I remember I was in 4th grade and just walked home from school. Nobody was home yet so I turned on the tv and went straight to WGN. At that point, he had 8 strikeouts. I sat in awe of how he was dominating Biggio and Bagwell's Astros. I was a pitcher for my summer league team (Cubs) so I use to try and emulate Kerry Wood's mechanics. I will never forget that day.
Well I’m a yankee fan and have been for some time but I saw the game and it was magical But the thing is in 2016 I went to a natoinals game on June 6 vs the Detroit tigers it was amazing scherzer was dominant
I’m a Atlanta Braves fan in South Carolina and we would get WGN here on channel 13 and watched this game it’s by far the greatest pitching performance in game.
I watched this game on TV as a kid 20 years ago. One of the best games ever and probably one of the most dominant pitching performances ever. It was sheer brilliance that day. I cant believe its been 20 years since that game. Proud to call myself a Cubs fan for life. :-)
Most dominating pitching performance ever and against a great lineup and team that won 102 games that year in 1998. And I'll go ahead and say it, Kevin Orie should've made that play and it would have been an immaculate perfect game.
But if the Orie play would've been called a E-5 the hit would not count. And this could've been almost perfect game and 20k's for Wood. Which sounds a lot better than a 1 hit shutout.
The Cubs were the new Braves with Prior, Wood, and Zambrano. It was the best 1-2-3 punch since Maddux/Glavine/Schmoltz and they were all young. It haunts me to this day what that team could have been if healthy.
I remember being home and turning on this game noy thinking anything different than a normal game. I WAS DEAD WRONG. Always will be 1 of my favorite CUBS
Why didn't they do a video like this with Roger Clemens? He did it twice. But agreed, this is one of the most if not THE most dominating game ever pitched.
The '86 Mariners lost nearly 100 games. The '96 Tigers lost over 100. Clemens gave up three hits and a run against the Mariners and five hits to the Tigers. Wood dominated a very good team and was inches away from a no-no. It's no comparison. More videos is good though.
And it's not like you were ever average, mate. Those injuries were tough but you were always one of the best competitors on the mound. Loved what you brought to the game, mate. Thanks for all of it. Also: it was AN ERROR 😅
Sadly Dusty Baker ruined his career in 2003, what could have happened if he stayed healthy. He could have won a ring in 2016 as a relief or as a starter
The Hardcore Proyect Well not necessarily, even if he did stay healthy maybe he still would have decided to retire prior to 2016? Or maybe Cubs management decided to part ways for salary purposes? We will never know. I do agree with you though on the fact that Dusty Baker overused Kerry Wood and essentially diminished his career.
Had Dusty not used Prior and Wood as much as he did the Cubs don't make the playoffs that year, and keep in mind they were five outs away from the world series. I don't blame Dusty for riding his horses when he needed them, especially with such a weak bullpen. Some players just can't stay healthy. Back in the day pitchers would routinely pitch nine innings on 3 days rest. So as much as I think Dusty made a lot of mistakes I absolutely do not blame him for riding Wood and Prior.
@@williamkoscielniak820 Dusty certainly made mistakes in that game, but Wood's problems were merely a result of his mechanics. And Prior pitched because he wanted to pitch - nobody held a gun to his head.
Wood later said that on the last strike out he felt something in his elbow but ignored it and pitched his next start anyway which likely contributed to his arm trouble that shortened his career. How good could he have been?
I think the problem was that I think we're asking the wrong question. Instead, maybe it's better to ask if Wood could've been so dominant that game, if he pitched in a way that wouldn't end with him injured. Wood was practically violating the laws of physics on some of those pitches, and I think his arm paid the price for it.
That was one baseball was at its best! You have Ken Griffey Junior Randy Johnson Greg Maddux Tom Glavine John Smoltz chipper Jones Roger Clemens the Yankees were great pitching was great but it will be overshadowed by McGwire and Sosa steroids use

I was 23 and had no idea this occurred until about 2 hours ago.
I had it taped … he’s my favorite player ever

Love you Kerry!!!Thanks for the memories!!!!!!

Wasn't it on WGN?
his facial expression at the end is great. a kid who has no real idea of the hugeness of the moment.
Met him today at a baseball clinic awesome guy
I remember watching this on TV thinking damn what a performance for the ages from a fellow Texan. He really seems humble in this interview, too.

Jon .Molina
Wood also hit Biggio, so there were 2 base runners.
Yeah I forgot, Craig leans into anything remotely inside. I always thought they should call a strike if he leans forward.
Kerry said it was a hit. So it's a hit. Stop bitching.
@@jonmolina948 If it's in he strikezone and it hits you, its a strike.
Time really flies, 20 years have passed just like a blink of an eye!
Man...it really does.
I was 10 years old when I saw Kerry Wood did 20 strikeouts, and I will never forget that day!!!!
Amazing. Imagine if third base made that play. Imagine one more strikeout
If they would have properly scored the play at 3rd an error It would be unquestionably the greatest performance of all time
Ain’t a cubs fan but man this game was legendary.
Steve Stone calling Cubs games. The way it should be.
Unreal. What could of been if his arm stayed in one piece. Kerry Wood, Derrick Rose. Shame that there bodies broke down premature.
I am already bored...
DRose is having an MVP caliber year! What a comeback (I know you wrote this before the season started)
That's what happens when you are under dusty baker, he burns you out smh

20 k increíble
I really wish they would’ve won a World Series with kerry
Anybody got the playlist for this interview? The theme was a perfect selection to show how great this game was.

Man those astros uniforms looked spectacular back then.
I wish you guys would upload the entire video that’s on the Cubs Facebook page so I can watch it on my tv
The E-5 sign at the end killed me
my dad was at that game.

Not Dusty's fault! Uneducated comment 👎

Devastating hook with the same arm motion as the fastball.. Got to a point from a hitters point of view where it's not even fair.
JAS
His curveball was a real bowel locker.
Wood should have been tossed from the game for unfair play. Those pitches were completely unhittable.

It looked like a fucking wiffle ball being pitched. And not the one with holes all over the ball, the REAL wiffle ball.
BACK company you unusual
