I realised today just how much June's art has influenced my own art. To me, 2016 was just a couple of years ago, I still feel like a young teen who just discovered the pokemon Nuzlocke content a bit ago. In reality I'm a grown adult in my 20s, pursuing art as a career path. 'Rea' has been a part of my artistic journey for nearly 8 years now and I can see a lot of tiny details in my own art, having come specifically from their artwork. It's an interesting discovery, but a fairly welcome one as it keeps motivating me to keep going.

I feel like me and June have the opposite problem when it comes to colors. I always go for the "ugly" colors as my base and go for more of a contrast but shy away from the brighter more fun colors. Watching Junes videos have made me realize this with the difference of my art being more diluted and almost calm while Junes art is bright and energetic, its more expressive. Its definitely something I want to work on now so i guess what im trying to say is thank you for showing me this!

  • @ribottostudio

Not related but kinda, but the moment I saw this pop up in my notifs, I thought of the jab Shadow makes in the trailer for Sonic 3 "You're a colorful bunch."
Cause see-see Shadow is a black furred hedgehog, making fun of the fact that Team Sonic are the primary colors. Shadow being black means he's quite literally void of color, since black itself ISN'T a color. It's the result of a lack of light.
It's why those red highlights look so good on him, and why he's so closely associated with the green chaos emerald (that and another major reason lol); the color contrasts really well with his own.
I'm. Such a color theory nerd.

  • @Mossheart1129
    @Mossheart1129 3 месяца назад +7

your advice in this video about needing "ugly" colors to make the brighter ones more beautiful is genuinely so helpful. i consider myself awful with colors, and i think this video is really going to help me to put more thought into my pieces rather than assume everything will be fine, or picking randomly and throwing an overlay on it to try and harmonize. thank you so much!

  • @babeysheep

I love color theory bc I hyperfixated on it for some reason lmao
My favorite color theory trick is just to slide the hue of a color when you make it darker (like with the first character example; shifting the red towards blue as it gets darker to make a purple color 👍)
And YES to using muddy colors; it's so important ❤

I love both of the pieces I particularly love both the line of action of Karinas body and tail aswell as both of there expressions
but the thing I wanted to call out that I appreciate the most is actually the way you basically put all your power into rendering Karinas hair and gold and left her body mostly with flats with 1 or 2 highlights and the big shadow.
Instead of lets say also rendering her tails scales like you did your boy Vaporeons pants you left it a flat fill with colored lineart and a small highlight and it works better.

Recently for layer modes I’ve been using a lot of lighter colour and darker colour I find that this makes the whole painting look more harmonious and the contrast works better for me it’s really fun to mess with

I took a color theory course at college a few years ago. I'd been doing art for so long that a lot of what was taught wasn't new to me. However, I feel like regardless of me saying "Yeah, yeah I know." I still walked out a better artist for it. Even if you think you've mastered or learned a skill, it's always worth it to practice and listen. One of the big take aways I got from that class was how to shade yellow. I used to try and shade with black when I was a wee babe, and it always leaned toward green. As I got older, I shaded with oranges. The answer was brown. I never would have known without that class. And I learned something new in this video- the ugly color bit. I feel like I was subconsciously doing it, but now I can do it with purpose and I know my art will be better for it

Marc Brunet did a seriously good video on colour theory a few years ago where he goes into the three basic strata's of colour, i.e. hue, value and saturation. A quick guide on how to balance all three in an image whilst talking briefly about how things like saturation can impact what we perceive as cool and warm. Like a desaturated red when balanced with a more saturated red can take on the properties of a cooling balance when the colour itself is traditionally seen as warm etc. Also to do with balancing complimentary colours. Like if you need a compliment to your colour scheme, the less dominant colour should be less saturated, I think the general metric was something like 10% less saturation for every deviation away from your major colours. So if your main colour is 50% ish saturation, your compliments should probably only be about 10% saturated etc.
Really interesting video worth a watch.
