I'd been face to face with John twice. First in the late sixties at a San Francisco dinner club called the Boarding House. John noticed I'd returned for a second show the following night and thanked me! The second was so weird... traveling with my dog in the late eighties, I stopped at a Salt Lake City music store to get some guitar strings. I put them on right then and there. Trouble was, I couldn't tune the damn thing. So, I was fiddling trying to get the thing sounding right (before Snarks) and getting nowhere. That's when this tall, bearded, long haired guy walks into the shop. He sees me struggling and asks., ""do you need some help?" "Yes" I said. He tuned it in the blink of an eye. But I said, "no, I wanted in Hawaiian slack key." He takes the guitar, twists the tuners and in a second, he says, "like this?" Then he disappears behind the counter and into the back of the store. The owner came back out. I said, "hey, where'd that guy who was just here go?" The owner mumbled something and went out of sight. Okay, I can't be positive that the long-haired guy was John.... but I'm betting that it was... My anonymous opinion of John is... he is one very cool person.
