Make sure to watch this one. The Road Glide Special would not start...yes very frustrating, but, I try out a Tech Tip in this video to see if I can get it started. Also, make sure to watch until the end, as I show you a cool little tool kit that is very easy to keep on the bike and includes all the typical Harley size tools to keep you going when out on the road. Thanks for watching. Please consider hitting the SUBSCRIBE button and giving this a thumbs up. Rick

I took the switch off my 2017 Road Glide and took it apart. The important travel in that switch is the first 0.010". The rest doesn't matter. It is a dome tactile switch. If cleaning doesn't help (it didn't help mine), There is a cover over the actual switch that presses it and that cover may have shifted and is keeping the switch from releasing or pressing. My 2017 RG senses switch closed when the clutch is pulled. Looks like yours senses switch open as clutch pulled. In either case, it is that first fraction of an inch that counts. Very easy and cheap to fix.

I ride a 2020 FXST and the same thing started happening with my bike at around 14000 miles. I traced it to the clutch switch by flicking it with my finger a few times. Push it in with your finger and let it flick back out with a click. After I did this, the bike started in gear with the clutch pulled as it should. To make a more positive repair I sprayed Deoxit contact cleaner into the switch and flicked it several times to help clean and lubricate it. Then at the starter I unplugged the solenoid control wire (small), sprayed the connector and terminal with Deoxit and plugged it in and unplugged it several times cleaning it. The bike is operating normally now.

Thanks for the Great Tip on this starting in gear issue. Mine ‘19 RGU recently started this issue and was just sticking and only occasionally working correctly. I sprayed contact cleaner and worked the clutch safety switch with a small screw driver while having the clutch lever pulled in. (Must be a different set up than your is. )
Works every time now like it should if it’s in gear. Again, Much Thanks!

  • @johnpeacock2076

This is a good video. However, there is one more logical step to determine definitively that the switch trick cured the problem. Had you attempted to start the bike with it in gear and the clutch engaged (clutch lever out, relaxed), the starter should not engage. If it does, the switch has failed, but if it doesn’t, the problem has been resolved. Also, disengaging the clutch (pulling the clutch lever) when the engine isn’t running isn’t necessary when shifting into and out of gear. In fact it is detrimental. To prove my point, with your engine off, shift from N to 2nd, then attempt to continue up shifting to 3rd, 4th, 5th, & 6th. You’ll find that it’ll only shift 2-3 times and not go into the next higher gear. But, if you gently rock the bike back and forth, while GENTLY lifting the shift lever, it will quite readily go into any and every gear you select. So, if your bike ever dies in a high gear and you have to pull the clutch lever and coast to the side of the road and subsequently put it in Neutral, so you can push it onto a trailer (or whatever), DO NOT pull the clutch lever in (disengaging the clutch) and begin pressing down on the shift lever repeatedly, and when it stops shifting continuing to depress the shift lever repeatedly with more and more force each time. That will only result in permanent damage to the transmission, such as bent shift forks. Again, simply turn the key to On, without starting the engine, gently and slowly rock the bike back and forth to the extremity while gently depressing the shift lever. It will shift all the way down to 1sr gear, at which time you can bump it up to Neutral. The Green Neutral Lamp will light up. Turn the key to Off, and you’re done. Always work WITH your machine, NOT AGAINST it! It will last longer. Good riding! Stay safe!

Great video Rick! Ironically this started happening to me after I changed the levers and since they are adjustable, I thought that was the issue(clutch doesn’t go far back enough if the setting is too close to the grip). While I think that’s my issue(when I adjust the clutch lever away from grip enough, starts in gear), going to check this out and see if I’m having similar issue. Awesome tip bro 🤙

When I start my 2024 Heritage in first gear with the clutch pulled in it wants to lunge forward so I worked the clutch several times to see if there was something that was hung up I didn't know anything about the clutch safety switch but started in gear with the clutch pulled in will still surge fort a little bit like yours did when it started I know that is acceptable but not lunging 4 ft forward and almost hitting my workbench. Every time I try it in neutral there is no problem.

Been dealing with this for over a year. Bike literally needs to be in neutral to start. I just started making it a habit to start in neutral because of it. I'm thinking a little bit of lube should fix the problem. Thank you.

I believe all touring bikes should start while in gear with the clutch pulled unless the ECM has been programmed differently from the stock configuration. I have had friends that couldn't start their Harley Touring when in gear from the get go and didn't know it was actually a switch pack problem. Thanks for watching and ride safe. 👍✌️👊

@@HDVIBE nope not all , mine is a 2017 roadking flhp police and it WILL NOT start in gear and doesnt have a safety switch either . Now , it has a switch on the kickstand where when you start it and the stand is down when you put it in gear it will kill the engine to let you know its down .

My breakout does it intermittently. Seems like when the bike is in gear and the weight of the bike is on the rear tire I have to put it in natural. It's weird I've read to spray lube on the switch also and cycle the switch like you did. Don't know if I like that idea of spray lube on that switch.

Thanks for your feedback. After only starting the channel 13 months ago and growing to over 2,000 subscribers and hitting over 22,000 views per month, my review of the analytics tells me that the approach is fairly successful in the moto content genre. This approach has also garnered some major moto industry sponsors/supporters to the channel as well. When I see the analytics trending downward and not growing, I will consider making adjustments as necessary to the channel approach. Ride safe and enjoy your ride. 👊👍🇺🇸
