I was out on my mobility scooter (on the pavement) at a quarter to midnight ... dressed for the cold (the temperature was below freezing) when a police car pulled up. I was asked where I was going. My explanation that I was returning home from a visit to the Supermarket caused one of the officers to ask where my shopping was. I hopped off and opened the bag on the back of the scooter ... where the shopping was. The officer noted that I didn't seem disabled ... and he asked me if it was my scooter. I explained that I'd bought the scooter some months earlier when I was less mobile than I am now. He then asked me why I was out shopping so late ... I explained that at that time of night very few customers were in the Supermarket. He asked me my name ... at which point I said I wasn't obliged to tell him. His manner had been like ... "talking to an old man" (I'm in my late 70s). Before he could respond I thanked him for his concern, moved my scooter a couple of feet and said: "I'm going home now. Is that OK?" He didn't reply ...so I drove off. A couple of hundred yards further on the police car reappeared. Without getting out the officer asked me where I lived ... I told him the name of the road, grinned, and said: "You can follow me if you want." Then drove off again. They did. I got a "police escort" home. It's nice to know that the cops are so concerned about the well-being of people like myself ... or maybe they were responding to the fact that I have long hair and a large beard?
