking forward to the series.
We shall dance on their corpses! Or, perhaps, play a totally peaceful game and win by trade and diplomacy! ... No, that's definitely not going to happen.
Ooo I love this game. :)
Tortuga does stuff other than RtW!
Recent Distant World lets play is being done by Sabouts, he is also pretty cool !!
Yes, not only a DW series, but he has a lot of good content similar to mine (CDDA, for example). I'm already subscribed, but future comment-readers should check him out :)
Any Chance of getting this "mod" map so i can play with it too?
The mod is just a rename of the ship types, nothing else. The map is randomly generated.
I've enjoyed all the honorverse books so far
I was quite happy with the first five or so, but they got a little repetitive for me. I think I probably just needed a break from his style after flying through his books one after another.
Oh yeah, some DWU. That's good :)
Aurora is also veeerryyy sloooowww.
Especially when someone like me plays it (I mean, I'm slow as it is...)
aurora is great great great....and a work of love of a single soul mind you...but for 'easier' more fancy dun dwu is there for us
I enjoyed your video. You can tell you love your hobby.
Playing video games? Quite! :)
I know those feels. I just picked up Distant Worlds Universe from Steam (on sale this weekend) because I watched your tutorial and felt it would be a good buy.
trying to learn... finding difficult, but really cool game
My tutorial on DW:U might be better for learning.
Hi Tortuga, which game are you referring to at 00:45? I'm not a native English speaker and I can't make out its name.
Aurora 4X, which is actually my next upcoming series! (Out this week, even)
Thanks four your answer, I'll be watching it!
Ahhh a Honorverse inspired series yessss. To bad mods is the best we will get from that universe in realm of games or non book media :(
And not even a mod in this playthrough, just a game setup to feel the same as that universe. But Distant Worlds is a great backdrop for any space -them- [edit: *theme*] since it's such a great game :)
The days where "authors just made a trilogy" were never a thing. You're looking at the past with rose-colored glasses. Whether it's Asimov's Foundation series, Smith's Lensman series, Frank Herbert's Dune series, etc.; many of the best authors made long running series of books. The idea of arbitrarily setting a story in a trilogy just to keep it a certain length is incredibly limiting to long-form storytelling.
Doesn't have to be a trilogy, but I think series with a known story arc going in are better. Something with an end in sight from the get-go.
The words you were looking for was Wilhelmine Germany, but if you're going to start with Bismarck's tenure as minister president then Victorian Era Prussia is just fine (feeling a bit nitpicky because you mentioned Germany :P).
That said, it has been a while since I've seen a video of yours since I've been busy these past few months. I do have free time now, even if it just for this week, which I will have to spend watching just to catch up and I have quite the backlog. Keep up the good work, you might just introduce me to another game I'd want to play :D.
In your absence, I've lost all sense of what I was trying to say about Germany in this video, although it must have had to do with the Andermanis. Welcome back! Catch up only on the stuff you enjoy, which is to say "enjoy your free time". I'd recommend the Command Ops series to you if you're not already familiar (based on my memory of our interactions) -- it's a fantastic little wargame :)
Thanks for the recommendation, I'll be sure to take it up once I've seen a bit more of this playthrough. Cheers!
isn't Manticore a binary system?
can you please create a playlist for the Distant Worlds: Universe let's play?
I believe it already has one, check the link in the description perhaps?
thank you. I dont know why, but i couldnt find it in the channels playlists.
I agree with the first 5 books with the possible inclusion of 6 & 7 if one is feeling generous are the better novels with a decline in quality & originality of the later books. I always thought the novels relate more to the Napoleonic period especially since Haven has a revolution and a subsequent reign of terror and more obviously a leader named Robert Stanton Pierre or Rob. S Pierre (Robespierre). Manticore is the Brits, the Andermani is Prussia & Silesia is the Holy Roman Empire. The Sollies as the U.S. is interesting though I had thought Grayson was more likely to be them, the religious divisions but mainly that they were the newest power but grew rapidly into a major power but it's only a theory Sorry for rambling.
That's a really cool theory and I immediately can see the similarities. I'm going to have to go back and rethink this now.
Where is this pdf for shio designs of which you speak? Is it still available?
I think I linked to it in the next video in this series? It is still available, I linked to it in my tutorial series, or you can probably search the Distant Worlds subreddit for it.
So is it better than Swords of the Stars?
That's a tough call. I have a great respect for both.
rip larry
he is back! :)
11:02 very American take
EDIT: 11:34 you got your history mixed up. The german empire existed until the end of WWI and after that came the Weimar Republic.
Weimar Republic. If no one else has said.
Agree mod make it dificult for person that watch and learn
I was hoping that the actual honorverse game would get off but I dont think it ever will
Was that the one called something like Honor Harrington's Combat Sim or Academy or something? It honestly didn't look very good, and I think that a good mod for DWU would do the series much greater justice (though it would like the tactical complexity). Sadly, no such mod exists to my knowledge.
TortugaPower no it was called rule the honor verse this was a few years back when talk initially came up it was gonna be a 4x strategy based around David Webber's Honor Harrington seires where you could pick youre nation or have one of youre own alot like rule the waves with in depth ship design but also caricature progress for youre starship captains but nothing has come out of the wood work unfortunately
Ah, I don't know anything about that. The one I was trying to remember is called "Saganami Island Tactical Simulator"
TortugaPower ya know i think the site for rule the honor verse is still on the web but idk haven't looked in a long time
There was a phone game on android called Tales of Honor: The Secret Fleet which was actually pretty fun, but the devs stopped supporting it and these days it only works on older android devices that haven't updated the OS.
Please do the aurora 4x!!!!
The problem with Aurora 4x is that I don't know the game _well_, and I should if I want to play it for other :) Maybe I'll learn it really well soon.
Love your stuff... I want to help out... 'Honour' - Honourverse!
They will have to rename the main character "Honour"
Grayson v masada = suni v Shia. Zealots murdering each other over a fiction for centuries
Shut the fuck up maggot
SKM is red and black
If you haven't read all the books then you are missing a lot of good material. Start Rolling Pods. Let's be about it.
Were you thinking Holy Roman Empire?
Sorry Alyssin, I no longer remember what this is in reference to!
the group thats like pre ww1 germany
It's hard to say now what was going on in my brain, but I _think_ I was referring to the Weimar Republic.
this series is only good if the first navy ship is hms fearless
How about the first ship that my character "Honor Harrington" captains will be the Fearless. Although didn't she serve as an LAC captain before that?
Meep?
Hello
i think u mean - the weimarer republik- german pre hitler area
Yes, that's the one I was trying to say.
I have 2 minutes so far and you better have picked the People's Republic of Haven you neo-barb.
I'm afraid I have disappointed you yet again :(
About 18 minutes watching before I actually see game play in this _Let's Play_ video? I expect some introduction, but don't bore your audience. The average RUclips view is about 15 minutes; you should have split the introduction into a separate video.
It's a fair point, Christopher. I'll probably turn away quite a few viewers like this, and 15 min is _quite_ long (even by my standards), but this is also chalked up to "my style". Cheers!
game with great potential, totally wasted. game's bad. lerning curve is not the problem, it is just that the game is bad: the economy is shallow, private sector is automated under every single type of government, ships automation is incredibly annoying (fuel, fleet management and so on is pure shit) colony management is boring, flat and unrewarding. this game is bad. Hopefully the second one coming out soon will be better, cause the concept is really good and if they manage to put togheter something worthy this time, it might be the definitive space 4x game
Seriously the best 4x ummmm no Stellaris holds that title buddy
Haha, well we're both right -- everyone is allowed to have their own opinion. Although everyone else I talked to about the Stellaris vs. DWU discussion has weighed in heavily in favor of DWU. Here's the discussion I'm referring to: www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4130699
dwu is better and it run even on shit computer
Stellaris is not the best ....Until they sell you 20 more dlcs to complete the actual game. KNEW they would do that crap.
James Barnes
DWU + retreat ue mod= very happy camper(and i repeat even with my shit cpu)
Sorry but for me Stellaris does not hold a candle against a DW:U :P
To be fair Stellaris is very different. But personally got bored of Stellaris but still want to get back to DW:U.
